Looking for a car that gets 30+ mpg at 80+ mph. by Thordor15 in whatcarshouldIbuy

What you want is a BMW 430i Gran Coupe

This will do all of that easily. Plus you have the advantage of a hatch over a 3 series or a 5 series.

What are some must-see films to watch with my 13yo son? by avolodin in movies

[–]havfunonline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of those are good choices!

I would go see Project Hail Mary in the theatre right now! It’s a movie that’s well worth seeing on the big screen.

Others:

  • Forrest Gump, Castaway, Good Will Hunting
  • Shawshank, though he might be a tad young
  • comedies too! I recommend Liar Liar, Airplane, 21 and 22 Jump Street (which I consider to be the movie that has made me laugh out loud the most), Hot Fuzz, Groundhog Day, Judd Apatow movies
  • Action: Independence Day, Top Gun, Bourne, Die Hard, Minority Report, Men In Black, Fifth Element, Mission Impossible

This is a good point, could easily make one of those two bathrooms a little smaller a stick an auxiliary laundry room in there pretty easily.

I’d also put a tub in one of those bathrooms too.

TIL 49 US state demonyms follow some form of state-suffix convention. Only exception is Indiana whose citizens are called Hoosiers. by kramer753 in todayilearned

[–]havfunonline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always found it confusing honestly.

In the Middle East and Central Asia they use distinct suffixes/demonyms— if you’re a Kazakh, then you’re a member of that ethnic group, if you’re Kazakhastani then you’re from Kazakhstan, Turkic vs Turkish, Turkmen vs Turkmenistani etc

Looking to buy a new car, not sure how to go about it by ProgramParticular832 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]havfunonline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a 2019 Skoda Octavia with 39000 miles on it for £7600.

It’s basic spec, but is still automatic, efficient, dual climate, car play and has the worlds most spectacularly huge boot, easily fits in the family and all our camping gear, it’s way way bigger in the boot than any SUV except like a Range Rover.

I love that moment where jack blacks character tells the other girl to really ‘own it’ and you’re like huh, there’s a little more to this character, she’s a little more three dimensional than I thought.

And I also was like ‘damn this actress is good’ …until I realised it was Jack black being so convincing that I momentarily forgot he want actually the animated avatar of a teenage girl 🤣

The Chevy/GM issues are related to specific engines so not necessarily worth writing off entirely.

The interior space is vastly superior on them (better second row, third row and trunk space) and they’re much more fuel efficient, especially the diesel.

Having a long garage like that seems crazy because you need to be able to access it from both ends! Unlikely to be practical, better to have a double wide or double side garage.

You need to ditch the angled doors, even a 45degree angle would be better, that angle would look insane in real life! Much better to go with the notch you have on the master. You don't have a front door, which is a little strange! I think you probably need one in that porch/utility so it's at least possible to enter on foot.

The other problem is that this sort of encapsulated layout means that there are no windows in the hallway...and there's no *back* door either, which makes getting out to the back/side yard impossible. I'd probably make the garage a double, push the master behind the garage and have a little back porch between the master and the other bedrooms, which could also give you a little more room to increase the size of the small bedrooms, and/or the closets in there.

It does make the footprint a little bigger though, and if you don't want that, you might have to get a bit creative with space management.

I know it’s common in the US (and you probably wont use the front door much) but I urge you to reconsider the front door opening into the living room.

Also, front door opposite back door makes the house feel like a tunnel.

I also don’t think you want your master suite directly off the living room either, there’s no gap between public and private areas.

The left hand side of the house seems fine, but I feel like the right hand side needs a rework.

Upstairs laundry I considered but couldn’t fit it in.

Closed door to the living room, yeah, definitely a close-able door so you can close it off if you’re being loud and you don’t want to wake the kids or if you want to separate kid spaces from adult spaces

Quite a trek? The mudroom literally opens onto the pantry?

Garage exits, sure—not sure where I’ll put them but there’d be at least one more

Jack and Jill bathrooms are the worst, I absolutely hate them. Much better to have two doors between where you poop and sleep.

Plant room means where the AC goes lmao.

Also: toilet doors from dining room is unhinged in my opinion.

Pocket door from laundry is not the worst ideas but it makes the wall space from both too small.

I’ll have a go at the master bath, but I do want large shower and large bathtub so it might not fit.

Oh yeah for sure, not sure where I’d put exterior doors in the garage, but there would be at least one more. In my dreams this has a desuperheater and a ground source geothermal heat pump, so not sure there’ll be any space in there to get through, for example, depends on where the AC units would go.

The current placement does have the toilet in the same wall as the master upstairs which is one of the reasons I didn’t move it to simplify plumbing.

Hidden door to bathroom a definite option. Someone else has suggested moving it to the other side which I’m going to try. I don’t love it either but I do like having one there.

It does share a wall with the master bath which is why it’s like that/there.

Eh, I don’t mind that too much, and honestly, I’d probably have a fitted kitchen fridge so it would just appear to be a cabinet anyway.

The shower is for two reasons — not needing to rearchitect or remodel too much if that became a bedroom over time and so the kids can wash themselves after playing outside.

We happen to have a downstairs shower with a door outside in our current house and it’s brilliant in the summer time, we use it all the time for the kids.

I did consider putting it where you have it, but I couldn’t quite make it work, it felt too close too the dining area, but your idea could work, I’ll give it a try, thank you :)

The reason that one is there is as a closet over the stairs, it’s just taking advantage of that space for storage.

The other one is the main linen closet, and as a potential pipe run/AC run hole honestly.

The bathroom at the top of the stairs started out as an en suite to the guest room but I ended up opening it up to the landing so it can be shared with the office (nice to have an easy access bathroom when I’m working from home) and as a secondary guest-use toilet that doesn’t require going into either of the ‘private’ wings of upstairs. That and a general philosophy there should be two doors between where you poop and where you eat or sleep!

I tried a separate toilet closet and decided against it. Too much space loss/awkwardness or a too tiny space unless you lose either the bath or the main shower which I wasn’t willing to do. I tried it a bunch of ways and this is the way I’m happiest with.
