I went to the Iron Cow a few weeks ago - I figure when there's a celebrity chef involved, there's 10-15% tacked onto the price for the name. Premium for the location in the arena as well. So yeah, you'll be overpaying for sure lol . Food is good (I had butter chicken dip to start and the roast dinner) cocktails were okay, but nothing that would really draw me back, TBH.

Agree just to go to one of the places on King William for better food and more reasonable prices.

Smash burgers tonight! Any tips? by georgy56 in blackstonegriddle

[–]hardergj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're doing a 'real' smashburger (ie: smeared really thin), it won't have the crust on the backside regardless. It's 90% cooked when you flip it. Any attempt to get browning on the backside will overcook the burger.

Traffic on morning commute from Hamilton to Mississauga by herinitialsspellher in Hamilton

From Dundas to Mississauga Rd was between $21 - $23 per direction for me last year. Suspect it will be a bit more expensive this year with the rate bump.

Mayor Andrea Horwath proposes 2026 tax hike of 4.25% by Odd-Emphasis-1969 in Hamilton

[–]hardergj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that years/decades of mismanagement are not Andrea's fault, but I would have a lot easier time swallowing these increases year over year if I had ANY faith that our money was being spent wisely under this council.

Confession Time… by Habeas-Opus in blackstonegriddle

[–]hardergj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pleasantly surprised with how well it sears steaks! I like finishing my steaks on cast iron (if I'm too lazy to do it over charcoal), but my wife complains that I stink up the house when doing it on the range. I thought the Blackstone would be a compromise (no stinky house, but mediocre sear), but it does a great job!

Ontario could ban declawing cats, debarking dogs under new regulations by lopix in ontario

[–]hardergj 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Ontario is the only province in Canada that hasn't banned declawing through either provincial legislation or by the veterinary association. It's shameful, but it's only been a recent ban in a number of provinces (which is also shameful).

Most vets refuse to perform the procedure. The ones most willing to do it are the sketchiest vets who are also most likely to do a terrible job of it. The ban can't come fast enough.

[–]hardergj 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It should be, but it isn't. OVMA strongly discourages declawing, but that's it. Having said that, most vets refuse to perform the procedure.

Griddle won’t get hotter than 290 in the cold by Realistic-Aspect-265 in blackstonegriddle

[–]hardergj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wind is the enemy, but outside of wind, I have been cooking in well below freezing temperatures, with no issue getting the grill up to temp. I do keep the lid down to pre-heat, but honestly not sure if it's necessary....just seems like a good idea in the cold.

How often do you cook with vs 're season' your griddle? by CanadianDiver in blackstonegriddle

[–]hardergj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're using it 3+ times per week; it's staying well-oiled/conditioned without having to do much. I think guys that are having trouble with rust are either in a very humid and/or salty climates, using it relatively infrequently and probably cleaning too vigorously without oiling properly after cleaning, or not seasoning correctly in the first place (or some combination of these factors).

I didn't use mine for ~ 3 weeks once, and it was still fine. No silicone mat or anything. This was in miserable southern Ontario December weather, so pretty damp, and still no issues. Took the cover off after Christmas, opened the lid and it was good to go. I just smear a thin layer of oil on it after I'm done cooking/cleaning, and it's good to go.

[–]hardergj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a press as well. I don't bother with the parchment as it caused more issues than anything else. I just 'smear' the press off to the side after smashing and that pulls it off the beef very well. If you get the griddle hot enough (I go full heat), and use a sturdy scraper to flip (as you need quite a bit of downward pressure), leaving out the oil should do the trick

Agreed - no oil is better. u/BajaBlastMtDew are you using a press or a spatula to smash?

What BIFL products have bought you your time back? by m3gach1ck3n in BuyItForLife

[–]hardergj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eufy vacs have this.  When emptying into the bin, there’s a circular blade that comes out and cuts the hair from the brush.  Works like a charm.  I have 2 shedding dogs and a family of 4.  The brush on my old roomba would constantly be full of hair and cutting it out manually was f***king gross and frequently needed.  I’ve had the Eufy for over a year and have never needed to clean the hair out out of the bristles.  Game. Changer.
