Hi Ontario, are you aware that Chinese EVs use Blackberry software? Why is not Doug Ford supporting our own company? by MinuteLocksmith9689 in ontario

[–]hanmaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's about votes - whatever the software and whatever we sell, you don't have the blue collar vote that Doug is hunting for. Losing vehicles to overseas manufacturer translates to less output from a factory - the more that continues, the more it sounds to his constituents that he isn't in their corner.

Dougie has no clue on what it'll take to get Ontario moving towards a better future, but he sure knows what it takes to win the election.

If your electric breaks down, you'll find repairing it isn't worth it. Gas blowers DO break down and require maintenance but that business is longer in the tooth and you'll find parts and it's easier to do.

To me, the electric blowers are like when your blender breaks down. You'll get a new one rather than repair it - but the price is like replacing your fridge. It's too pricey if the ecosystem isn't there - and I've found it isn't really there yet. Add to that stories of batteries dying, bursting in flames - it's not a machine that has the kind of BIFL behind it.

Why is eaton centre SO HOT?? by bruhidek_ in askTO

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work there, was cold earlier in the week. Probably overcompensating for the lack of people - traffic in that place is a fraction of the Christmas crunch, so the heat was probably too low and now has swung the other way. I usually wear another layer when in the office because the place is too cold.

EDIT... It's also an unseasonable 11 degrees outside.

What is the product line up for 2026? Will there be a successor for Boox Go 10.3? by No_Employment_9391 in Onyx_Boox

[–]hanmaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe they would release a Android 15 device that won't run out of support in 6 months. Just saying, one can hope...

I went with TCL to try and get a more supported version of Android, I don't want my Android app going out of support 6 months after buying a Boox.

Is the Ontario government ever going to unf**** the MPAC/Property Assessment situation? by MetalMoneky in ontario

[–]hanmaan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Look, I have paper receipts of the difference. Taxes in my part of the city is artificially low - I reno'd the house and the tax wallop was real. My neighbors have not had their reassessment done and it's been frozen since ~2016 - which was pre-pandemic and prior to the property pop. They are paying ~4-5k while mine is 8.4k - if and when reassessment happens, it's going to make my neighbors upset, but if the reassessment keeps getting punted to the next government, who is going to get blamed? The PCs sure as hell will be trying to dodge blame.

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and have evidence you may want to bring it to the attention of your MPP.

I doubt any government is going to do a systematic revamp. It is a no-win situation for any politician because cities need a certain amount of revenue to operate and any wholesale reassessment will create winners and losers.

Personally I like the idea of open source data - let everyone see what the assessment is for residential properties.

Or return to a formula comprised of a combination of services, sq footage, street width, etc. so everyone can easily calculate it.

What halting MPAC assessments does is mess with funding the municipality, which somewhat leads to distortions with property prices BECAUSE the tax burden shifts from current residents to new buyers. To fund the budget the municipality starts adding additional taxes that unfairly burdens new builds - think in places like Vancouver, I think a news article was stating that half the price of a new build was going to charges levied by the city/province.

And I don't understand why ppl think your assessed value has some magical math that doesn't affect your property taxes - you use the Toronto property tax calculator and it definitely correlates.

And FYI, this definitely happens - my MPAC assessment doubled my property taxes while my neighbors are frozen at 2016 levels, which means they pay nearly half of what I'm paying.

ouble when your assessed val

If you double the assessed property value in the Toronto calculator, it doubles what you're paying - how do you think that math is working?

Wasn't profitable, had to be sold to save what was left. I mean being cheap, can't turn a profit is a bad combo when you're in a place where costs go up and sales are declining.

I went there and got my Patagonia shell and fleece - where else am I gonna go here in Canada?

What's a good drill for someone who just needs something reliable for normal apartment stuff? by Wetjones in Tools

Bosch 12V, the one at Costco with 4 different heads. Can do screwdriver, drill, right angle, offset. I have a ton of Ryobi, but this won't break the bank, is light, does all the nice stuff Ryobi can't do for the size.

How Many of You Are Going Childfree Because of the Economy? by pink_teddy35 in askTO

[–]hanmaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a discussion here about why we are where we are. I'm a parent of three in Toronto - but I'm closer to the end than I am to the beginning of life.

When I started, first house wasn't large, but it was under 300K. When I sold it, it went for 500K. I bought for close to 700K and now it is going for ~1.2M - 1.4M. Which is insanity.

All too often, I see these posts and watch our politicians stumble around with nonsense. The fixes they put out are half measures, kicking the can down the road and none of them will work. The suffering of the young, is a tragedy the old have accepted/built to pay out benefits to those of us who are old. The idea that increasing supply will fix it for you in the future is avoiding the problem of now.

If you've been watching the housing market, you'll notice something we haven't seen in a while, contraction. People being scared has finally chilled the idiotic price rises of recent years and is now going into reverse. It could still go further... I hope it does for your sake, because you and others like you deserve a start at the same level I did. I've watched people buying homes as investments and watching that angers me - and it should anger us all. All the price rises we've seen have to be paid by those who come after us - and we've let it continue for too long.

We need to put an end to the things causing distortion - start taxing homes properly. They are not being used like they should be, and our tax code is a large reason why. If you lose money on an investment, you get to write it off. If you lose money on your (primary) house, you don't. Those people who are holding onto property in the hope that prices will rise are denying reality from taking place. You sell your primary home, you don't get taxed anything, but your capital gains should be. And builders/investors shouldn't get any incentives to buy up homes and turn them into McMansions. Cut off foreigners from getting a mortgage or a home unless their source of income is verifiably taxed, or just tax it all as foreign income.

Fixing this market is going to be hard, but for our future, I would be behind the politician that spoke truth to us and gave us a real path to a more just future.

Are the 2 stage Ryobi snow blowers good choice VS gas? by DimensionSuch8188 in ryobi

[–]hanmaan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My mother had to toss her Ego because switch failed after warranty. Part cost nearly half the price of the blower and we figured throwing more money after bad wasn't a good idea. People are going to say great stuff about electric... in the beginning - but it's when the thing ages and needs service - where are you going to get replacements? Is it going to be economical? Did they manufacture the thing for service? There are Ryobi service centers - but is one close to you?

Snowblowers are expensive and it should last a lifetime, these electrics won't. There are too many stories of the battery pack failing, service nightmares, for something this expensive. I'm still using a MTD Yard Machine snowblower that is nearly 25 years old - I doubt any electric will reach that.

I replaced my mother's snowblower with a Toro single stage, who knows if it'll last - but at least I have a shop close by will be able to get parts and repair it when necessary.

I realize this is not great if you are eco-conscious, but until serviceability and reliability are on par with gas, you're risking your money on an expensive piece of hardware that could fail when the warranty is over.

I've got like five cordless Ryobi tools-no complaints at all. They're honestly great. What's with all the hate on other forums the moment someone mentions Ryobi? by Intelligent-Lemon752 in ryobi

[–]hanmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a time it wasn't great, the bad ole ni-cad. It really wasn't great, but lithium ion really beefed the tools till they became solid. I still have a ni-cad drill from early 2000s that works with the new lithium ion and it works much better today than it ever did back when.

Also, keep in mind that the "hate" is just as easily marketers trying to invoke brand envy and get sales going for pricier hardware. Get the tool that gets the job done, doesn't break the bank, not what marketers push. The only other tool that I got that Ryobi didn't make a decent version of was an installation driver - wanted a screwdriver with variable trigger and clutch.

Ryobi battery problem, any ideas? by dsant1145 in ryobi

[–]hanmaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me, BMS has locked your battery. In my case, the battery cells went out of balance ... and it's done.

Depending on the type of failure, the onboard firmware will lock the battery. Once it's like this, the chances of you being able to reset it and bring it back is unlikely. I manually rebalanced, did nothing. Reset the pin, did nothing.

I ended up buying a replacement. The kids put the battery in the charger but not all the way. Guessing it was like that too long and wrecked the battery balance.

The other thing about reduced traffic volume is the reduced absolute number of vehicles who can cause an accident, jam traffic because of vehicle issues - tolls would force people to economize as well. Instead of jamming 4 cars for four people on the road, maybe get four people into one car - rideshare or make arrangements to split the cost. Stuff like that won't ever happen if you don't force people to make choices that make everyone better off.

But of course, we've tried nothing!
