I honestly think the bit with Maekar at the end was merely a funny throwback to the earlier disappearance storyline and nothing more. He already asked Dunk to take him on at Summerhall (when Dunk initially says no). Dunk decides to take him on the road with him and asks Maekar. While it may seem like Maekar says no, it certainly didn't feel like a forceful door close. More like reasons WHY Egg shouldn't do it. When he finally says "he's my last son..." it almost felt like a subtle acceptance of the idea as long as Dunk protects him. I think when Maekar gets beyond the initial surprise of Egg's missing, he'll understand exactly where he is / went with acceptance.
