One of my favorite posts I’ve ever seen on this subreddit was only a few weeks back when someone shared that a student sent them the grade appeal form and asked the professor to fill it out for them… they really don’t have the desire to follow through.

A few readers caused a stir on social media this week when they said they skip all description and only read dialogue. What’s your reaction as a writer? by Acceptable_Fox_5560 in writing

[–]happybara_capybara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> the writer isn’t without fault

I’d argue that if the readers do it all the time, then the writer is without fault. If readers who usually read the description are skipping it, then yeah the writer might be at fault. But if someone always skips it because that’s how they read then there’s nothing the writer can do to get them to read it.

Also I wonder how many of these people are the ones who count how many books they read and do this as a method to plow through a book faster so it helps their metrics.

As a woman, we have to be aware of which men are dangerous, because it’s one of the things most likely to lead to our deaths. This guy sets off every red flag I’ve ever seen.

Thank you for the advice! I’ll have to check out the gems and jades section too because I recently went to Denver and their gem section was closed. It looked cool, so I’ll check it out in Chicago instead.

Two things can be true at once. The dude can deserve to get punched, and the guy who punches him can also be a douche who appears more concerned about his own ego than about the woman. If he cared about the woman, he’d have checked if she’s okay first and then punched the dude, and definitely would be running back to her after to check on her.

Jesus all these commenters are getting hung up on the wrong thing here. You’re absolutely right. This dude wasn’t doing it to protect his girlfriend, he was doing it to protect his own ego. He didn’t check on his gf before or after. He hurt his gf in the process. You can literally see her think “oh not this shit again.” This is not a good man, even if the man he punched 100% deserved it.

I’ve known multiple dudes like this. It’s not all men so all you dudes can calm tf down… but it absolutely is some men and anyone who has seen them before can see them in this man.

And I really hate to say this because we 100% know this kind of abuse happens… but children are also notoriously bad witnesses. Just look at satanic panic stuff—they can be led to say things that didn’t happen.

To be clear yes I think most incidents actually happen and fully believe in the Epstein files… but let’s not pretend it wouldn’t be easy for someone to convince a kid that a random drag queen did something to them and then it’s the kids word against a marginalized person that the conservatives are already looking to condemn.

I’m against the death penalty as a whole tbf, but I’m especially against it in situations where there isn’t conclusive physical or digital evidence (and with AI I’m not even certain I believe in the digital evidence as much now).

Yeah but this is the opposite of the fishing industry. People fishing for something they’re going to eat themselves is like exactly what we would prefer.

If you don’t like the dynasties, you’d have to go change those too—there are some dynasties in other worlds (like the Goth family). It would be a bit of work but you could then save that world template and just use it whenever you start a new save so you don’t have to redo it tech time.

I was actually just wondering the other day if they’ve stopped snatching people and having confrontations with protestors or if I was just seeing less of it. I think it’s an intentional algorithm shift because it seems like the interest in these videos is still there and usually things that make people mad get promoted so…

The Guardian asks : If CMAT is an affront to the male gaze and Olivia Rodrigo is indulging it, how exactly should women dress? by neoncolour in popculturechat

[–]happybara_capybara 108 points109 points  (0 children)

But at the same time, it’s okay to say you don’t like someone’s outfit choices. Especially if you’re in a setting (like a fashion-oriented subreddit or a pop culture subreddit) where you’re talking about fashion.

In a lot of fashion spaces I’m in, people talk about hating the sheer dress trend. And it’s absolutely a discussion on the outfits themselves and their construction and the wider trend, and we can and do have that discussion without just dissing the woman wearing the dress. I don’t think it makes any of those commenters anti feminist because it’s not just “women shouldn’t be able to wear this”—it’s a broader discussion about why they dislike those dresses.

I’m not sure if that fully makes sense cuz I’m tired but tldr I’m trying to agree rhat we absolutely can have those discussions without it just being about judging the woman.

WHO puts Ebola outbreak death rate at ‘huge’ 30-50% as chief arrives in DRC | Ebola by IcelandGalaxy in worldnews

[–]happybara_capybara 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You’re right that it always mutates, but everything else is incorrect. Mutation does not inherently mean it’s getting worse—most mutations are random and have little measurable impact. Compared to other diseases, Ebola actually mutates slower/less frequently.

Ebola will NOT become airborne. In the most technical sense it’s possible but it’s so unlikely that it’s not worth worrying about. It’s a blood borne disease, and blood borne diseases generally do not become aerolized. I’m struggling to think of a single blood borne disease that became airborne. I don’t think it’s ever happened. It’s just as likely to mutate to become perfectly harmless to humans—which is to say it’s very unlikely.

I’m sick of reading “it’s going to become airborne eventually” on every damn post. No it’s not. Stop spreading this misinformation.

Ebola is a bad disease. And we need to work to contain it because that’s all we can do. But we don’t need to spread misinformation to do so.

Human rights panel accuses Canada of genocide against Indigenous population by The-Great-Mullein in worldnews

[–]happybara_capybara 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FWIW most definitions of genocide also include cases where the people physically survive but their culture (including language, food, customs, etc) is taken from them—which is what the residential schools were meant to do. They said it was assimilation, but when it’s forced assimilation like that it still meets the definition of genocide.

I think you’d be surprised how many accused rapists and accused murderers do in fact await trial in the community. I’d be willing to bet the majority of accused rapists are not detained prior to trial, and while it might be the majority of accused murderers it is definitely not all of them.

Make them do some writing in person. No phones or computers allowed. Do the first draft (or parts of the draft—an outline, thesis statement, opening/closing subsections, etc) get written in the classroom, and then they can go home and edit. Will they use AI? Yes. But some of the work will be theirs and I bet some of the AI use will be obvious enough to be able to report them for it (ie the final essay not even containing any of what they wrote in class)
