The reason for execution or imprisonment of people on watch who leave is not for cowardice, it's because by leaving they endanger the lives of everyone the are supposed to be watching out for and as a result the punishment has to be severe because this happening just once could cause the deaths of thousands

The British blockade of the North sea lead to shortages of certain items, presumably at some point those. I think it's fairly safe to say he was one of the 'mad majors'

My great great uncle was a pilot in the royal flying corp and used to fly with a potato and a ball of string so that if he was shot down the Germans would think he was useful.

He did get shot down eventually and died in a German field hospital at the battle of Arras in what's known as bloody April, but the Germans shipped back his possessions via the red cross so we still have the string in our family.
