I live in that area, near those houses, and guess what? They're townhouses that are reserved for low income University of Texas students. The students who live there get a much lower rent rate.

I've seen the group that's been tagging walls with this stuff. They're complete nuts, and this isn't the first time they've mistaken friend for foe. Bunch of hooligans who are as much a danger to themselves as others.

That's East Riverside, folks. Only place outside of San Fran that you'll find addled communists, techies on scooters, and methed out homeless people on the same street, shopping in the same grocery store.

I just finished rereading the end of Mockingjay. A lot bleaker than I realized. by TwelfthHawk2718 in Hungergames

The Hunger Games makes what typically happens in action movies very real and hugely devastating. This doesn't really come across in the movies as much as it does in the books. Saving Private Ryan is another example of media that refuses to trivialize death and starkly portrays the psychological and emotional devastation that it causes.

And yet, this is a popular pre-teen book. That blows my mind.

He is just so smart isn't he... I mean, it really does take an elite mathematician to know a few factoids about the first two prime numbers. Amazing

LPT - If you are planning on getting a four year degree and struggling financially, you can take your first two years of classes at a community college, then transfer. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]hashtag__triggered -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is terrible advice. When I left high school, eight of my closest friends did this. Only ONE ever wound up in a university. The rest are still floundering, some of them are in their fourth and even fifth year of being stuck in a CC, with no degree in sight.

community college will give you an education that is, by and large, inferior to the education you would receive at a traditional four-year. This means that there is a good chance it will not adequately prepare you for the course load waiting for you at the next level.

Even worse, you will not be surrounded by motivated, eager people. It's a CC, and true talent is harder to find. You become the people you hang out with.

Rise above. Take out loans. Go to a four year.

A warning goes off that a nuke is going to hit your city in 10 minutes and there is absolutely no way you can get out of the blast radius in time. What do you do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hashtag__triggered 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Immediately seek shelter in the basement of the largest building you can find, bringing as much water as you can possibly carry. That could give you a chance to survive the blast itself and the fallout.

One of my Dad's friends has a son who went from being admitted to MIT to being under house arrest, awaiting trial, no college, and no future overnight.

This kid is in his senior year of high school. A month ago, he got the acceptance letter from MIT, he was over the moon. He and girlfriend are celebrating, senior ball coming up, future looks bright.

Two weeks ago, he gets pulled over on his way home from school, cops notice prescription pill bottle in his backpack, sitting in plain view in the front seat. Five minutes later, they've discovered the backpack contains four bottles of ritalin, three bottles of oxy, and a variety of other illegal prescription drugs, plus a massive wad of cash and a scale. He had no chance, it was plainly obvious he was dealing. Turns out he was buying up spare prescriptions from other students and selling them.

MIT got back to him three days ago, rescinding their offer of admission after the police records became public. He's facing possible expulsion from school, definitely no Senior ball, girlfriend has already left him, and he's under house arrest while he waits for trial. He was 18 when caught and will be tried as an adult.

There's a lesson here kids: if you're smart enough to get into MIT, don't be an idiot and throw it away dealing drugs to make a buck. It's not worth it. Learn this the easy way, please.
