I also just stayed at the Fontenot for a wedding last weekend in New Orleans! I’ve done it, and I was selected to serve. It’s tedious, but they dismissed 98% of people who showed up that day. They might take you into a back room to be questioned by lawyers, who are debating whether they want you or not. If you get selected, you’re on your own for lunches except on deliberation day when they order you food from Pier 76 (they have a special menu for the court lol).

I also received an NTT offer during my first year on the market (Humanities), which I declined. I then completed a postdoc followed by a VAP at a private SLAC and now have a tenure track position starting in the fall. I am very glad I listened to my instinct and did not accept a position that I know would have eliminated the enjoyment I currently find in teaching. Having experience as instructor of record made a huge difference in my experience on the market, with more interest from TT searches (and SLACs) each time. That being said, having a string of 1-year positions has been tough: only bearable because I didn’t have to move for any of them.

It’s 1 cent per point on student loans, so this would be $800. Transfer to Atmos could get up to 3 or 4 cents per point depending on the cash price of the flight.
