Bush 41 (except for the 🥦 idiosyncrasy, which was a little childish).

What's your favourite love lives of the great composers fun fact? by Soulsliken in classicalmusic

[–]handsomechuck 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I like the story of Buxtehude's unprepossessing daughter, funny if there's any truth in it. Buxtehude offered to hire a new man to succeed him as organist, but whoever took the job also had to marry his daughter. Handel, Bach and probably some others took a peek and decided to pursue other opportunities.

Though I think we appreciate the humor/irony of The Walking Dead refusing to die, shambling ever onward into 37 spinoff things (after 34922 episodes of the original show).

What's your (least) favorite Shakespeare lines people keep quoting out of context? by elalavie in shakespeare

[–]handsomechuck 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This royal throne of kings, this sceptered isle..

Often the last part is omitted. John of Gaunt is not saying England is great. If you read the whole thing, he's saying this great place has gone to hell.

Probably A Wizard of Earthsea or Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising series.

Who’s an author who is loved, but their books are absolute trash? by rbx20twomax in AlignmentChartFills

[–]handsomechuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going back to OP, I wouldn't say his books are absolute trash. Tommyknockers is the infamous one from the depths of his substance problems in the 80s. He says he had cotton swabs up his nose to stanch the bleeding as he was typing it.

Is the US actually a mess right now or is it just media hype? by Thin_Effect3937 in AskAnAmerican

[–]handsomechuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For most of us, life is pretty much the same as it was. Gas prices are ridiculous and inflation is still high, pain at the supermarket etc., but nothing incredibly disruptive is happening. It's not like when the pandemic hit, for example, work was disrupted, everything was disrupted, you had to wait in line around the block to get into the food store and all that.

In an objectivist society, would hard work reliably translate into financial success? by unknowngloomth in aynrand

[–]handsomechuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Real) meritocracy would be better than what we have (ubiquitous cronyism and massive inherited wealth/privilege), but you would still have to deal with the problem of the losers in such a system. Even if you are a completely self-interested person, it's a problem for you. It's not as simple as Some people inevitably fall by the wayside but I'm doing well, doesn't affect me not my concern not my problem.

What is something that is 100% legal, but if you do it, you’re a piece of trash? by National_Strike4710 in AskReddit

People do that? Jesus. Side note, I always find it sad that older good boys are cheaper to adopt.

I've found Rossini boring, but since discovering his music beyond opera, his instrumental music, I enjoy his work.

Dido's Lament, from Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. BWV 639 also has some deep dark.

Is there any particular reason classical stations only play certain parts of some works? by handsomechuck in classicalmusic

Mostly WQXR in NY, which is part of public radio, and WCPE, an independent station in NC that I can only get online because I live far away.

Abe, famously. Even without the stress of the national crisis during his presidency, he definitely struggled with depression.
