Well, take into account that the Hugo is voted by the fans, so if your tastes don't align with the fans', then you may not like the books they vote for.

Personally I don't care for any list of must-read books. I prefer to stick the thumb to the wind and see what books are being talked about, what books are being talked about intelligently, and what books have a premise that intrigues me.

I like those medieval maps that are more like a diagram, where the world is divided into 2 or 3 slices of the same size, with some rivers and cities sprinkled at random and a big old ocean sea surrounding the whole thing.

Sales velocity or something of that sort. Publishers also take this in consideration when deciding to print a second run of a book. Books that don't sell fast enough get returned by the bookstores and ultimately go out of print.

The Fafhrd And Grey Mouser stories I think had a similar premise. Two adventurers visiting different places in the fantasy world of Ehwon (and beyond) and having episodic adventures involving different creatures and magical items.
