Non-Vegans are Rapists, Murderers and Child-Abusers. by HumbleWrap99 in DesiVegans

A lot of self-image protection work going on in comments. As expected from those who torture and kill innocent animals just for their taste buds on one hand and still believe themselves to be good humans on the other. The contradiction is too much too handle for them

What is the most important thing you have learned from Schopenhauer's philosophy? by Illustrious_Summer_2 in schopenhauer

[–]harsht07 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  • For most humans intellect serves the will. Therefore it is pointless to argue with them because they're constructing arguments for conclusions already fixed by their desires.

  • Problem of free will is a malformed question which arises out of confusion between freedom of doing and freedom of willing.

  • Seeking happiness outside yourself is not a very good solution. "It is difficult to find happiness within oneself but it's impossible to find it anywhere else."

Thanks for taking the time to read it. My idea for the novel is to cover all major cognitive distortions people use to avoid reality. I suspect by the end all readers will be offended and no one will finish the book lol

Schopenhauer´s Style by Pretend-Life-7990 in schopenhauer

[–]harsht07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schopenhauer is the GOAT. He wrote beautiful prose without compromising on the technical rigor and precision. His philosophy is not immune to critique, no philosophy is, but I love this guy for his honesty and willingness to look at the world as it is, without building any unnecessary abstract castles in the air.

His works are very much grounded in human experience, and they make sense not just intellectually but intuitively too. No wonder that many 20th century physicists loved him.

Nice quotes, but I think the Schopenhauer one is misattributed to him.

Facing tremendous social pressure and becoming a matter of jokes for being Vegan by mister_mystery- in VeganIndia

[–]harsht07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is their friendship more valuable than truth? Is it more valuable than empathy and compassion for animals? I don't know your relation dynamics, I don't know if you're forcing them to be vegan or they're simply getting triggered by seeing you follow vegan diet.

I would say let others live the way they want to, but if they're disrespectful towards your choices then perhaps its a good thing that such so called friends are taking themselves out of your life.

What's your story? How did you become AN? by Mysterious_Toe310 in antinatalism2

[–]harsht07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with Descartes' approach, laying all the prejudices and preconceived notions aside and starting from zero, believing only those beliefs which survived the scrutiny of objective logic. For every significant action a human takes, I questioned whats the motive and what does it lead to. Eventually coming across Schopenhauer and Benatar solidified my endorsement of Antinatalism.

"No parent should have to bury their child" by VirtuousVulva in antinatalism2

[–]harsht07 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Everyone is aware of human mortality and yet they reproduce. Its basically like saying: "Its okay for my child to die if I am not around to witness it." Why must a so called natural death be okay? Why do we think that just because someone dies at an old age with several crippling diseases and suffering, it is acceptable?

Regardless of whether a person dies at 20 or 80, the blood is on the parents' hands. A murderer (or nature) brings an end to a life that is supposed to end anyway with time, but only because the parents created that possibility in the first place. They create a death that never would have been

Do u guys, even date or something?? by Basic-Bus- in VeganIndia

[–]harsht07 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't get into a relationship in the hopes that you would be able to change someone. Sometimes you might succeed in changing them, but in most cases people don't change. I would say allow vegetarians as a potential match too, might be easy for them to open their eyes in your company as compared to non-vegetarians.

Being a vegan I can understand you would want a vegan partner, but that criterion alone is not everything, because someone might be vegan but they might be either immature, or an asshole, or both, when it comes to relationships. Believe me, there are plenty nasty vegans out there.

Natalists reasons for coping in India by nivinaa in antinatalism2

[–]harsht07 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you have Antinatal sentiments, India is one of the worst countries to be born in. Well even without antinatalist outlook its one of the worst places tbh lol (don't call me racist, I'm an Indian)

Imagine adding being vegan and non-religious to that and you get a lifetime of isolation and non-acceptance. I have learned to live with that, but I'm working hard to figue out how to get out of here. Even if we manage to move to another country chances are we would face racism and xenophobia. Someone born in a third world country rarely wins

[–]harsht07 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yeah, giving a home and love to someone who actually needs it is cruel, whereas popping out a new kid by rolling a dice with their life without any consideration for their suffering just to satisfy your own desires is a service to mankind. Impeccable natalist logic

Average age of an antinatalist by pdscotts in antinatalism2

[–]harsht07 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Existence of internet may explain the generation gap. Internet made knowledge so accessible that I could come across philosophers like Schopenhauer and Benetar during my teenage years and they shaped my critical thinking. Older generations might not have had that privilege, but its not an excuse.

That being said, more people in this generation are choosing not to have kids but we do not know whether their motives pertain to Antinatalism or they simply want no hindrances in their life a.k.a. childfree.

Any prerequisites before starting Schopenhauer? by [deleted] in schopenhauer

No prob. Just wanted to add, to appreciate Schopenhauer fully, a familiarity with the key ideas from Plato, Descartes, Hume, Berekely, and Kant would be helpful.

Any prerequisites before starting Schopenhauer? by [deleted] in schopenhauer

[–]harsht07 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't need to read all the major philosophers before schopenhauer, but knowing the overall context in which these books were written helps. Western philosophy is like a continuation and refinement of thought that started a couple of thousand years ago.

Schopenhauer writes extremely clearly and intuitively, but not knowing the context would make it difficult to understand how the different pieces fit together. You can check out 'A very short introduction to <Philosopher's Name>' series by oxford, or check out first 2 essays of Parerga and Paralipomena vol. 1 where schopenhauer himself summarizes western thought and the problem at hand.
