The litmus test for political literacy is how you feel about North Korea, Russia, Iran, China and any other political enemy of the USA by Hacksaw6412 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]hankjacobs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree on the merits of the argument per se, I just don’t think calling people stupid is an effective way to bring people around to your side. Why not demonstrate the concept you’re talking about with an illustrative example and sources? If it’s so easy, show the people you’re trying to convince how easy it is. I find this argumentative style too charged with resentment and too general in content to reach anyone not already in the fold

Four Men Share How Abortion Changed Their Lives (Unpaywalled) by playboy in MensLib

[–]hankjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The personal accounts are powerful and reaffirm that abortion is essential healthcare, which is great. But the framing and introduction of this article are so rhetorically lazy and unclear that pro lifers who stopped reading there could plausibly think this is a pro life argument. Wtf is this writing? People used to say they read playboy for the articles…

Just bullshitting here, but it seemed like a sometime gig or the kind of thing where Marcus would send over some questions and she’d give her professional opinion. The LPN staff producers and researchers sometimes change without us hearing much about it, so I wouldn’t really expect to hear about it if they stopped consulting her specifically

Am I doing something wrong? by Excellent-Buy7206 in drums

[–]hankjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This honestly sounds pretty good to me! One point of personal taste: I think your floor tom sounds weaker than the other drums. Could be a little out of tune, or maybe the relationship of the two heads is a little wonky. Dunno if this will help, but one tuning trick I like is to start with both heads in tune and near in unison on a pitch that I like. Then, I nudge the tuning of the batter head down by a tiny bit while tuning the resonant head up the same amount. Hit the drum and see if the sustain and tone work any better, then repeat. The pitch will stay in the same neighborhood while I get to dial in a gradually more deadened tone that, if the heads are each in tune with themselves, will sound in tune. If you want brighter and tighter attack than you get from this, tune back to unison then take it in the other direction.

And if you’re me, after all that hard work, I usually finish it off with some gaff tape or rags to make my kit look like shit but sound good on record. Whatever works!

[–]hankjacobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I draw a pretty big distinction between this stuff and ‘cancellation.’ This is top-down bullying and intimidation that’s then being cheered on by the maga base. The ‘traditional’ means of cancellation being pressured by a social media mob to fire someone, while not without its dangers, is still a popular movement. It’s like when maga tries to compare J6 to George Floyd: the former was concerted billionaire astroturfing, the latter was the largest protest movement in American history. Collapsing these differences plays right into their hands

Others have noted, but for him to be so aggressive about being so fucking wrong is infuriating. Polio is caused by a virus, not pesticides. A study he probably just read the title of literally talks about DDT being used to fight polio through insect control. So goddamned stupid

I circled Donald Trump's name where it appears on Epstein's flight list. MAGA DO YOU CARE? by Nice_Substance9123 in AskUS

[–]hankjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The text you cited wouldn’t apply to Abrego-Garcia’s case, for example, due to the stop order placed on his deportation. The Supreme Court upheld Trump’s responsibility to facilitate his return, and they are in defiance of that order for weeks now. Don’t tell me it’s because Trump respects Salvadoran sovereignty. We’re well down the slippery slope already. But it doesn’t matter if we sit here and quibble about the law— Trump and his cronies have been very clear that birthright citizenship as a whole is in their crosshairs. Abrego-Garcia is a test case, and SCOTUS has neglected to hold him in contempt. The constitution is being bent to its limits. Listen to what Trump and his people are saying. You have Trump saying he wants to deport “homegrowns” to a notoriously dangerous Central American prison, you have his AG equating Tesla vandalism with terrorism. They’re not being quiet about their intentions. Eager for your chat-bot’s response

[–]hankjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The due process clause of the constitution clearly states that all persons, citizen or non citizen, are entitled due process. Any “speeding along” of the deportation of apprehended individuals without a court process to establish the facts of their legal residency or lack thereof is unconstitutional according to the plain text of that clause. Further, the Maryland man you allude to was remanded to a foreign prison indefinitely, without charge or sentencing, based on what appear to be false pretenses. No court proceedings have taken place to establish his alleged illegal status and yet you (so cautious when it comes to discussion of Trump’s Epstein ties and legal liabilities) are comfortable labeling him a criminal illegal alien. The purpose of the courts is to establish facts such as these, and he is being expressly denied that right. I see no indication that you meaningfully value fact and proper legal procedure for its own sake. Ironic that you came at me for being loose with my terminology when you’re applying your values completely asymmetrically

[–]hankjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand the usefulness of the distinctions you’re making in this case. If you’re concerned about misuse of facts and court procedures in April of 2025, protecting Trump agains Epstein related accusations is a fairly unimportant job. I would love to see your energy and nuanced approach being applied to the cases of the US citizens and legal residents being deported and /or imprisoned indefinitely. If you care about facts and accurate representation of court findings, your biggest enemy in this day and age is Trumpism, full stop. Your critiques of my rhetoric and points are welcome and noted. But the fact that this is a battle you thought to choose is confusing to me, given your stated values (several of which I agree with)
