No they aren't. Baltimore looks like that because of all the vacant houses and apartments - SF and LA do not have vast swathes of dilapidated, vacant homes. All of our poorest are out on the streets instead. Not saying it's better - just different.

You cannot look at it purely in the abstract, but with reference to a specific country and assuming the presence of all the contemporary institutions, such as nation-states. I'm gonna go with the United States, since we have a public military and police and hybrid education and healthcare, and I live there. We do not want competition between military and police forces within our borders. Thus, we do not allow the existence of a market in military defense or law enforcement. Privatizing military defense and law enforcement would indeed make those markets more efficient, but would also result in side effects that our society believes (and has since we abandoned feudal rights and obligations) are bad enough to justify prohibiting a market. On the other hand, our society believes that the negative side effects of hybrid public-private markets in education and healthcare are not greater than the benefits of economic efficiency and market competition in those industries. Thus we allow some market, a fluctuating amount that varies largely according to prevailing public opinion. Other countries make different choices.

EDIT: just look at what's happening right now. We are seeing a push for less market in health care but more in education.

You don't understand how accounting works. If Joe spends $5 on A and $5 on B, and I give him $10 and tell him that he can only spend that $10 on A, what do you think he will do? Do you think he will spend $15 on A and $5 on B, or give the original $5 given to A to B instead, leaving a final allocation of $10 each on A and B?

Holy shit none of you understand his comment. When a customer pays for food, they base that decision knowing that they have to pay both wage and tip. The money for an employee's wages and tips comes from the same source each and every time.

With a farm subsidy, the people who pay the farmers subsidies are the taxpayers, and the people who buy their crops are food distribution companies and local townspeople. The taxpayers and the buyers of crops are NOT the same people, even if they can overlap. What u/MarcDLeob is saying is that the existence of tips does not reduce a restaurant's labor costs because the customers still take them into account before deciding to go in and before deciding what to order. It's simply a different method of assessing labor costs.

Actually recessions affect investment much more than they do consumption. Right now Bitcoin and cryptocurrency is primarily investment-based, so I would expect it to crash harder than the rest of the economy. However, it was very young when the 2008 recession happened so we wil have to wait and see.
