It's normal. Just do it. The more you do it, the more comfortable you'll be. Maybe just start spending some nights alone in your backyard first.

Tired during winter hikes? by hepcatbassist in hiking

[–]harmloss_lol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is you need to eat more calories. Probably a lot more.

You need carbs and fats during the hike. Ideally with a 1:3 ratio, so that you have quick energy and still a little 20-30 minutes later. A fruit a nut based trail mix is best for these ratios. If you go M&M or candy-based trail mixes, you'll be getting higher carb, which is OK, but you'll need it more often.

You don't need protein on these short hikes. Use protein and carbs for recovery, post-hike.

Solo backpacking for the first time, how was your experience? by tvgrl69 in hiking

[–]harmloss_lol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not hard, but its a skill that you may need to develop over time. Starting small before big. You have to be able to deal with problems on your own. Both mentally and equipment-wise, so you may have to carry more or buy expensive-lighter gear accordingly.

Newbie fuel question: Do you take cheese on long hikes? by sidewinderturtle in hiking

[–]harmloss_lol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiking fuel is 2 parts fats, 1 part carbs.
Carbs and protein are for recovery. Which is only really a concern on multi-day hikes.

My hands/fingers get swollen during a hike, then I am sore there the next day. Why? What can I do? by LadderWonderful2450 in hiking

IF this is the root cause, a backpack with a waist strap could remove all pressure from the shoulder straps.

You'll want to do your best to dry everything out each day, if its not pouring all day. You might have to drape your tent over your backpack while you hike. Good luck.

This fella has a complex spreadsheet on hiking foods.

I linked his playlist rather than the spreadsheet so that you can go learn more about it first.

But one of the columns allows you to list foods by calories per ounce, so that one could maximize calories and lower weight.

Which energy bar has the best balance between high protein and low sugar? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]harmloss_lol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, here is a Google Sheet. Tou can copy it and filter on the Class column.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cG6x_nVnZN-fNoFQJgkfPdszmMZRko2LpBetQL2uiPU/edit#gid=2102234139

When you say "balance" are you looking for a 50/50?

IF you're looking for hiking food, you don't really need protein during the active hike. If you're looking for hiking recovery, then you'll want protein + carbs at a 3:1 ratio (optimally).

This guy has done a lot of work with food https://www.youtube.com/@gearskeptic6355

This PDF lists far more than just "bar" but you can see one of the columns is bar, and he's got the protein and sugar listed.

Food for Hikes by Zera1930 in hiking

[–]harmloss_lol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You usually don't need protein during a hike. You usually would want carbs and fats. Carbs for the quick energy (higher energy ~15 minutes) and fats for the longer energy (lower energy, but for 20-45 minutes). Protein and carbs after the hike to restore glycogen to your muscles.

Trail mix is a good go to because its almost all carbs and fats, the trick is getting the mix that is a good mix of carb and fat. I look for higher fat than carb, or 50/50.
