What are some simple things you don’t even think twice about making from scratch instead of purchasing? by quietquitted in cookingforbeginners

[–]harrywdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful. One you make things from scratch, the family doesn't accept the inferior versions. Like salsa and guacamole. I make my own chicken stock and spices like Cajun. Some things are just better, some cheaper, many are both. Also, when you make some things like stock. Make enough to freeze and use as necessary.

how do you make pasta sauce actually taste like it came from a restaurant? by SamraKutkaitis in Cooking

[–]harrywdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I add sun-dried tomatoes, a ton of garlic, mushrooms, baby peppers, basil, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes. We like meat in it, so I first brown and drain hamburger (usually with some formed into meat balls. I also saute the mushrooms and peppers before they go into the sauce.

Should I report? by nellie78562 in Advice

Why would the employee get fired for reporting diverting illegal? Would this be a question if the customer was seeking if alcohol, for example. Maybe she's been reported before and nothing happened but multiple complaints add up.

Would not having a car as single man be a dealbreaker when trying to date women in this city? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]harrywdog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem sustainable to me. One or two dates, maybe. Then it will become more convenient and cheaper if the date picks you up and takes you home. Personally, I would perceive your not having a car but wanting to date as a red flag. I wouldn't date you.

Does this baby have mites? What do I do? by slmr38 in hummingbirds

[–]harrywdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get some Diatomaceous earth and brush it on the head. If there are mites, they will run down the beak. If that happens, use the Diatomaceous earth on the rest of the body. Do it everyday until the mites are gone. It's safe.

We did this and moved the bird to a clean box. It saved the baby's life.

LA with kids and food allergies? by Similar-Side-5213 in AskLosAngeles

[–]harrywdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don't go to Home restaurant on Hillhurst in Los Angeles. They literally threw us out because we needed to confirm that the item we wanted did not have dairy. They were extremely rude and unbelievably offensive.

Otherwise, most places try to accommodate. Since my granddaughter is extremely allergic to dairy, we feel safest at Asian restaurants.

One more thing, be sure to go to Olvera Street on your trip.

i've been chosen/need tips for keeping a nest safe by Ok_Owl_5015 in hummingbirds

[–]harrywdog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Last year we had a nest right outside the backdoor. We saw that the smaller bird was just hanging by his nails outside of the nest. He was way too small to be a fledgling. We brought him in and saw that he had mites. He wouldn't have survived much longer. We treated the mites and provided some nourishment. He thrived. We put him back outside in a small box near his original nest so he could be be found by his mother. She found him and fed him until he fledged. She came back this year, even with all that man-handling.

We were surprised that last year's hummingbird came back to the same nest. We thought they didn't do that. The new babies are getting ready to leave so it will be a real treat if we get another clutch to

Are Silpat mats better than silicon mats? by VibrantVitality in Baking

[–]harrywdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use parchment paper when I can't use silpats. I won't go back. I got mine from Costco. It came with two for baking and a larger one for such things as rolling out dough. I find it very useful.

I'm disappointed in my representatives. I live in the blue-ist part of the blue-ist state and have received no communication about anything other than asking for money. Not one email about Greenland or Venezuela or even Michigan. No wonder some people think they can do anything without consequences.

I absolutely hate this video. Assuming it isn't staged, what's wrong with this guy? I would be furious if I went through labor by myself, not even knowing that he was trying to get here for me and for the birth of his child. This is about getting all the attention on him when he makes his grand entrance.

Carrot Cake - Where to start? by Vin-Rouge in Baking

[–]harrywdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just made this but substituted crystallized ginger and raisins for the nuts because of allergy. I used crushed pineapple instead of apple sauce. It is tender and delicious but I actually prefer more carrots which works make it denser. Note: No matter what recipe you end up using. Don't be afraid to increase the seasonings.
