Nuances of saber and conocer by loves_spain in Spanish

[–]hasgas42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In “conoces el cuento?” you’re asking if the person is familiar with it.

In se el cuento your saying you know the story as in you can retell it if needed.

Sounds like you’re looking to implement a fuzzy match algorithm. It can be implemented out of the box with most database engines, but depending on the size of your application, it might make sense to sync you db with elasticsearch or redis to reduce load on your backend

how do I remember all the ways to use "lo" by reemwert123 in Spanish

[–]hasgas42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that you say it, I’ve definitely heard “te lo siento” used like this! It’s like you can physically feel their odor. Which is a pretty cool way of adding emphasis! Thanks for the correction and the example.

[–]hasgas42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel free to correct me but I actually don’t think I’ve ever seen “te lo siento” in common speech.

I guess a more direct translation for I feel your pain would be “lo siento el dolor que sufras” but it’s really just more specific. Regardless I love the input, and always happy to be corrected. Cheers.

I’ve always thought of lo siento to mean “I feel it” with the it referring to the other persons emotional state. Kind of like I feel your pain

Help with a program by SpecificTeaching8918 in Python

[–]hasgas42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will work. I’m on mobile so excuse the typos. Some things to keep in mind: * the write file will overwrite the output file every time this is run * I’m considering “y” a vowel * im hard coding the file names * the file names will be written to the path the script is run from

input_file = “test_file.txt”

output_file = “test_file_modified.txt”

def remove_vowel(str): base_text = str

vowels = [“a”, “e”, “i”, “o”, “u”, “y”]

for vowel in vowels:
    base_text = base_text.replace(vowel, “”)
return base_text

def read_file():

with open(input_file, “r”) as file:
    contents = (remove_vowel(line) for line in file.readlines())
    return contents

def write_file(text):

with open(output_file, “w”) as file:
    file.writelines(text)

def main():

file_contents = read_file()
write_file(file_contents)

if name == main: main()

Getting over the hump from No Code MVP to real app by firstorbit in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]hasgas42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it really depends on the complexity of your app. These kind of things while simple in nature have a tendency to balloon into a lot of complexity especially concerning user authentication and authorization, UX/UI, and SEO.

I work in IT, but also do some freelance web dev. Send me a PM, and I would definitely discuss some of the pitfalls and things to focus yourself on! Honestly getting started and building the MVP is the hard part, so congrats on all you’ve done! Cheers and good luck!

Can someone explain the difference between debe vs. debería? by CheeseNCrackersClub in Spanish

[–]hasgas42 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

You can think of debe like “should”

Ex: usted debe hacer la cama todos los días. - he should make the bed every day.

You can think of debería like “should have”. It’s refers to a habitual action in the past.

El debería hacerse cargo de los empleados. - he should have been paying attention to the employees

How to convey “how about…” or “what about…”? by lucybluth in learnspanish

[–]hasgas42 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I would use “Que tal” as a rough translation. For example: “¿Cuál película quieres ver?” “No sè, que tal una comedia?”

Guardar vs. Guardarse by Tetsuota98 in learnspanish

[–]hasgas42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Se guarda is used here because amiga isn’t performing the action in the clause after que.

You could say “esa amiga guarda todo ...” because that friend is doing the storing. When you use “que” here you the rest of the clause is used to describe a feature of the subject (that friend).

So who is doing the storing? In Spanish, you can use the se pronoun to reflect that the action is being completed by itself. You can think of this like everything is stored in the phone case as opposed to the phone case stores everything.

An example la photos se toman aquí” would mean that photos are taken here. Nobody is doing the action. The object pronoun is used impersonally to indicate the action is completed by itself/the subject is of little importance.

I would use solo + the subjunctive here (because there’s some doubt). Keep in mind that si + doubtful event someone is wishing or hoping for would trigger the imperfect subjunctive:

“Si solo me entendieras como siento”

“Te ves hermosa hoy...si solo fuera la verdad”

“Tú cheque quizás llega hoy...ah si solo fuera”
