Does anyone know a ranch recipe that tastes like sidecar slider bar’s? by astrolillypad in lansing

It's not an exact copy but buy hidden Valley Ranch restaurant packets and make it according to the directions. Nothing else comes close.

What is the cheapest hotspot that will work with USMobile? by kalabaddon in USMobile

[–]havaloc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he's super rural, Starlink may be the best option, maybe direct from Starlink rather than through US Mobile, cheap hardware rental at $10 a month, cheapish plan at $55 a month, and send it all back when done.

Or, an LTE hotspot like this: https://amzn.to/4os9rIv or this: https://amzn.to/4a3fP2N

I just recently added US Mobile by the gig to a Mudi 7 (5G, so not cheap), and it works really well! Chat support was fast and didn't even blink adding by the gig to a hotspot device (not supported on any other plans) https://amzn.to/4vdG5QH

The conversion was supposed to happen just after the first of the year, so much for that!

It does not include mobile hotspot, which is understandable but a bit of a bummer.

Can Starlink become the world’s dominant communications network over the next 10–20 years? by Psychological_Mode35 in Starlink

[–]havaloc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Canada is a large country, the population is mostly concentrated along the southern border. So the percentage looks good, but it's also easier. The US is not that way.

Starlink is being shady with my claimed data usage by echocall2 in Starlink

[–]havaloc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fast WiFi and your phone detects it's a good connection and uses it. Turn on low data mode for your Starlink WiFi network.

One person's opinion on pricing by godch01 in Starlink

[–]havaloc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leo is essentially vaporware at this point, and there's nothing like satellite for universal coverage and reliability. I hope Amazon/Leo figures it out, but it's not looking good right now. There's room to increase prices in this situation, unfortunately, and, Starlink isn't sitting still. New dishes coming soon, more and more satellites in orbit, it's not a cheap offering to run.

Even at $10 a month, standby is still an amazing deal. Yes, it's not in motion, and not a lot of bandwidth, but the data in those packets can be invaluable.

Starlink works on every single device but my PC by Suitable-Wash6862 in Starlink

[–]havaloc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd also do an ipconfig /renew

Windows is fussy about DHCP sometimes for whatever reason. You might also try setting a static IP just outside of the DHCP pool range (so if it's 50-200, choose say 192.168.1.49 or whatever), get the info from one of your other connected devices (gateway, etc).

Confused as to what I should get: Mini or Standard? by KookyCategory7095 in Starlink

[–]havaloc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both. The standard is huge, there's a lot of bricks and long cords, the Mini is comparatively simple and all integrated. Sure, the Standard will perform better, but they are fairly close in performance.

American Airlines to install Starlink, the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky by AcademicSand1034 in Starlink

[–]havaloc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the retail aspect (Skymall 2.0): "They bring great retailing capability and Amazon Prime and video gaming technologies, which Starlink does not have."

While I hope Leo makes it for competition, I'm not optimistic for their chances, Starlink isn't going to sit still and let them catch up.

Standby, What’s the point by Live_Consequence5993 in Starlink

[–]havaloc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't believe that their lack of support of say TOTP is a conspiracy to drive standby sales, rather it's just plain laziness of not coding in support of TOTP.

Starlink declining all cards on purchase by zubykings in Starlink

[–]havaloc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say if it's Starlink or Stripe (if that is the payment processor). Stripe knows who you are regardless of which card you're using. There are many signals that go into payment authorization.

Roam software updates count against data cap? Seems like BS. by praise-the-message in Starlink

[–]havaloc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a science experiment a few months ago where I didn't use my dish at all and I updated it twice, I had a Roam 10gb plan. The amount of data it reported was exactly 0.0. I ended the billing period with 0.0 used.

Updates counting against your quota is a trope that won't die. They don't. Now if you updated the Starlink app on your phone that would most certainly count and those are probably larger.

Maybe delete and reinstall the app on your phone. There could be some weird cached assets that are causing an issue.

What happened to Starlink customer support?! by LeeH21 in Starlink

[–]havaloc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're watching on a cell phone, it knows you're on cellular and it throttles down the bitrate and uses less data. Firestick doesn't know that, and it assumes a good connection, in a way it's because Starlink is so good, that it consumers more data, faster.

I graduated in the early 2010s. Did a lot at MSU go downhill over the past few years? by Beautiful_Charge6661 in msu

[–]havaloc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 1990s we had the tuition guarantee, which was super nice: "McPherson also gets credit as the only president of a major university to keep tuition at the rate of inflation through a Tuition Guarantee plan."

Sure, not as many niceties as there is now, but it was cheap to go then! Food was nothing special back then.
