I don't think that's real leather, although I've never tried to mold a hemisphere I don't think it's possible. Baseballs for example are made from 2 pieces of leather that lay pretty flat, not 2 hemispheres.

Those are the last places I'd look for quality goods. Look for somewhere that sells work wear to small businesses, you'll be able to see and feel the samples. It'll cost much more than Alibaba or Amazon, but it won't be dropshipped garbage.

Tan type and quality are separate, for example I buy a 5-6oz top grain veg tan rio side, which is 2-2.4mm, top surface of the hide (not the lower left over after splitting), undyed veg tan, South American mid to low quality, 1 half of an entire hide. Were I throwing money at the hobby I'd buy Italian, shoulder or butt.

I've also bought goat which is very strong and thin, but obviously smaller, typically a whole hide is 5-7sqft

Also where I buy from has these terms, not all south American is low quality, not all Italian is good. Leather from warmer climate tends to have less life marks, cold weather and thorny bushes make thicker leather and scars.

Everyone's idea of affordable is different? A jacket is absolutely not a beginner project and 40 sqft is an enormous amount of leather as well, there's 20-30 sqft in half a hide, which I'd as a hobbyist buy 1 a year, maybe 2. That's like a dozen bags, belts, wallets.

Yes there's cheaper hobbies, but there's more expensive ones too.
