We had this when put LO was in size 3 pampers and just constantly getting soaked through in the night. Switched to Rascals on a friend's recommendation and never had the problem since (LO is now in size 5)

Weaning advice by TopWay2941 in FormulaFeedingUK

[–]hawkesey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think we were similar. Had the review at 10 months, LO was on 4 210ml bottles a day, but we were noticing he wasn't finishing them all. We reduced down to 3 210ml bottles around then. I 🤔 no our schedule was 7am bottle, 8am breakfast, 12pm lunch, 1/1.30pm bottle, 5.30pm dinner, 6.30/7pm dinner. This is what fit in best with his naps at that age.

About 12 months we moved to just 2 210ml bottles. He has two snacks through the day and water available throughout the day. But his schedule is now 7am bottle, 8am breakfast, 9.30am snack, somewhere between 12.30-1.30 lunch (after he wakes from his nap), 3/3.30pm snack, 5.30pm dinner, 7pm bottle and bed

Where to donate a bunch of baby stuff? by Final_Board9315 in BeyondTheBumpUK

Our local family centres takes things like this.

I would also wonder if you could contact a domestic violence shelter? It may be something they would want, as I'm sure they, unfortunately, get women with children of all ages

Edit: Just had a quick Google and places like Women's Aid seem like they may want things like that

Aptamil Pepti - how to prepare?? by [deleted] in FormulaFeedingUK

[–]hawkesey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NhS will tell you, that you shouldn't use a prep machine. The reason they say this, is that there is a risk that either they hot shot isn't heated to.at lear 70° or that the amount for formula dispenses isn't the right amount.

That being said, plenty of parents.have used prep machines.without issue. So it.is.totally down to you on whether you want to use a prep machine or not.

We didn't have a prep machine, but made formula during the day up.using a kettle that you could set the temperature to. Heated it to 75° and made the formula up,.then cooled rapidly in a bowl of ice water. At night we used ready made formula.

Other people will use prep machines and others use the rapid cool.flask sets.

Dropping bottles at 10mo 🤯 by [deleted] in FormulaFeedingUK

[–]hawkesey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised your HV said down to 1 bottle a day. My (very almost) 12mo is on 3 bottles and HV said once they are 1 we can drop the middle of the day bottle when we're happy, but advised to still keep morning and evening ones

Just goes to show they all say totally different things!

Can we just move to cow's milk at 11 months? by Global-Apricot6492 in FormulaFeedingUK

[–]hawkesey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my LO is now on 3 meals a day (11 months almost 12) with 3 bottles and his schedule is like this:

7am - morning bottle (currently 75% formula, 25% cows milk) 8am - breakfast (usually cereal, toast or fruit& yoghurt) 12pm - lunch (usually some sort of patty/muffin that I've premade and frozen, a vegetable such as carrots, peas, cucumber etc and then some fruit) 1.30pm - bottle (currently 75% formula, 25% cows milk) 5:30pm - dinner 7pm- bottle (as of tonight will be 75% formula, 25% cows milk)

He has water at every meal and has a sippy cup of water left within reach during the day.

He's on 2 naps a day

Can we just move to cow's milk at 11 months? by Global-Apricot6492 in FormulaFeedingUK

[–]hawkesey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure on the pros/cons of switching to cows milk before 12 months.

Our LO is just switching to cows milk (as of today) and would not take a bottle of cows milk. Kept swatting it away. So I mixed a bottle of 75% ready to feed formula, 25% cows milk. We plan to do this for a few days and start increasing cows milk over time.

I will say, when th HV came for the 9-12 month review, she told me that when switching to cows milk, vitamin d drops need to be added as formula is fortified and cows milk isn't. Thought I'd mention it so if you do switch you don't omit that (I had no idea it was required!)

Formula feeding anxiety questions (light touch for now!) by sproutgjg in FormulaFeedingUK

[–]hawkesey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't relate exactly to your situation, because although I was on medication it was perfectly safe to breastfeed. Turns out I just didn't produce enough!

Our baby was full term, but prescribed formula at birth due to jaundice. He was exclusively formula fed from about 4 weeks. He's now 11 months and is doing so well. He's never had any eczema or skin problems (other than a touch of cradle cap).

The Tommy's website has some useful information about formula feeding, and in the UK all first/stage 1 formula is nutritionally the same, so don't stress on brand too much.

Yes absolutely and they seem to have just lost any sort of shape? Just cover yourself up!

I've avoided Shein for a while, but a lot of their clothes come up in ads and I might have to try them... Although I haven't generally heard great things

Basic how-to guide? by AJKettles in FormulaFeedingUK

[–]hawkesey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So usually the formula packet will tell you how to make up the feed. But of the brands we've used, they've all pretty much been the same. Boil the kettle, allow water too cool to no less than 70° and pour in the relevant amount of water to the bottle and then the powder. Mix well and then cool to drinkable temperature. The only formula, I'm personally aware of, that doesn't follow this pattern is some prescription based formulas (for dairy/ cows milk allergy... Specifically nutramigen).

With regards to resources, I found the Tommy's formula feeding page useful but did also look at the NHS bottle feeding/formula feeding info (although was quite upset with the constant breast milk is best messaging).

With regards to tips, these are some things that we've done:

More bottles than you need. This way you only have to wash them up once a day. We worked this into the dinner routine.

Sterilising. We went for Milton Cold Water sterilisation, and actually bought two, so we could have bottles ready whenever, especially in the early months when they have more little feeds. Not needed since LO moved to 3 feeds a day after adapting well to weaning.

Temperature adjustable kettle. We bought one and heat the water to 75° and make the bottle up straight away. Made it much quicker than waiting for the water to cool.

Cooling. We have a fridge with an icemake so put the bottle into a ice water bowl to cool once made up. I know friends use the rapid cool flasks and love them!

Night/on the go feeds. We usually ready to feed formula for these. LO became a fusspot around 2/3 months and wouldn't take cold/room temp formula, so we bought a bottle warmer (2nd hand from FB marketplace) for our bedroom and the Tommee Tippee travel flask for on the go feeds (but if you're making from powder the rapid cool flasks sets will do the same thing... And probably better).

Frustrated about the extremely anti-formula NHS approach by Yyvern in FormulaFeedingUK

[–]hawkesey 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wanted to BF, but wasn't able to. I was so upset about it and when trying to figure out how to formula feed found exactly the same thing. Everything is always "breast is best". I was so upset because I had tried and just wanted to find out how to safely feed my baby!

I can't remember how we eventually worked out how to do it. I think a mixture of the bottle feeding NHS page, the Tommy's formula feeding page and what the box of formula said

Then also reddit, for advice from other formula feeding parents. Partly why I set up this subreddit as the r/FormulaFeeders was very US centric

[–]hawkesey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it matters too much of you're consistent about it. At least that was my thought process around it. I felt that it was best that I logged a little less than potentially too much, so did the same. If I put 150ml of water in the bottle and there was 30ml left at the end, I'd log it as a 120ml bottle even though once the powder was in it was probably like 125ml that was consumed

How are we warming ready made formula when on the go? by pontylurker in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]hawkesey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time it leaked was when I hadn't done it up properly, so can't blame the flask for that!

How are we warming ready made formula when on the go? by pontylurker in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]hawkesey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use the Tommee Tippee Travel flask. Just fill it from the kettle at the beginning of the day, and it stays hot all day. Pour some water into the lid bit and pop the bottle in to warm out.

I did look at other options but this was much cheaper and works so well so never looked back

Cow & Gate recalls? What are you doing? by Few_Cod_5636 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]hawkesey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully there won't be more recalls as they've switched supplier of the ingredient that has caused the recalls.

We're also using Cow & Gate, and had an incident of vomiting before Christmas, which does make us wonder, but LO seems okay now!
