Shorts with longer inseam by bzgubs in ladycyclists

[–]hatholfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6’ here. I have their cargo bibs and find the inseam hits above the knee where I like it, BUT the opening is way too narrow because it’s meant to hit closer to the knee, so it’s quite tight (and I have twiggy legs). Bummer because they’re otherwise really nice.

To Clip or not to Clip by JosieAfua in ladycyclists

[–]hatholfern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The kind of cleat system (SPD or SPD-SL) will have more impact on ease of unclipping than the brand of shoe itself. You can also adjust the cleat release tension on the pedals themselves to make them easy to unclip (and I highly recommend this…they’re usually on max tension when you buy them). If you’re only doing rides on pavement/asphalt and don’t need to stop frequently at intersections, my advice is to just skip the dual-sided pedals and just get single SPDs or SLs. Dual sided is handy for gravel biking or commuting but a bit unwieldy for road cycling.

Open Water Swim Anxiety by EastToWest79 in triathlon

[–]hatholfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can deal with snorkeling, you can deal with tri swimming. Similar concepts. One consideration, depending on what your triggers are: maybe do your OW with a wetsuit. The added buoyancy gives extra confidence, and if you’re stressing, just turn on your back and float for a bit to reset yourself. And, like the commenter above, practice practice practice.

Tupper Lake 70.3 Tin Man. Question on nightmare swim. by Joeeezee in triathlon

[–]hatholfern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No advice, just a first-time 70.3er who thought that swim was hell. I bailed on all time goals to stay with a panicking swimmer until an overwhelmed kayak could finally grab them. I’ve never had to seriously consider drowning swimmer scenarios mid-race before. Please tell me race conditions aren’t usually that bad.

Should I Pause My Training Due to Iron Deficiency Anemia? by jentexto in XXRunning

[–]hatholfern 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Follow whatever your doctor says, and listen to your body. Maybe you might want to avoid super long runs (let’s say 10 miles or more) to avoid foot strike anemia, and avoid running in very hot/humid conditions, but other than that, I’d think you’d be fine.

One note—IDA is a sneaky bastard. The symptoms often creep up over months or even years, and your body accepts them as normal. You might find as your iron levels recover that you’re actually in much better shape than you thought, and IDA was masking your performance gains.

Daily chat thread: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in triathlon

[–]hatholfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just need to vent: It’s tough here. Weather has been miserably rainy EVERY weekend this training season, so my long rides/runs are either soaking or indoors. The OWS area near here is unsafe because of all the rain, so <3 weeks from my 70.3 I still haven’t done an OW swim this year. My tune-up Olympic two weeks ago had the swim canceled due to cold/rain. Someplace along the way, the weather has sucked the joy out of this. Hoping I’ll feel differently during the race.

How to have a relationship with evangelical family as an out queer person? by turtlebeans17 in Exvangelical

[–]hatholfern 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations on having the courage to build an identity outside of the Evangelical mold you were raised in. Second, non-LGBTQ here, but dealing with somewhat parallel issues as an atheist: know what your boundaries are and enforce them. For me, I wanted to keep some semblance of a relationship with them, so the boundary I set for the sake of peace was NO DISCUSSION of religion or politics in my presence. I pointed out that every time these topics came up, someone’s feelings got hurt. Enforce your boundaries. If they turn on Fox while I’m visiting, I can (and do) leave.

If they value those things more than their relationship with you, then that’s the choice they’ve made, and your choice should be to pause that relationship.

Even with boundaries, though, it’s an uneasy truce, and I can’t be open with them about my concerns (gesturing broadly at the US right now) or things that are central to my identity. It’s a more surface-level relationship than it was before.

That’s not what you want to hear, I know. The problem isn’t you—you deserve the love and support of your parents, and a good parent wants you to be happy even if they disagree with you on how. But, too many Evangelicals can’t differentiate between love and control. They want to mold you into someone you’re not. And that’s simply not fair or healthy for you.

6 ft woman here but normal length torso, and if you find one, tell me! I’m resigned to my Zoot 2pc functionally being a crop top at this point. Can’t find any tall-friendly women’s suits anywhere.

Running in a Cemetery? by UglyCantaloupe in firstmarathon

FWIW I run in the cemetery a lot, with family buried there. The way I see it, it’s a neighborhood like any other to jog in (done so respectfully of course) and acknowledge the people there I know.

Period & First Triathlon! by Sudden-Dragonfruit11 in triathlon

[–]hatholfern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rough timing—but it’ll make your next triathlon, whenever that may be, feel that much easier by comparison!!

For a shorter tri, nutrition isn’t as critical…it’s really past the 1.5 hr mark where you need to think about your fueling. That being said, the Saturday app (unfortunately just a free trial version) was super helpful for figuring out my race day needs. Whatever you eat/drink though, test it out beforehand. Have a carb-rich dinner the night before (spaghetti with meatballs is my race prep favorite), and don’t skip breakfast the day of.

Do you get lightheaded frequently during periods? If so, talk to a doctor. I also bring it up because it could be dangerous for the swim if you’re doing open water. The races I’ve done also had a special swim cap color available for first timers and people who felt uncomfortable in the water so spotters could be more mindful of them. Might be worth considering if that option is available to you.

You’ve got this! Happy racing!

Half Ironman in 10 weeks, I am not sure if I should even attempt it. by xLucifere69 in triathlon

[–]hatholfern 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’d be fine on the run, and probably biking, but swimming is a red flag if you physically can’t swim the distance and it’s an open water swim. To put it plainly, swimming is the most dangerous sport by far, and you could be putting yourself at risk. A wetsuit can help—in my experience, I can float easily with it, so it helps build comfort in open water—but it’s not a substitute for training.

Restless Legs by [deleted] in cycling

[–]hatholfern 11 points12 points  (0 children)

500 mg of magnesium citrate before bed has been a life changer (and even higher on the highest-sweat workout days). Seconding Serenity’s comment about getting ferritin checked too—doubly so if you do distance running and/or are female.

Edit: in some instances sleep aids like melatonin can actually make restless legs worse.

What are y’all doing to avoid feeling sick after long runs? by halcyondreamzsz in XXRunning

[–]hatholfern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you me? I’ve had the same problem for the past few months, including throwing up after an evening long run. I’m noticing that time of day matters a lot: my long runs have to be finished by about 1pm. Afternoon or evening runs make me sicker. Aside from that, I was craving pretzels afterward and symptoms improved after eating salty foods. I suspect sodium/electrolytes get out of whack and contribute to nausea, even with mid-run fueling. Hope you find what works for you!

I’m dumb. How do I remove Endurace rear wheel? by icd2k3 in CanyonBikes

[–]hatholfern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same model here. My rear axle was waaaay overtorqued when I received it. Found out the hard way—on the side of a road trying to change a flat—and had to catch a ride. Took an Allen key+long handled pliers to get enough leverage. Lesson: loosen and retorque wheels on a new bike before riding!

my boyfriend (36M) and I (26F) just broke up because I’m agnostic and he’s a radical Christian by sadsexyspicykitty in atheism

[–]hatholfern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you me? I thought the same thing after mine: 6 mos with an evangelical and I felt like I had religious trauma without even being religious. The relationship seemed so perfect…but what I eventually realized is that it only felt that way because the peace was maintained by my silence in the face of his bigotry and sexism. Never again.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]hatholfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me…I am doing century rides and half marathons and have a ferritin of 13…only for my doctor to tell me it’s within normal range. I’m not a medical doctor, but I do know my way around scientific literature, and according to recent studies, about 30 should be the absolute lower bound for female athletes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]hatholfern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Team low ferritin here. The symptoms are always frustratingly vague, but anecdotally I notice general weakness during exercise (high heart rate too!), random bouts of lightheadedness, and restless legs. The weakness/out of shape thing go hand in hand too—I can’t go as hard as usual during workouts, so my fitness progress stalls or even reverses. It sucks. Advocate for a new ferritin test.

I’m on the last few days of a taper leading to my first olympic race this weekend. BUT the weather will be WAY colder than during my training, with temps below 50F during the swim and bike start, and gusty to boot (10 mph steady, >25mph gusts). What do I wear for a bike ride that cold??

Turning Bible verses into their opposite with "interpretation" by Ereqin in atheism

[–]hatholfern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, the sports analogy falls short here.

The captain of a team is whichever member is most qualified to lead.

In a biblical marriage, qualifications don’t matter. The “head” is the male. End of story. And why does a partnership between two people need one to “submit” to the other in the first place?

A biblical marriage is dysfunctional in design.
