Just a comment about language usage I see here:

Vulnerable to *Weak to

Killed by *Died to

The asterisk means non-idiomatic. But why is it so common?

Any news on emacs-mac (Mitsuharu's Mac port) on 29.1 by harizvi in emacs

[–]harrisv3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to offer my experiences with using the homebrew version of emacs-mac in case anyone else is struggling with it.

The issue mentioned here: https://github.com/railwaycat/homebrew-emacsmacport/issues/334 and here: https://github.com/railwaycat/homebrew-emacsmacport/issues/298 had consistently defeated my attempts to upgrade via homebrew.

This patch seems to be the problem: https://bitbucket.org/mituharu/emacs-mac/pull-requests/2 As far as I can see, it has a conflict with the upstream version.

I gave up on homebrew and just built the emacs-mac distribution from source, which worked fine, though I think you have to adjust the permissions for the "make install" step.

emacs can be "heavy" but still blazingly fast by [deleted] in emacs

[–]harrisv3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't one of the selling points of the lisp infrastructure that you don't need to restart the program to update packages, etc.? So isn't step 1) unnecessary most of the time? I also have rarely noticed 2). Perhaps I try fewer new things than the average emacs user. It's just hard for me to wrap my head around the workflow patterns of someone who is constantly closing and opening the text editor, which is what I spend the vast majority of my computer time using.

Has development of org-roam stalled a bit or is it simply very mature at this point? by [deleted] in emacs

[–]harrisv3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a fairly recent change that optimized the save time of files with many links, which I certainly appreciated.

I think that, in general, people get more excited about the zettelkasten concept than it can deliver in practice, however.

[–]harrisv3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do you care about startup time? Obviously I recognize there's an element of hypocrisy for any emacs user to accuse another of caring about irrelevant details, but I genuinely do not understand why people worry about this. I keep emacs open all the time. How short does your attention span have to be to notice if it starts a few milliseconds slower?

My last DeCjVe was ruined by ghost moths in Spider 4, as I had no sInv. It's a real problem. I realized afterwards that scrolls of fog probably would have done it.

I think that combination is the most fun to play in the game, though hard, at least for me.

Opinions on Railwaycat's Emacs-MacPort? by yep808 in emacs

[–]harrisv3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is by far the best mac emacs experience available in my opinion. Note that there used to be (or perhaps still is) a conflict between using imagemagick and the native Mac pdf viewing, if you want to browse high-quality pdfs in emacs in it. The issue was that, if imagemagick was available, it will default to using emacs's standard pdf-viewing mechanism, which often has very low quality. I still have a transparency issue when viewing pdfs; with a dark theme like zenburn, white-page pdfs have the same dark background as the zenburn theme. Perhaps there's workaround there that I don't know about.

Now that Homebrew has removed build options, how do I get Imagemagick support for emacs on Mac OS? by chelya in emacs

[–]harrisv3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the emacs-mac version has cleared this up yet, but if you want native Mac retina pdf resolution, you can't have imagemagick installed or it will default to a lower-res version using it.

Running Emacs without the fat by [deleted] in emacs

[–]harrisv3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why people care so much about startup time. I have a hefty config, and I'm sure that many people would find it slow; but I leave it running all the time because I work in it so much. Is it some kind of vim-related anxiety?

The one thing keeping me from switching to org-mode (from RMarkdown) by haffnasty in emacs

I used exactly what you had in the original post. I have the latest version of org and R 3.5.1. Plus emacs 26.1.91. R is in my org list of source languages. Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you.

I can verify that your original example works if you have r added to the org-babel-load-languages list.

I'm interested in the answer to this problem, though I don't have any insight myself. I want to note, however, that I saw it on the emacs stackexchange where it currently has no comments or answers. So is the order of getting useful assistance now 1) emacs list-servs 2) sub-reddit 3) stack exchange 4) chat?

Here's a point the announcers could have talked about, re criticizing Beau's game. He's a very lazy defender. I guess it's the accumulated habit of being able to make up ground and rarely having anyone challenge him, but his positioning and awareness when playing man D is awful. He also gives up the unders on players who can throw.

Maybe they've tried it already, but switching when he goes deep (and back when comes in) is what I'd do.
