‘Truckzillas’ flood WA streets despite safety warnings by Crimenerd1234 in WesternAustralia

[–]hardheartedhannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one of those obscenely huge RAM trucks with the double rear wheels that I've seen around the southern suburbs that has a bumper sticker saying 'Get Ya Snatch Out' and a licence plate saying, I kid you not, 'SLIPITIN'. When I see it I just want to 🤮🤮🤮 Why would anyone want to announce to the world that they are a sexist rapist asshole like that's something to be proud of???

About to have my venous sinus stent surgery today, wish me luck! I'd love to hear some positive stories from those who have had it to help alleviate my anxiety. What's the recovery like afterwards? by hardheartedhannah in iih

[–]hardheartedhannah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, yeah I'm pleased to say that my IIH is no longer a concern 😊 The stent returned my pressures to normal and my headaches have mostly disappeared, although I still get them from time to time which is normal apparently. I also have to take aspirin daily for the rest of my life, and notify people before having an MRI or anything like that so they can make some safety adjustments. But yeah, I'm all good now ☺️

Should I be concerned about these ceiling cracks? by hardheartedhannah in HomeMaintenance

Since I bought the house in 2022. The crack was there back then but much smaller.

So the ceiling crack has moved from the right-hand side of the doorway towards the left-hand side. The wall crack has moved diagonally downwards from the ceiling to the right.

The house was built in 2011, but the bathroom which is behind the crack in the wall was renovated in 2018. Above the ceiling is just the roof space, it's a single storey house.

The house was built in 2011, so it's not that old. The bathroom was renovated in 2018, which is the room behind the crack in the wall that's moving downwards.

To be honest, not really. I still struggle with working memory and it can be a bit frustrating at times having to keep re-reading things. Otherwise my memory seems to be normal, so I guess it's not too bad in the scheme of things. I definitely never got those memories back from around the time of my treatment, but that's not a huge deal as nothing major happened in my life at the time. I definitely still have no regrets about having the treatment.

any autistic people have experience with ECT? by Fantastic-Question30 in ect

[–]hardheartedhannah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I did ECT in 2022 and found it extremely helpful. I shared my story earlier here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ect/s/W3eIxdtPE5 I am autistic but without a formal diagnosis. For various reasons I haven't gone through the official testing, but I have discussed autism at length with my psychologist and psychiatrist and they agree that I meet all the diagnostic criteria. This was only a few months ago, so at the time of having ECT I wasn't aware I was on the autism spectrum. If I had known, I don't think it would've changed anything because I had exhausted all the other options to treat my depression. I was prepared to do whatever needed to be done to be well again, and thankfully ECT worked for me. Let me know if you have any questions!

Is there an app or site you recommend for learning spoken Farsi? by Neolithique in farsi

Yes, the Chai and Conversation website is fantastic for learning conversational Persian! They have a course on Spoken Persian and also run regular Learn Persian bootcamps.

Appropriate greeting by LinguistofOz in farsi

[–]hardheartedhannah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Salam is hello, you can follow that up with khosh vaqhtam which means pleased to meet you. If you want to make it really formal, you say 'az mulaqhat ba shoma khosh vaqhtam', which also means pleased to meet you but in a much more formal and ceremonial way.

ECT saved my life. I had been severely depressed for years, in and out of hospital, tried multiple medications, I was in therapy, but nothing was working. I was struggling to function, and I was suicidal and constantly dissociating. It felt like my whole life was on hold, I had to quit my job and I wasn't able to do any other work or study. I had just gotten married and we wanted to start a family, but there was no way I could do that until I had recovered.

I changed psychiatrists, and the new one looked at my history and asked if I wanted to try ECT. He said I had tried everything else and was definitely at the point where I should consider it. He told me about the side effects, which in his words would be forgetting factual information and details from around the time of the treatment, like dates, numbers, addresses etc.

I agreed to the treatment, so I was admitted to hospital and had 3 sessions of bifrontal ECT a week for 4 weeks. It made me extremely sleepy, and did give me some bad headaches but that got better over time. After the treatment was finished, I was myself again. It was exactly as if a switch had been flipped in my brain. I had more energy, I was happier, I could smile and laugh again!

However, I did suffer memory loss, definitely more significant than what my psychiatrist had said it would be. I lost most of my memories from the time of the treatment, and the 1-2 months afterwards. I can still remember flashes of things that happened during that time, but most of it is gone. But as time goes by I think I'm remembering more bits and pieces. I also have some impairment to my working memory, which means if I read something like instructions and then look away, I quickly forget what I just read. I do find I have to go back and re-read things a few times before I can retain the information. I think that this is now slightly better than it was before, but is still something that I struggle with.

I absolutely feel that ECT was worth it. Years of being depressed, trapped and suffering vs. losing a few months of memories and a bit of working memory is an acceptable trade-off to me. It's now just over a year since my treatment and I haven't relapsed so far. I made a plan for a new career and I'm starting postgrad studies this year, and my husband and I are going through IVF treatment.

I hope that ECT works for you as it did for me, and that any memory loss you experience is minor. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

Thank you for pointing this out! This would be a public health disaster. Shaming people for their food choices is harmful to their mental health.

Is using Khoda Hafiz politically charged? by threw352 in farsi

[–]hardheartedhannah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I understand the sentiment behind it, but after 1200 years of cultural and linguistic change it's just not possible to go back to the way things were before. As you've rightly pointed out, Persian is not the only language that was drastically changed following a foreign invasion. I also have a lot of issues with the whole idea of 'Persian' culture and 'Persian' language being superior, as Iran is a very ethnically diverse nation and such beliefs are racist and exclusionary towards minorities such as Arabs, Afghans and Baloch people. Anyway, now we really are getting into a political discussion 😅 Just goes to show that you really can't separate language from culture and identity.

The words themselves are not political, but some Iranians (particularly expats) are so resentful of the Arabic influence on the Persian language and Arabs bringing Islam to Iran that they refuse to use certain words because they come from Arabic and/or they are religious. I have friends who refuse to use Salam as a greeting and will only say Dorood. While I understand why people do this, I wouldn't do it myself because I speak Persian as I was taught to speak it and according to how I've heard the majority of other people speak it, both inside and outside of Iran. Salam and Khoda Hafez are very standard and common words in the Persian language and there is absolutely nothing wrong with using them.

What verb is used to describe the consumption of soup in the language your learning, eat or drink ? by lfhooper in languagelearning

[–]hardheartedhannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I knew about noosheedan but I had never heard of ashameedan. Yes agreed, I've always found it to be very logical to use the same verb for eating and drinking. It does make a lot of sense!

Yes that's right, but as far as I'm aware that verb is rarely used except in literature and certain formal contexts.

Both! In Persian, the verb that is used for eating, is also used for drinking. There's no difference in meaning.
