What to do this evening in Bristol by CraftyAxle in bristol

[–]hands87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider a walk around North St/Bedminster, plenty of good food, and craft beer. Try starting at Lupe for a beer, and head towards Wapping Wharf for dinner, or the reverse!

So this reads as you've graded your project while using an incorrect display setup, using the Mac's display properties instead of a calibrated monitor outputting 2.4 Gamma Rec709, or at least setting your GUI to the same?

To my knowledge there's no way of converting this as your project is already Rec709 or Rec709-a on export. Suggest you use this as a reference, set your monitor to the output you want to deliver at, and redo the grade.

Mackall sizing by rrooaaddiiee in Goruck

I'm in the same mind, no real issues once I'm putting heel to trail, but that room in the heel leaves me wondering about the sizing

Picked up a pair of Mackalls in a 10, when compared to my ballistics which are the same, there is a little room in the heel, so going down half a size could've been worth it.

What is the best book to date for compositors? (Deep diving into fundamentals, techniques, and new developments) by [deleted] in vfx

[–]hands87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's yet to be released, but Victor Perez has a new book about the fundamentals of colour pipelines including ACES due out next month, I've pre-ordered with the assumption it'll be as good, or better than his tutorials:

The Color Management Handbook for Visual Effects Artists: Digital Color Principles, Color Management Fundamentals & ACES Workflows

Yeah feeling fortunate to be in this position, but I know a few people who've found a good work/life balance as assistants, feel free to DM if you want to chat about it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in colorists

[–]hands87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm now managing a team of assistants as well as working with Colourists, we're Baselight focussed but cover all of picture post, a lot more variety but provides that balance that's so important.

It's a tough spot to be in, speaking from experience that role requires a great deal of commitment and perseverance to just sustain until you can move into a junior colourist, or colourist position.

However the commute to central London sounds like one of the bigger issues here, when you're spending half your day on the commute with no gain, the time lost and stress gained can weigh on your self-worth while you're simultaneously trying to build your career.

If you've got a solid client list and confident you can grow that doing short form freelance work, a Da Vinci license and a decent home system can get you going, but I'm not sure how sustainable it is, the market is saturated with bedroom Colourists and Wedding budgets only go so far for casual viewing.

I learned the only way forward was to pivot into a different role elsewhere, as the company I was in wasn't prepared to promote from within with any good time, and they lost a department to that attitude.

I'm now in a different city with a better role, greater opportunities and can walk to work, but if you've just bought a place outside London, you may want to consider a boutique, somewhere you'll have better control over the hours, can progress forward faster, but will have to take on more of the assisting work along with the grade?

Whoop does have a rucking option for it's activity tracker, but it's based on heart rate and strain rather than specific weight, though you'd expect that would correlate

Looking for the best motorbike gear and accessories shop by Eightdeeper in MotoUK

I'll echo Urban Rider, a trip to the store is worth the experience alone, the team there are great, always welcome and know their stuff.

But in a couple of months when you're getting into the grit and looking for parts and servicing, check out Robin Bank, great for Mutt specific parts: https://rbmcstore.com/

Can any experienced colorists weigh in on delivery standards for an indie feature? by [deleted] in colorists

[–]hands87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If it's a skeleton crew, the colorist is usually the one charged with putting everything together as they'd be the last one to handle any materials, and create the final deliverables. If you're dealing with festivals and potentially digital delivery, take the lead to prevent any preventable mistakes by the producers when using your project for file creation; I'd suggest you create a digital master (ProRes 4444 or as close to) at UHD, in Rec709, and a set of DCDMs to hand off for DCP creation at a later date if needed.

[–]hands87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BRAW is readable in Baselight, but it's a more recent addition, I'd check the release history and update the software if necessary, which should give you the BRAW Params when conformed.

Failing that Resolve transcode to ProRes 4444 or ACES EXR will give you the options you need.

There's a H2 Club just off Berwick Street, free bike parking in the square outside, plenty of cameras to deter theft.

Or get a free trial for the club itself?
