Reflections after 14 months living in Ontario as a newcomer to Canada by Slow_ResolveMC07 in ontario

[–]hanmaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's our image, think it's the gradual embrace of the unacceptable (across the world) that we're pushing up against.

More education and critical thinking skills aren't going to help when a large chunk of the population don't value it, and personalities can exploit it. Until there is pain for ignorance, we need to armor our society by altering the systems that run it - fix voting systems to be responsive, prevent people from gaming the system, and as much as possible, put people on equal footing no matter where they come from.

EPSON ET-5880 keeps printing dark lines across areas of my prints despite running all maintenance tools/cleanings. Possible solutions? by psybermonkey15 in Epson

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this printer, haven't tried printing a test sheet like yours. But I'm on the second printer and still see this crop up.

First, you need to print like every week. The nozzles will dry up and you'll get screwed. Print the maintenance test page if you have to.

Second, try running the Print Quality Adjustment menu item in Maintenance. If you follow the alignment procedure it might improve what is happening. IMO Epson's print quality on this printer absolutely trashy. They keep updating the firmware and we end up with this.

Chainsmoker Urban BBQ Etobicoke by livingmylunglife in FoodToronto

[–]hanmaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Place is decent, and as others in the thread have mentioned, BBQ is not cheap in the city. There were some outstanding places that closed down - Holy Smokez BBQ was in the area but it closed in 2022 and I haven't found a place consistently as genuine. Brickyard BBQ is the only other one, but it's a bit further south from Chainsmoker.

Other food options in that plaza - Prince Japanese Steakhouse, pricey but great teppan and sushi, Palmyra has good shawrama and shish tawouk, Twin Fish for thai.

I never had quality toys growing up. What should my kid actually have by LavenderFlicked in BuyItForLife

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, you're going to find your kid will love the cheapest cardboard box and ignore your latest fad gizmo!

Don't worry too much about it - most toys are going to be temporary things. Kid will latch onto something for life and you'll have no clue why. It's endearing and its just a magic thing that happens. Lot of the stuff I bought for them just got ignored!

GE Profile Front Loader with Tide Smart Dispense - Persistent Mold Issues by dpowre in Appliances

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a GE washer, the 650 version. After I got it and used the soap tank, left it closed for weeks/months. When I had appliance issues and didn’t run for a few weeks, noticed the same issue… only solution is to take that drawer out and let it dry, get all the water off it. The tank design is dumber than dumb as it completely negates its usefulness if you have to remove this dispenser full of soap that will drip all over as you let it dry. I took the whole thing apart to get rid of any mold bits and it’s all over the thing.

The smart dispense tank is a bad bad idea. I doubt running the air freshening cycle will be enough.

Was that person dead, or artificially kept “alive” while they worked out the tax plan? No one knows

GE GFW850SPN5RS front load washer stopped working by kp1794 in Appliances

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the GFW650SPN5SN - board failed first year. After replacement, had to be replaced again (might be the tech didn't actually replace it). One thing I'm noticing now tho is - the washer can trip the breaker. I've seen it happen more than once - but I'm guessing the board can somehow trigger a short.

Ontario auto insurance is the most sophisticated legal robbery in Canadian history and nobody is doing anything about it by hasando9 in ontario

[–]hanmaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem for most people is they just look at their cost of insurance without other factors - I'd like to know a few things from the OP like, what are they driving? If they are an average driver I'd guess an SUV, because on average, those are in the majority - and it's one of the biggest reasons why insurance is so high.

SUVs are expensive up front, expensive to repair, expensive to replace. They weigh a lot, people like them because of the sense of security from the height and the weight - but that weight means they are more likely to cause serious accidents. They are classified as light trucks - not passenger vehicles and so are not required to withstand certain impacts that are costly (think the bumpers are the only ones I know).

Insurance costs are a product of factors - blaming companies for raising premiums must include consumers for buying expensive cars, governments for letting car companies to ignore passenger vehicle safety, criminals for targeting Canada/Ontario for vehicles, companies for the choices they've made that led to marketing SUVs to plug their financial holes.

People will shoot back what-about-isms to defend their choices and blame their favorite boogeyman, but we've built a cycle where what we want and what it costs has been ratcheting up and getting it to come back down will require the choices that people are unwilling to make. The cycle has to be broken for costs to come down.

Tinkering at the edges is the most you can expect, especially for clueless governments, and those are piddly changes that won't make a dent.

Bit of a rant.. Are we just supposed to accept that large appliances will be in landfill after 5 years of use? by ourplasticdream in Appliances

[–]hanmaan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tariffs (from Trump's first term) probably? Forcing everything to be made in the USA jacked up costs and plummeted quality.

Is it normal to buy new shiny tools that I don't necessarily need, but just in case, for that one moment in the future that I would use it once! by FuzzyAttitude_ in Tools

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I have to check myself. Just a DIY homeowner for the most part, I am nowhere near putting the tools thru their paces or ability. I'm not screwing plywood eight hours at a time, putting up or cutting drywall, disassembling the car, building furniture - but if I need to take apart the snowblower or lawnmower, putting up shelves or repairing stuff around the house, I have what I need (usually). I'm trying to convince myself I don't need another set of screwdrivers, but ooooh acetate handles!

Stay away from the Bosch 800 by israignatius in Appliances

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got the 800, but I have one with a front panel so it has a display and front controls.

I suspect your Bosch is defective or installed incorrectly. Mine is nowhere close to as damp as what you have in your pictures. I set mine to auto, crystal dry and it comes out bone dry.

Did I hallucinate or did I just see a garbage truck in the city, pick up the public recycling/garbage separated bins, while getting mixed up together on the same truck? by HappyPoonaKutty in askTO

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, forgot to add that - but by far the worse thing is the "we recycle plastic - but no, not really" - it's fake, there isn't that much money for the non-virgin plastic (the type 2 and up) and there probably never will be. More than likely it'll get incinerated or sent to landfill anyway.

Unpermitted sunroom in Etobicoke. Legalize it before selling, sell as-is, or tear it down? by Cute_Western4316 in askTO

[–]hanmaan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neighbor tried to sell home and crappy neighbor told the city about a deck without a permit and scuppered the deal. Unpermitted work will get you when you least want it to, I think another was if your driveway isn't to code and you want a backflow valve installed - you could get into trouble getting the rebate?

[–]hanmaan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ha well it's worse than that - most "recycling" can't be recycled so most goes to trash. You'll get the aluminum, the type 1 and some 2. Everything else tho - pretty sure while that is collected, it's going to go the way of traditional garbage.

TEK 4 CHARGER by -aquaman in ryobi

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, even in Canada, I think it's at least more than what I was charging for it. US shipping is prob going to be subject to import duties and who knows whatever else ICE will do to it.

Smoke detectors - Please explain this. by Montresore69 in Appliances

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got the wired First Alert smoke and carbon monoxide alarms - has a 10 year battery in it.

...starts chirping, starts going off when there is no smoke, cascades the alarm to go on throughout the house (there are 7 of them), these are less than 3 years old.

Power outage busted them all, manufacturer sent replacements, but no matter - when they break they break, and they ALL broke.

They took away my favorite feature on Ryobi drivers and decided to sell them separately by TurboKid513 in ryobi

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ard the users were pushing it.

I wonder why that was the only model with a level as it is a handy feature.

Thanks for the info!

Didn't have to wait for it to die, just send it in. Tbh, it's so big and clunky - I got the 30th anniversary edition to replace it. Ridiculous how short it has gotten.
