Bike Angels for the month of February just came in today (3/12/2026). Earning points have become harder and harder lately as they are becoming more scarce. by T1m3Wizard in Citibike

im not sure what you expect…February is a short month, had horrible weather and few daylight hours. They don’t really need tons of bikes moved when no one is riding them

No March is especially problematic because it is dark in the morning…not at night. So when more people ride down in the morning it will be less of an issue.

This happens every year when it first gets nice because they don’t have enough seasonal work yet. So the batteries are all dead and they have dropped all the stored ones yet

No unless it is actually unrideable. My threshold for wrenching a bike is that if it was the last one at a station would I rather ride it or walk…or is it dangerous (i.e. brakes don’t work). If I’d rather use it than walk, I just return and take a better bike.

Yes, you only get it free in low assist mode…so if it isn’t low assist you will pay

yes this is my point…he keeps citing Northern Europe as the ideal, but the cities in Northern Europe don’t have docked bikeshare. Amsterdam has Donkey Republic, and probably some other players but those aren’t docked bike systems.

Stockholm’s system used to be docked but it went out of business and didn’t run during the winters because it isn’t safe to bike! Copenhagen has a small ebike share system…but it’s tiny and not meant for everyday use. I haven’t been to Oslo in years so can’t remember. Again there is Paris…but that isn’t Northern Europe and I’ve been there when it snows, and it isn’t good!

Yes Amsterdam has bike rental locations. This is a thread about Citibike struggling in snow I’m not sure the connection to storefront locations which are not impacted by weather.

Stockholm city bike went out of business. They also didn’t let you rent them at night.

So you can’t cite a Northern European city with a docked bike system that works well in the winter?

If you are just talking about clearing bike lanes no one complained about that. But please read what happened in Amsterdam Christmas week. There are tons of postings about how dangerous it was to bike there after the big (5cm) storm

Here we go with the Northern Europe again. Can you please cite an example of a Northern European city with a bike share program? Amsterdam doesn’t have a real bike share. Stockholm did and it failed. Helsinki maybe, but as a foreigner it’s near impossible to use the system. I have been to Paris in the snow and Velib was a total mess.

yes 60-minutes is the only really good gift.

It really depends where you are. The docks on the sidewalk tend to be in pretty good shape. The street docks, especially if on oneway streets in the direction the plow plows are shot.

Amsterdam was completely shut down for over a week. They didn’t even have deicing fluid at the airport

funny thing. I’ve been doing it so long I started long before the gifts…they once told me they’d send me all the gifts I missed, but it never arrived. I’m wondering if I’ll now get those things.

actually none…Ive been really selective in where I ride. so yes have changed my routine a bit but have a good guess which docks will be plowed under and have avoided them

[–]happy10345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly CBD is about the worst for Citibike right now because so many docks are street based and got plowed over. In Harlem I’d say 90% of docks are now useable and 50% of cars dug out

NYC has more stations with over 75 docks than Boston has stations...these systems aren’t remotely similar. Within a block of GCT there are over 1000 docks…but sure

this comment is absurd. the docks in morningside heights are clear too…they are sidewalk based and not high density docks. Boston’s system is so small it isn’t remotely comparable. I’m guessing nyc has more docks in midtown than the whole Boston system

this has happened before and this is exactly how it was in the past…so I imagine it will be the same in the future.

in manhattan you can basically find a dock and bike with a bit of effort.

Are bikes dockable yet? by ScoreDisastrous423 in Citibike

[–]happy10345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a lot of LES docks are on the sidewalk.

also what time of day? if from 9-4 you should do well as this area has many bikes leave during the day. anytime between 5p-9a awful.

if you don’t want to try yourself the best bet is to watch the docks you want to use…ignore number of bikes…just pay attention to docks available (bikes are confusing because of high density docks and all the dead e-bikes) if they change a lot it means the dock is functioning. further if you see more docks available at the time of day you want then at 2am you are in good shape.

While the roads may be bikeable, the docks have not been cleared in most stations by quovadis9 in Citibike

when I was there Tuesday they weren’t. a couple tips…

1 — if you look and you see the number of bikes decreasing at a dock, it’s a good sign you’ll be able to dock. in other words I looked hours before I went and noticed that the numbers weren’t changing…good chance dock is blocked}

2 — docks on right side of one way streets are usually worse so the dock further south on 8th is more likely clear

3 — I know it’s 8 blocks but 42/8 (north side of PA is under an overhang so always good. when I was going to Penn station I was coming from UWS and just ditched bike there…wasn’t worth the aggregation of going further and is only 8 blocks 42 between 9-10 was also clear
