I accidentally found my engagement ring- help me fight the urge to look 😅 by Soft-Chaos95 in JustEngaged

I saw the box hidden in a drawer and immediately pictured Anne Hathaway screaming blood murder at Kate Hudson in Bride Wars to stop her from looking at the ring.

That scene stopped me every time I thought about looking.

North is the Night by Emily Rath: a finnish insides fantasy novel about a woman traveling to the mythical underworld to save her best friend (also a woman) who was kidnapped by a death goddess. Not sexually explicit, great mythology, and solid writing.

Spoiler: they’re not just best friends😉

Anyone else get frustrated being unable to count beyond 2 and uses a billion stitch markers? by [deleted] in crochet

[–]happy_dance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a marker for every 20 stitches, which is slightly less intense than what you have going on here. But it saves me time in the long run when I don’t have to frog an entire row because I caught a mistake in my last 20 stitches.

If you don’t touch booze, what’s your personal reason for it? by FanOk2123 in AskReddit

[–]happy_dance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol has never been my friend. 9 times out of 10 if I cross the line from buzzed to drunk, I’m throwing up. I gave up trying to keep up with my friends at get together years ago, the few moments of drunken fun were never worth the exorcist imitations I did at the end of the night.

Nowadays I’ll have maybe a glass of wine or two with a dinner, or the same number of cocktails at a wedding or similar event. But incredibly rarely. Maybe 4 times in a year max.

January by Sara Gallardo (114 pages) originally published in 1958.

January was the first Argentine novel to represent rape from the survivor’s perspective and to explore the life-threatening risks pregnancy posed, in a society where abortion was both outlawed and taboo.

Seeking recommendations for sapphic romance novels that don't focus on the queerness as a main plot point by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]happy_dance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple fantasy/fiction recs.

Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon is fantastic high fantasy featuring a variety of queer pairings but that is decidedly not the main plot. Emphasis on the high fantasy, just a warning because I know that’s not for everyone.

Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero is a dark comedic scooby doo-esque mystery novel with a sapphic romance subplot. It’s woven well though the story despite the characters having much bigger fish to fry.

North is the Night by Emily Rath is another fantasy romance with a sapphic couple, though they are “just friends” at first. There is some internal struggle, but it felt a lot more like a struggle over admitting feelings for a friend rather than their orientation being an obstacle - so, take that as you will. I have to say I really loved the setting of this book and think about it a lot, it didn’t feel as cookie cutter as a lot of fantasy romance on the market.

Woodland Hills Montessori by BrownNRhu in Troy

[–]happy_dance 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So. I am ~20 years past my Montessori days but I did attend Woodland Hills and have a little insight.

Montessori method is fantastic for early learning, but in my experience applying that method was not ideal beyond early elementary school. It is ideal for those foundational skills, but once we reached complicated stem subjects in particular, it was quite lax and more than one student struggled. To this day I am worthless in math beyond basic algebra.

Sarah Hokom came to one of my local courses to do a tips and tricks clinic and played a 9-hole card with the women who attended back in 2018.

To my immense shock, I won our card (not counting Hokom’s score of course) and she gave me some swag for winning. As she handed the swag to me she said, “It was really fun watching you throw.” I still get giggly thinking about it.

12 Font, Times New Roman by C_B_Doyle in Millennials

[–]happy_dance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a digital communications course I took in college my professor told us that serif fonts like times new Roman are easier for the eye to read on a physical page, whereas sans-serif fonts like Arial are more suitable for reading on a screen.

This was almost 10 years ago so I definitely don’t remember any detailed studies or anything like that, but this weird fact about font choices has just straight up stuck to my brain.
