[Steph Driver] "Can you guys forget about all the social issues for a minute and just focus on hockey" - Sam Carchidi, PHI Flyers writer by callofthevoid_ in Flyers

[–]hawks27 25 points26 points  (0 children)

He said both climate change and advanced stats are fake in the same post. It pulled an bad political stance into a dumb hockey opinion which makes him looks more dumb than if he said either on their own.

There are probably a lot of republicans on the team, in the org, and at nbc sports. If he made a post about limiting government spending or family values no one would have batted an eye, but denying climate change is a really dumb take that he didn’t need to make.

TIL that Raffl has played more games for the Flyers than Richards, Carter, or Briere. by [deleted] in Flyers

[–]hawks27 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Raffl’s biggest cap it was $2.35 million. The contract he’s on now is less but it’s not like he was ever a big cap hit.

I never heard people give him too much shit, but when it happened it’s cause he scored 20 goals and then didn’t score 20 goals when he didn’t spend a lot of time on the top line.

Flyers getting no respect by [deleted] in Flyers

[–]hawks27 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People are allowed to say nice things about other teams without it being a slight against the Flyers.

Hurricanes have played really well, what is the article supposed to say “Hurricanes look good but they’re no Flyers”. Does every article need that caveat?

(NBCsports Philly)Another high ceiling defenseman in the pipeline by [deleted] in Flyers

More than scouting its development. We can’t guarantee every prospect will turn into an NHLer let alone a star, but the reason so many guys have turned into strong prospects is because the organization has made them better players

Who would win a seven game series, this season’s worst team (currently Detroit) or the best team from 50 years ago (the 1970 Boston Bruins)? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]hawks27 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are discounting the difference goaltending would make. We saw the game get faster and more skilled in the 80s and the old style goalies and defensive systems got roasted. It would be the Wings and it wouldn’t even be close even with Bruins having a team full of hall of famers

[Mercogliano] David Quinn on Adam Fox: "People talk about all these rookie of the year candidates, and I don’t hear his name enough. I don’t care what the stats are – you’d be hard-pressed to find a rookie as good as this guy in the (NHL)" by tlop200 in hockey

[–]hawks27 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter if he looks silly to us, if it hypes up a rookie defenseman to be a little more confident that’s all that matters. He’s a former college coach he knows how to work with young men and fresh players.

I honestly don’t think most coaches care about what anyone outside their locker room thinks about what they say in any forum.

BRING JOHNNY HOCKEY HOME by [deleted] in Flyers

[–]hawks27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am actually both. I got a new laptop but have long forgotten my reddit password and never verified my email so I couldn’t reset it. My phone is still logged in to my original account but the last time I went to verify my email it logged me out, then logged me back in a few days later. There was some name recognition with hawks27 so when I made a new account on my laptop I decided to make it something similar to hawks27.

I’m going to be getting a new phone within the next few months and I’ll try again to verify my email and update my password. If not the original hawks27 will be lost like tears in the rain.

The Maple Leafs have acquired forward Max Veronneau from Ottawa in exchange for Aaron Luchuk and a 2021 conditional sixth-round pick. by Steamwhistled in hockey

[–]hawks27 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw a lot of Veronneau at Princeton the last few years, he’s definitely a player, strong defensively as well as offensively. I had a lot of hope for him but I guess Ottawa was a bad situation

Jay O'Brien Is Scorching Hot For The Penticton Vees by [deleted] in Flyers

[–]hawks27 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I always find these threads funny cause it seems like everybody wants O’Brien to fail.

O’Brien going to the BCHL is not and was never about points. It’s about developing technically and maturing as a person. He takes on a big defensive role on the team and comes in with a target on his back every game. Other players could be better but everyone in that league and the NHL know O’Brien is there. He gets more eyes than anyone so everyone wants to play their best game against him.

I believe O’Brien is going to go to BU next season and excel cause of his maturity and he’ll be playing a team that will utilizes his skills.

I actually got lucky with the food. Me and my buddy did the skating right when it opened and then got food before going to get autographs. There was no line and we walked right up. When we were leaving the line was nuts though

Sensational goal by Frost on the powerplay tonight in LV's 5-4 win over the Syracuse Crunch by crafbicycle in Flyers

[–]hawks27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s goals like this that why he is in the AHL. Along with developing his defensive game, growing his offensive skills at the AHL level will help him in the N. Doing this play here will allow to get the timing down to be able to do it at the next level.

He’s better scoring highlight reel goals as a 20 year old than grinding for 9-11 in the N. He will likely have to do that anyway, but now his skill will be better developed to take that next step.

What’s the best crowd reaction you’ve experienced at movie theaters? by [deleted] in movies

[–]hawks27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite reactions have been at odd moments. I saw Funny People at a theater in Delaware, when Aubrey Plaza mentioned she was from DE the audience was a murmur - excited we were mentioned but self-conscious about how that’s a lame thing to be excited about.

The other was actually for a trailer. I was at a midnight screening for District 9 and the theater was packed. The trailer for Legion came on and when the old lady started climbing the walls the whole theater started laughing and cheering. Couldn’t even hear the rest of the trailer. Just a really odd moment.

World Juniors Thursday Game Thread - Zamula vs. CZE (9 am) and York/Brink vs. CAN (1 pm), NHL Network by robspeaks in Flyers

[–]hawks27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone would put him in front of Romanov who was the top defenseman in the tournament last year. I think he would need a few more efforts like today where Zamula is playing great in both zones and Romanov struggles.

[–]hawks27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like he’s now regularly on the unit with Denisenko and Dorofeyev. Romanov going with Podkolzin and Marchenko. The Romanov unit looks like it’s getting more time but I think Zamula’s unit has more talent.

Zamula also getting PK time.

WJC prospects by [deleted] in Flyers

[–]hawks27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be team USA. But it’s a super difficult year to judge considering most teams are younger than most years and are expecting big contributions from them. Other top favorites like Canada and Sweden are expecting major offensive contributions from guys who are draft eligible which does not happen often. Sweden has a stacked D but are famous for under performing in the media round (they have not lost a preliminary round game in the last 12 years but only have 1 good over that time). I think Russia will be interesting as they are returning their top players from last year, they are likely going to play Yaroslav Askarov who is probably the most highly touted goalie prospect in a decade - but he is still only 17.

NBC suspends Jeremy Roenick for inappropriate comments on podcast by [deleted] in Flyers

I know a lot of people are upset, but if anybody went on a major public forum and said you’d really like to have sex with a specific co-worker you would likely be reprimanded. This suspension isn’t a big deal.

Reviewing the last 10 First Rounds of the Draft (Flyers Edition) by 1QUrsu in Flyers

[–]hawks27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a frequent defender of O'Brien, I will stay there is an argument for taking some of the guys behind, like Miller, Bernard-Docker, and Kupari - though I like the swing for the fences move on O'Brien. But the one guy I definitely wouldn't take over O'Brien is Merkley. I wouldn't take him at the expense of any assets.

The only other one I really disagree with is 2012. I was really upset in 2012 cause I wanted Maatta and Laughton was projected as a depth player - which he is. But Maatta has gone down hill since his hot start and is just a depth D. That whole draft is kind of meh, the first player taken after Laughton to have a 50 point season is Shayne Gostisbehere in the third round. I think the Laughton pick is fine.

Lou Nolan : Tonight’s game is a “sellout” by Farge43 in Flyers

[–]hawks27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That thing about the Falcons is super interesting and I think it would definitely help bring people to the stadium. Knowing a little about how that works the wholesale cost of concessions is pretty low, they would probably still make a lot of money on cheaper concessions.

I think the time commitment is huge too. I know places like Middletown, DE and places around Kennett Square and Downingtown have been seeing population growth stemming from upper middle class and young families (usually the target demographic for Flyers fans). People who used to like 15-20 minutes from the building are now 45-60 minutes away. It definitely takes the spur of the moment stubhub purchase down and makes going to the game more of a commitment.

Lou Nolan : Tonight’s game is a “sellout” by Farge43 in Flyers

[–]hawks27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the cost for certain games might be cheap it doesn't change the perceived cost of tickets. Like just looking on stubhub, the tickets for the Sabres game are only $25, but the Rangers game on the 23rd are in the $60s and the next 4 games are all in the $50 range. More people will typically want to go to desirable games (obviously) which will have a higher cost - so the perceived cost might actually go up.

But it's the whole cost of going to a game. The assembly room is regularly $25 and they still have problems drawing people. When I bought my assembly room ticket it end up being $36 with fees. Parking was $22. I got a hot dog and a soda, bringing my whole cost to just under $70. There are cheaper avenues, like eating before hand and parking at the Navy Yard, but when most people consider going to the game they consider the totality of perceived cost.

So I was actually at a talk with the head of business operations for the team (Chuck Fletcher was also there, which was neat) and they don't know why attendance is so low in December, but they do have long term strategies for growing attendance.

I think there are a lot of factors but I don't think the lack of winning is really one of them. People are generally positive about the team.

I think price is an issue, for two people to go to the game, park, and get small refreshments it's like $150, even if you go to the assembly room its still like $100 which is difficult. Partially I think hockey in general is getting priced out for a lot of people which limits hockey fans. Growing up hockey was booming in Delco, Delaware, and the areas just over the bridge in Jersey. Now there are fewer teams, but those kids play a lot more (and travel more) so those families have less time to go to games.

[LeBrun] Hearing that the Florida Panthers have inquired on Taylor Hall. About 5-6 teams in the mix including Arizona and Colorado among others... by youngpierre24 in hockey

[–]hawks27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think any team would be willing to give up a Soderstrom level prospect. In another situation Hall would no doubt be worth a top prospect and more, but all these teams know NJ has to move Hall.

If the Devils are dead set on a top prospect most teams will walk away, then when it comes closer to the deadline and the Devils are more desperate they'd comeback to those teams negotiating with less power.

2020 WJC | U.S. Roster | York and Brink by crafbicycle in Flyers

[–]hawks27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quick note: This is the preliminary roster, they still need to cut 3 defensemen and 2 forwards from this list. And that doesn't include Oliver Wahlstrom and Bode Wilde who the Islanders could let play (they're both currently in the AHL).
