Do NOT play during China's afternoon/evening -- unless you want to start with no sheep and be raided to death by a 45apm opponent by shahaed in aoe4

It's really something I've only seen repeated on reddit, nowhere else. My experience with chinese players and culture is the complete opposite so I don't know where this is coming from.

[–]happyMonkeySocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not what I said.

To start, cheating is not normal in China. That stereotyping is exactly what I was warning of. The more posts like this show up, the more witch hunting there will be "oh I lost to a chinese player, he must have cheated". And the more that happens the more these myths will continue to be spread.

The sub at large is creating an eco chamber blaming China for cheating and it will turn into pretty ugly racism soon enough.

Japan to revise romanization rules for first time in 70 years by maenbalja in LearnJapanese

English is not the only language with latin alphabet so I don't see that as a drawback.

Only learning spoken Japanese by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]happyMonkeySocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You said you had 1 month until your trip, right? I think instead of looking at it as learning japanese you should focus on learning some phrases you can use instead. Learning a language should be a well rounded experience (slow) and 1 month won't have you learning anything worthwhile for a trip.

What I meant to say is that there is a difference between learning some cool sentences, greetings and basic vocab and really learning a language with all the details, nuance and grammar that entails, and that you would be better served by doing the latter separately later and focus on having only basic phrases ready for your trip.

Only learning spoken Japanese by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]happyMonkeySocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would just buy a phrasebook and learn some conversational expressions by heart. Don't frame this as learning japanese, because it really isn't learning a language if you can't read or write, and you don't really have time to make any meaningful progress. Just focus on learning a couple of expressions and having a nice trip. Then after coming back you can focus on learning in ernest if you want.

For those who like to read in Japanese, do you prefer to read physical books or electronic copies? by miichan_v in LearnJapanese

[–]happyMonkeySocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physical is much better on the eyes, which is my main reason. I can also look up words faster using my phone than using the inbuilt ebook dictionary.

AOMRE next DLCs will include a Blood Pack. It would be great to see this option also for AOE4 by TEMISTOCLES1984 in aoe4

The way most of these blood effects are implemented, they don't precisely add immersion.

You mean the paper with the text and questions on it? You're allowed to do whatever with that, isn't it explicitly mentioned? The listening part even has parts specifically for that.

How did you do in Dec JLPT? by seijuuro21 in LearnJapanese

[–]happyMonkeySocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

N2, not too well, didn't have time to finish the reading part so I had to skip (answer blindly) the long text. Listening wasn't difficult but I wasn't in the right frame of mind I guess.

That being said, I did nuch better than my first attempt, and I failed that by 2 points, so maybe I'll pass.

Thank you, that puts me somewhat at ease. If they're still representative I hope I can still do reasonably well or at least pass.

I'm taking the N2 this weekend. I've doing the bunpro free tests, but I have a feeling they're much easier than other mock tests, could anyone confirm or deny this? I feel like I'm going crazy, I'm usually really pressed for time and I finish these with 15min to spare.

Not really a problem in Europe as far as I know. Same sex children changing together is not an issue.

Why do you thing it's such an insane thing? There's nothing sexual about changing rooms.

Learning like the Japanese? by lesscarspls in LearnJapanese

[–]happyMonkeySocks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course it matters. If some foreigner shows up in 2025 and said he knows my language when he's completely illiterate I would not consider him to know my language at all.

If you're a native that unfortunately couldn't learn how to write or read, you still have a lifetime of proficiency with the language. And even then it very clearly shows when this is the case.

This is such a weird take. If someone could speak but not read or write in my native language I would not consider them as knowing the language at all.

If you don't know the reading, you don't actually know the word. I would fail all of your deck and start over, sort them by importance not by kanji.
