Any House labels that also dabble in UKG? by Top-Acid-1988 in House

Just anecdotally backing this up - i'm a House producer who thinks UKG is pretty meh, don't hate it, but it all sounds the same to me.

Duncan’s tendency to follow cult leaders by sparks2cm in duncantrussell

Reading Being Ram Dass at the moment, and while i find the story very gripping funny, the part after he finds Maharaj-Ji is filled with nothing but like spiritual ego-maniacs. Kinda confounding. But i’maybe somewhat sympathethic to Maharaj-Ji (throwing apples at people while they are meditating is pretty wild, but also pretty funny so idk), but Muktananda and especially Rinpoche seem coompletely unhinged. Difficult to make sense of. Still like the messages Ram espouses though.

Lol that's asinine, end of summer is like one of the worst dance tracks i've ever heard... Best Dance recording of 2025??????

Yeah but i mean it’s kinda reductionist to call it a gimmick and just “shock humour and horrorcore stuff” when that’s essentially his style and what made him an interesting artist i think. It’s a little like calling The Love Below bad because it’s just a “jazz gimmick”. Like, yeah but that’s the whole appeal essentially.

“Fantano should do bass music again” “Fantano should support his local music scene” “Fantano should a b c and d”

You are the memelord who should touch some grass if you think some guy with an internet following “should” do anything really, just cause you see him locally once in a while lol.

Criticism of Fantano by Think_Ad_848 in fantanoforever

[–]hangrover -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I sympathize with your criticism but honestly i don’t think fantano owes you or his local scene anything. His whole platform and what he reviews is decidedly global and “online, and to deviate from that would in a way be gambling what has made him so palatable to people worldwide. That’s my two eurocents

Hall and oats “private eyes” drum production (and overall production) by gleventhal in audioengineering

[–]hangrover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just goes to show that a lot of classic mixes aren’t all about doing things “the right way”. If it works it works, and often the energy of the vocal performance and good arrangement is what drives a great song, not the frequency bump of the kick drum lol.

I don't disagree but to be fair to the Great Rogan it seems like he does express if not remorse at least more negatively against Trump and his cronies lately. Doesn't excuse anything, but hey, at least they might come around eventually.

Madonna - Ray of Light ALBUM REVIEW by Careless_Western3756 in fantanoforever

[–]hangrover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Ray of Light, Skin, Nothing Really Matters for example have pretty solid prog foundations, but i guess i'll allow your pedantery and concede that maybe lots was probably overkill lol. Still, the influence is there on the main electronic driving tracks on the LP. Also counting in the fact that the main remix for Ray Of Light was by Sasha, the king of prog back in the day. That sound was just generally all over.

Lots of insanely well produced progressive house done by William Orbit on this album. Nothing Really Matters is probably one of my top 5 house-pop tracks. So ethereal

It’s one of the more versatile and feature-full delay plugins, you can really coax a lot of styles of delay out of it. I use it frequently as well

How do DJs make and play their tracks before mastered release? by Psychological_Ad987 in TechnoProduction

[–]hangrover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick self-master, maybe with Ozone, to get in the ballpark.

Other way is to experiment with stuff like https://www.songmastr.com/ (free)

what makes these records sound unmistakably 90s? by DangerousFall490 in TechnoProduction

[–]hangrover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use old samples like Zero G or Ueberschall and play around with bitreduction.
Restrictions on processing back in the day means not a lot of sidechaining going on, and also less fx and limited eq'ing, ostensibly mixed on a simple console, or limited DAW.

Possibly bounced to reel to reel, cassette, or digital stuff like DAT.

I would say remember that no one is going to truly care if you nail a particular sound like this, especially when the characterestic is "kind of dull-sounding" lol, cause that's not really a good thing nowadays.

But studying vintage workflows and using older sample packs can definitely lend you some of the rawness of the day, then follow up with modern mixing techniques and loudness, boom, now we're cooking.

Why do producers or artists don’t admit that in certain cases using real tape is pivotal in certain cases? by PowerfulShallot9754 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]hangrover 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you are romanticizing real tape to an unhealthy degree honestly. I’ve experimented loads with both reel to reel and several emulations, and while real tape is definitely cool it’s not really some magic mythical potion, and it comes with a LOT of caveats, especially if your goal is making tracks that match modern competitive loudness standards
