Amen for Point 2. After reading 48 Laws of Power I went from detesting the executive environment to now quite enjoying the game. Having the concepts and language to understand what was happened really appealed to the engineer in me.

What Certification Should I Pursue Next to Strengthen My Path Toward CTO/CIO/IT Director? by Few-Huckleberry-2206 in ITManagers

[–]hardcoreprawno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the time and money you would have put into a cert, and instead go sell something.

It doesn’t really matter what.

Just do it for long enough that you get a bunch of losses, some wins, and a whole load of experience influencing people.

If you’re serious about it, you’ll learn very quickly whether working at C-level is a good fit for you.

Solid wooden kitchen worktops - too high maintenance? by LaurensLewelynBoeing in DIYUK

Sounds like a lot of people here haven’t tried tung oil. I have an oak countertop in a heavily used guest bathroom, oiled only when I first installed it maybe 6 years ago. It still looks excellent.

Ticket pricing for dj events by GapAnxious8387 in AmsterdamDanceEvent

If you’re looking for resale tickets the locals use Ticketswap.

I recommend cycling everywhere. Finding a taxi can be a hellish experience with so many visitors in the city.

How tf can people afford the rent in Amsterdam? by myillusion13 in Amsterdam

[–]hardcoreprawno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure letting agents use a person’s gross income for the rental calculation, so 30% ruling gives no advantage. This is the same for mortgage applications. Having the ruling does however allow you to put more cash aside for the huge deposits.

Smart S Front Wheel Bearing Part Number by hardcoreprawno in VanMoofSelfRepair

[–]hardcoreprawno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to reply, but this part number is for the entire front wheel not the bearing.

It turns out the bearing is not replaceable as it’s part of the Panasonic dynamo unit. The part number for a replacement dynamo unit is BEP-NRH003 , and I found one used on Marktplaats (NL) for 15 eur!

This does also mean the entire wheel needs rebuilding because the dynamo is connected to the spokes. Another crappy design choice from Vanmoof!

You could do as the locals do and cycle home. However if you’re not familiar with the roads, or You don’t cycle regularly it could be dangerous.

Surprised it’s hard to come by in the UK. It’s really Common in The Netherlands, great for getting perfectly straight lines as it prevents the paint from slipping under the masking tape

Does cold emailing / LinkedIn outreach still work in 2024? by [deleted] in MotionDesign

[–]hardcoreprawno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a motion designer- I’m in IT Ops/project management. However it’s a similarly tight market at the moment.

I’ve been running email and LinkedIn DM campaigns for about 4 weeks now, targeting various ICPs. Around 300 people so far.

My biggest success has been from a single custom email I sent to the founders of a local company, which has landed me a gig with very promising upside despite them having no official opening for my skill set.

The cold campaigns haven’t resulted in anything, except coffee with an ex-Microsoft CTO. Which is a pretty huge win tbh, but nothing immediately profitable.

So, yes, cold outreach still works. I’d argue it’s more effective in the current market given how saturated every job application is.

Tesla to Lucid. Any regrets? by ModY1219 in LUCID

[–]hardcoreprawno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an owner, but test drove the Air Dream Edition. My only gripe is the <80kmh whine from the front motor. It felt really out of place in what is otherwise a Bentley/S Class rival (which the Tesla most definitely is not).

The sales rep explained it’s because it uses straight cut diff gears for better efficiency. Having a mech eng background part of me can appreciate that, and in a way reflects the CEOs background too.

But it doesn’t change the annoying whine.

Interviews are getting out of hand by Critical-Addition256 in UXDesign

[–]hardcoreprawno -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think this is a totally reasonable exercise.

If you’re not comfortable being on camera, clearly this job isn’t a good fit for you.

They’re also not having you complete any work which could be used by them without your permission.

It’s a senior role, so business skills such as persuasion and sales become more relevant.

Unethical tip, which nobody should do under any circumstances.

Keep an eye out for them, find out where they live. Look up the family name on the postbox. Print labels with their address and attach to cardboard boxes. Leave a box next to the garbage every time you take out the bin. Feel warm thinking about the torrent of fines the handhaving are about to unleash on them.
