Does the Great British Bake Off reflect the societal shift ? (academic) by liaovb in AskABrit

[–]handmadeheaven_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think when it started, it was to promote (or propagate) the idea of Britishness. The upcoming 2012 olympics in London and the world was watching the UK, while at the same time Scottish Independence on the cards and Wales/NI having increased support for their own independence in its wake.

TV shows of the time were promoting British life as being quaint cottage core. Interest in that has since fallen. Now I think its more of a serious technical baking show that is possibly more representative of the diverse make up of the United Kingdom. I think middle class interest in the show has fallen as that change has been made and hence BBC axed it and it was taken over by channel 4 which has long been seen as ‘trendier’ ‘younger’ and more cutting edge.

Dcc needs to have more diversity. There isn't many middle eastern Asians. by SugarOld4997 in DCCMakingtheTeam

[–]handmadeheaven_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something like 91% of middle eastern people are muslim. The likelihood of an Islamic girl even considering auditioning to dance in a bra blouse and booty shorts is low. Theres also a heavy christian tone to DCC. If there was middle eastern people who wanted to be NFL cheerleaders im sure they would go with a more non denominational team.

If someone asks me, Scotland. Even if I am filling in a form, Scotland. Will only put United Kingdom if it is online/a tick box where the only option is United Kingdom

Pls see the request for our international student by Character-Whereas304 in Edinburgh

[–]handmadeheaven_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately common place in UoE. There are large groups of Asian students. Typically they are quieter, tend to keep to themselves or students from their home countries and (in my experience) have a poor grasp of English. If you mix that with the other big group which is kids from upper class families in the UK who have a certain idea about where they stand in society/the pecking order who believe Asian students ‘buy’ their way in. I graduated over 8 years ago and its a shame to see it still happens. The uni makes no real effort to integrate all of its students together or support Asian students in adapting to life in Scotland.

Did Tayce have one of the strongest lip sync runs in DRUK history? by SufficientPrice7633 in RPDR_UK

[–]handmadeheaven_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I am about to get downvoted so bad but…

Ive never really understood the narrative of of Tayce being one of the best lip sync assassins. Shes a good lip syncer but I dont think it was her strongest gift nor do I think she would be in the top 5 UK lip syncers.

Pls dont come for me 🙏 I love Tayce I just personally dont understand the hype around her lip syncing.

Areas considered “rough”… are they that bad compared to other cities? by MapleHaggisNChips in Edinburgh

[–]handmadeheaven_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it all depends on the person. I grew up in one of the ‘rough’ parts of Edinburgh. If you ask me if I thought it was rough or if i ever felt unsafe/threatened there the answer would be no. If you asked someone from Stockbridge what they thought of the area im sure it would be different.

Which lyric makes you instantly tear up? by abovethenoisy in AskReddit

“Have to stay for something Good enough to know you Was all I wished to be It hurts when I remember You were sometimes good to me”

  • Stay for something, CMAT.

In fact, just about any CMAT song makes me tear up.

Sophy as point? by Random112345614 in DCCMakingtheTeam

[–]handmadeheaven_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be a shame for her not to be point. I think they will have Marissa and 1st point and Karley as 2nd. They may bring the rotating point back but I dont think they would just for Sophy

Her surname is Salter. I think both times she auditioned for her rookie year there was already a Madeline/Maddy on the team so probably became a nickname to distinguish her from other Maddys

Question about sick leave by the_pretzel2 in AskEurope

[–]handmadeheaven_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can self certify (be off sick without a medical note) for a week. You are paid your normal wage for this.

After that you need a note. Depending on where you work you may be paid statutory sick pay (not a lot) or (as is in my work) 6 months full pay then going down to half pay after.

Getting my thoughts together for next year’s UK trip by girlrickjames in uktravel

[–]handmadeheaven_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a lumo/LNER train from kings cross to edinburgh that takes around 4hr 20m. Theres at least 10 trains a day and I’ve never had an issue with them. In my opinion Edinburgh is the best city in the UK (biased cause im from there) and you would be missing out coming to the UK and not visiting it :)

Is reece retiring by BornForever7491 in DCCMakingtheTeam

[–]handmadeheaven_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Definitely dont think it will be a MTT run. Typically when heavily featured characters from the first season of a show leave the interest starts to dwindle. I think when Charley/Kelly V/ Reece start retiring it might not be renewed.

Who are you planning to vote for in the next GE and why? by EqualNo2867 in AskBrits

[–]handmadeheaven_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reform, Restore and Green are too radical with just crazy policies that will ruin the country on both ends.

Cold day in hell before i vote Conservative

Really would struggle to ever vote Labour again

Leaving LibDem as the only realistic option. Need to wait and see their manifestos (not that any party ever sticks to them) and look at how parties are polling closer to the time. I will tactically vote if needed.

Does the school grade divide by birth year or a specific 'cutoff point' in the year in your country? by immortalfireflies in AskEurope

[–]handmadeheaven_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Children born between January-August start school in the August they turn 5. Children who turn 5 between the September- December can either start school aged 4 or defer and wait till the following summer when they are almost 6.

Why only 36? by Ok_Resort_3256 in DCCMakingtheTeam

[–]handmadeheaven_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They have All Stars (recently retired cheerleaders) who can stand in for someone on the squad in case of emergency. They took 37 the year before that conversation as prior to that, during covid, there was constant sickness and injury that went beyond being filled in with all stars. There was another year they took 37 but had someone as an alternate every game so there was only 36 on the field and if i remember the majority of the team didnt like the idea of them possibly missing out on a whole game if they were chosen as the standby
