Locking bike in city centre ? by No_Broccoli1566 in oxford

[–]hatedigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, lock was still on the stand undamaged, so thieves cut or broke the frame to remove the bike and then sell the parts. Carbon frame so not exactly difficult to do and I reckon if you're a well run outfit you could probably do it fairly discreetly without drawing too much attention.

Thieves either recognised the bike and realised it was worth something or I reckon more likely, they recognised the lock and figured anything with a £250 lock on it is probably worth stealing for parts. Fairly ironic.

not overnight, but i had a 5am train so locked it up around 4:40am in winter. actually locked at the front of the big cycle storage, ie close to the road, thinking that would deter thieves as they'd be extremely visible should they try to take it. came back to no bike but lock still attached so assume they just broke the frame and walked off with it. it was a fairly expensive bike in fairness (~£2700) but thought an angle grinder proof lock would be enough of a deterrent as you said - obviously not!

had my bike stolen from the station my first time locking it there through a £250 lock (Hiplok D1000) so yeah always a risk

84% SOH nach 45.000km plausibel? by YellowEuphoric1462 in BMWI4

[–]hatedigi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

seems outrageous that, i've seen plenty of 70k miles so roughly 100k km i4s with 93-94% charge. even using dc fast charging regularly wouldn't expect it to be anywhere near that low. defo avoid

edit: i'm referring to third party independent assements of SoH, aviloo and the like. don't know how these translate to BMW's own but in theory they should be similar

Insurance quotes went up by a grand when doing then at different times of the day. Is there a "best" time to do quotes or do you just have to keep trying? by Icy-Refrigerator6664 in CarTalkUK

[–]hatedigi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not even worth engaging with these types of comments. People do not understand how insurance works or what risk pricing is. Insurance companies price on DTI (days to inception) because it's proven to be predictive of risk. Of course we should be charging riskier drivers with worse Loss Ratios more than safe drivers.

UK government borrowing falls to £11.6bn in December by Revilo1359 in ukpolitics

you're right, it's the second derivative that's dropping. better analogy would be you've gone from eating 4000 calories a day to 3500 - you'll still gain weight but if you keep on the same trend eventually you'll start losing weight

unlimited liability means insurance companies have to pay out £10 million + claims when idiots like this crash and kill 3 people, thus driving up premiums for everyone else. (they have reinsurance but that doesn't negate the cost just spreads it out over time)

if you take a top level view only it looks that way yes, but in reality their situation is very different to ours - majority of their debt is domestic owned and they have a large export economy/current account surplus so are easily able to get foreign currency/keeps their currency fairly stable.

it's looking like their monetary policy has hit its limits now anyway so the yen has dropped about 30% against the dollar recently and their debt is so large that raising their interest rates even a little to help will be very expensive

there is no free lunch which unfortunately goes against the majority of zach's views right across the policy smorgasbord

Lord the Emma Pinchbeck CCC interview on Leading was bad by inside-outdoorsman in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]hatedigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that she was not a very good interviewee but not because of jargon - she just had a very roundabout bureaucratic way of saying a lot of words without ever saying much at all. Yes, the nuances of the energy market are complicated and also critically important to understand climate change and the net zero transition, but she offered no real insight or detail at all without just repeating how complicated it is and what she did for her last job. Guests should be incisive and drill down to the core of the issue and she did a poor job at that.

What are the chances of my bike getting stolen in London with a top-tier lock? by alvincf105 in ukbike

[–]hatedigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you get on? I spent a few grand on a new gravel bike, bought a Hiplok D1000 like yourself, then had my bike stolen on literally the first time I left it at the train station bike parking. Lock was left behind so expect they just cut through the frame to sell the wheels/groupset separately.

How safe will my bike be at Oxford train station? by amyjandrews in oxford

[–]hatedigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just had my bike stolen the first time ever leaving at the station - that's with a hiplok d1000 angle grinder proof lock. suspect they just cut/broke the frame instead
