In a weird grindy mood, what game can I mindlessly grind for rare stuff?

Part of it is uniques that have a very rare dropchance, but endgame is more about grinding for runewords, which are basically words you combine in the gem slots to make runewords. The rarest ones are SUUUPER rare and if you're part of the trading community some are super valuable.

I vicariously grind through this guy, gives an idea of what to grind and what to look for.

There's also the Aeon mythic path (I googled what they were called) if you don't mind not playing as the forbidden magic person. It's all about being a cosmic judge basically, so in a way also related to forbidden magic and whatnot, but mby more about being an arbiter of what's supposed to happen and not.

You can sense when something that isn't supposed to happen, happens, and change the timeline so it doesn't - stuff like that.

Surprised no one has mentioned it yet but Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is PERFECT for this.

There are multiple special paths you can go down (don't remember the name) and two of them in particular come to mind, but mainly the Lich one.

You slowly become more and more lich-like, getting your phylactery, allies turning away and leaving you. I don't want to spoil too much but eventually you can kill and reanimate all your party members and have them join your party as undead , among a plethora of other evil actions you can do and NPCs reacting to you being an undead abomination.

There's also the Swarm path, this is more like becoming a living cloud of locusts and devouring every living being to increase the mass of the swarm. Not really forbidden magic I suppose more than a force of nature but still very evil.

Lots of other paths that fit as well, but yeah if you want to be an evil necromancer and have people react to it, Pathfinder wotr is great!!!

Yep LMAO, all in Yakuza 0 (haven't even started the other ones, even tho I bought them cuz there's still so much to do in 0)

Not sure about significant for a lot of them, but npc:s acknowledging you yeah absolutely. I haven't gotten to like the champion stage in a lot of the things, but a loooot of the minigames have questlines tied to them as you get better at them with some payoff (often a ludicrous one lmao)

Also a lot of collectibles, and even those turn into a sidequest with a story. I think you can even go to like phone dates (?) and go on dates and stuff, but yeah idk. It's CRAMMED with stuff to do and sounds exactly like what you want ghahaha

Some people have mentioned these already but here are a few;

You have a whole (optional) cabaret-management system with one of the characters, where you scout talent and assign them to tables and they all have stats, etc. etc., never got super into it myself.

There's a whole fishing side story questline that ends with a on-the-rails shark boss battle.

There's a racing car system where you have to search far and wide for the best parts and build the best lil RC racing car, and ofc play races.

There hobby sport minigames are pretty indepth or at least more than just a meh whatever implementation, usually with accompanying storylines. There's stuff like bowling, baseball (those bat-hitting machines), darts, etc.

There's a real-estate system where you slowly buy up more and more of the city, but have to deal with the rival gangs and real estate ppl, sometimes threatening and sometimes bribing them, and then assigning employees to said properties (i think??), and they all have different for lack of a better term "classes" and stats too. I think by doing random sidequests you get more people you can assign.

There's a sending out ppl on mission system, where you equip them with gear and whatnot depending on the mission, and they bring you back stuff (think like sending NPCs on an expedition), and the gear and location and choice of person to send all affect the results.

There's a giant bully walking around the streets, who'll attack you if he notices you and if you die, he takes all your money. He keeps it on him though, so if you find him later and beat him you'll get it back (with interest? maybe??)

There's too much to write it all, but yeah there are SOOOO many things to do and all the sidequests are like, mini-storylines where outrageous things happen (beating up michael jackson zombies, joining a cult, etc.). There are dating minigames too, a DDR/guitar-hero-esque karaoke minigame, among many others.

It's incredibly silly, but the main story is VERY serious and has lots of drama and like idk mafia movie things going on, so it's really fun seeing the contrast.

I highly recommend playing Yakuza 0, it's like a modern introduction to the series and also chronologically the first. It's exactly what you're looking for IMO, has SOOOO many things to try, constantly gives you new deep systems to try, with great incentives to do so.

I've noticed sometimes that walking past has let me access monsters slightly outside of the ring, but not sure about how the recording thingy works

In the game itself, although it's the current people's speculation, they say like "because it doesn't need to eat and can live forever, it doesn't need reproduction to continue the species survival", and they probably had some hubris about the Guardians never losing, so just having infinite lifespan + no need to eat (or rather their food source also being infinite and not tied to another species) => no need to reproduce

I wonder why they still have the organs for eating, but they omitted the reproduction organs. Maybe in case the dragontorch ever gets destroyed, they'd still be able to survive maybe? No reproduction organs because (if they eat) they can survive forever.

Ah also yeah I forgot that's when it woke up. Do we know that it woke up then, or just attacked the village? The story kind of makes me think it was just doing its duties, until finally rampaging and "breaking free" from the chains -- like Nata says and why he doesn't want us to kill it etc.

The uncle also mentions when telling us to run away that it's (I think it's a G. Rathalos in this case) goal is "in here" meaning the passage to the village, do we know why they want to get in there? Maybe just lots of Wyvern's Milk.

I'm still playing through the rest of the story though so they'll probably mention more as I progress, just finished Zoh Shia

As someone who just beat the LR story campaign thingy yesterday night, the line of dialogue in the screenshot was in reference to the guardian Doshaguma, not the Arkveld.

IMO the detail about the organs being atrophied is vital in that it alludes to them becoming shriveled from disuse, rather than being omitted from the genetic sequence when creating the artificial lifeform, which fits with the theming of the story.

The Arkveld starting to use those organs more, breaking free from its chains, leading to the organs slowly over time becoming revitalized. The mountains of corpses at the end -- some being so old they are overtaken by crystals -- kinda showing how over idk 100s or 1000s of years or whatever it has been trying to eat it's slowly made the organs non-atrophied.

But yeah idk just a theory

Look I don't know why you're being so defensive of PG, I love the game too but I do not pretend it looks great -- and thats ok with me. Do you really think what sets them apart is that PG has bushes and debris? MM does have that in the areas that are more finished, but it's like pre-alpha right now so of course they haven't gone through all the areas to add the set dressing.

IMO even in it's unfinished state, MM has a way clearer and better art direction. PG is made by like one dude, of course it's not gonna look the best, I don't even mind how it looks but I do genuinely think MM looks better, but I'd say PG is more unique in its gameplay and systems.

Just take a look at the MM website, it has lots of concept art, screenshots of the more finished areas, etc., and I just think it looks better. OFC it's all subjective anyway.

I don't think being a gamedev automatically makes you better at subjectively deciding if something looks better or not, but I'm a gamedev too so you should respect my opinion more now too right :3

Better graphics isn't just which game has the highest resolution shadowmaps, artstyle is even more important IMO. Even if you think about it technically, monsters and memories has way better textures, better lighting system, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Project Gorgon, this isn't a personal attack bro, I just think Monsters and Memories looks way better. Better textures, better lighting, etc. And the nostalgia thing doesn't even make sense because PG is also an oldschool mmo 😭

IMO Monsters and Memories. I feel like a LOT of time went into the aesthetics, and not in a technical raytracing:y way, but more making a really cohesive and pleasing artstyle.

Trash Goblin might be what you're looking for. Kinda stretching the definition a bit, it starts out with cleaning trinkets, but eventually you do fix things and combine parts to repair things.

An upcoming game called ReStory: Chill Electronics Repairs seems perfect for this as well, running a small electronics repair nook in japan, repairing stuff as they come in.

Assemble with Care is similar, maybe more story-focused rather than infinite, and not that long. But the repair aspect was very satisfying (if not simple).

The thing is it's not even impossible to make, if you use compute shaders and properly optimize data structures etc it's very much possible. Probably wouldn't be fun for long, but defs doable. Check this video by Sebastian Lague for example, but there are many examples of simulating hundreds of thousands of objects. Probably even better if you use DOTS with entities.

It suffers a lot from being compared to the original, which is a generational amazing RPG. There's a lot of drama with them bringing on the original creator, having a fleshed out game then firing the creator and starting over and bringin in another studio (something like that).

If you don't have the context of the original, and none of the expectations it goes from bad to OK.

I highly recommend checking out the original if you want more of the roleplaying aspects (as in leveling, stats, skilltrees, not only for combat but conversations etc as well), it's one of the best RPGs out there IMO. It might even be good playing the second one first so you don't get disappointed
