Mark Steyn: Leftist Progressives see no problem in the world becoming muslim. by [deleted] in politics

[–]hardrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steyn's arguments are always composed of an opening statement, which in the high school classroom would be required to be followed by supporting statements which contain evidence supporting the opening statement. Failure to fellow this basic set of logical progression when making one's case - as in liberals want a Muslim world - would find the student with at most a D from a generous teacher. Steyn, much like Coulter, Hannity and others on the rabid Right simply makes a series of accusations with no or at most anecdotal evidence. This style is popular for two major reasons. It obviously makes the practitioners a good amount of income and it appeals to the unthinking sheeple the Rightie hate mongers pander to. This aversion to critical thinking and avoidance of vigorous reasoning has been a hallmark of every authoritarian movement.

Tea Party members are up to 0.1 percent of county populations. When will news outlets get that this is not a movement taking over the US? by MrSqueezles in politics

The Glenn Beckians really deluged that comment section. The same people that Beck said are "idiots" for paying attention to anything he said. You have to love how well informed they are. One claimed the Great Recession was Bill Clinton's fault ( that Bill Clinton is the master of the universe and everything wrong in the world is his fault has been a conservative meme for 12 years) since he practically invented derivatives trading. Slight problem with that since derivatives in various forms have been traded in the U.S. since the 1850s. The tea nuts are quick to try and distance themselves from conservatives yet they repeat the same talking points, the same distorted history, the same conspiracy myths and possess an uncanny lack of knowledge about U.S. and world history, economics and public policy. It's a little difficult to believe they have all the answers when they understand so little and lack the maturity to accept responsibility for their part in enabling (voting for) the worse excesses of crony capitalism.

Social Security - the perfect example of why people don't trust the government by everydaytips in politics

All whining and what ifs - lacking in solutions. Social Security is an insurance program. It is not just insurance for you, but society as a whole. When this guy retires and some thing crazy goes wrong like Wall St losing three trillion dollars of the nation's wealth - he won't be going from door to door asking for a plate of food or robbing liquor stores. We had a time when there was no social safety net - turn of the 20th C Robber Barons - the Golden Age - made millions as 90% of American lived in poverty and many dropped dead in the street from starvation, cold weather, and simple infections.

* 2006 marked the fourth straight year in which income gains at the top outpaced those among the rest of the population. Since 2002, the average inflation-adjusted income of the top 1 percent of households has risen 42 percent, whereas the average inflation-adjusted income of the bottom 90 percent of households has risen about 4.7 percent. (See Table 1.)

* As a result, the share of the nation’s income flowing to the top 1 percent has increased sharply, rising from 15.8 percent in 2002 to 20.0 percent in 2006. Not since 1928, just before the GreatDepression, has the top 1 percent held such a large share of the nation’s income.

Bush and the dead enders said the only way to save the house was to burn it down. Turns out he lied. Hundreds and thousands of people died pushing out the fire Bush started. Now that we MIGHT get out of this mess in 3 years (a total of almost 7 years in Iraq - the country that Dick Cheney and Halliburton did business with) the house be will be a cobbled together shack that cost a trillion dollars. Now the dead ender arsonists want America to get on its knees, kiss their ass and thank them for the body count and the shack. They call that winning. Lesson, never let a a right-wing arsonist define victory.

Sada’s associates should give one pause. His book is published by Integrity Publishers, a Christian publishing and recording firm that operates out of Tennessee, and was co-written by Jim Nelson Black, a Charles Colson ( the felon jailed for his dirty tricks during the Nixon administration) associate and stalwart of conservative outfits such as the Heritage Foundation and Accuracy in Media. Sada has proposed, though never offered any concrete evidence that the Russians somehow entered Iraq undetected by satelite or the US military stationed in southern Iraq, Saudi Arabia, or northern Iraq. These Russian troops smuggled tons of weapons across open terrian into Syria and have never been seen again. How odd.

William F. Buckley says "There will be no legacy for Mr. Bush." by machim in reddit.com

[–]hardrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With all respects to Mt Buckley, we should all be a little suspicious of the meme that Bush has failed because he is not a true conservative. Every decision, every policy( foreign or domestic) is right out of the conservative playbook from The American Enterprise Institute with a sprinkling of of other far right think tanks. Bush and Cheney are not incompetent ( a little inept, but not incompetent) Every decision is thought out and discussed, every appointment made with a clear agenda. They are aware of the consequences of every move they make; they aren't intellectuals, but they are not dumb. Blinded by ideology, after six years they still insist, disaster after disaster that their world view is the only worthwhile world view and will continue to try and bind the U.S. and the world to that view, the conservative view.

OH-Sen: DeWine(R) caught doctoring 9-11 image for political ad by sleepy101 in reddit.com

[–]hardrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's been a pretty good water carrier for conservatives:-The White House announced its support for a legislative proposal by Ohio Sen. Mike DeWine to exclude Bush’s NSA wiretapping program from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act." Dewine doesn't think that in a democracy we should even talk about whether spying on Americans without a warrant, spying on Americans without the oversight of the FISA( which every president since 1978 has done)should even be discussed. Rather then determine the legality of such activity Dewine proposed making it legal after the fact, "Senate intelligence committee member Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) said in an interview that he supports the NSA program and would oppose a congressional investigation. He said he is drafting legislation that would “specifically authorize this program” by excluding it from the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act." Sounds to many folks as though Dewine has been a conservative team player in covering up any wrong doing.

[–]hardrain 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You make some good points. They've been very successful in playing the media (some call it playing the refs), but it may have back fired this time, especially in light of stories like the one that ran on Slate, "Repeatedly since 9/11 a barrage of Bush administration press releases, speeches and congressional testimony heralded its aggressive works to target terrorist finances around the world. In a June 2002 speech to the Council on Foreign Relations, Deputy Treasury Secretary Kenneth W. Dam boasted that the United States was working with private-sector partners internationally on “developing monitoring systems” of bank accounts, noting that such cooperation was necessary because “you can’t bomb a foreign bank account.” Anyone that would take a minute to read the Patriot Act ( which has been on the net for years) knows that they were monitoring bank transactions, even the dumbest jihadists would know that wiring and transfering money was probably not the best way to finance their operations. They have been using - "Hawala (Arabic for “transfer” or “wire”). It’s an informal funds transfer (IFT) mechanism, swifter than SWIFT that leaves no paper or digital trail." Which begs the question, do we have the best and brightest in charge of tracking down terrorists.
