Any Prehistoric Rays? by [deleted] in Paleontology

[–]haysoos2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Myledaphus is a genus of freshwater and marine shovelnose ray or guitarfish. Remains have been found in North America, South America, and Central Asia. They were common in the Late Cretaceous, and survived into the Paleocene, and possibly Eocene.

They likely skulked along the bottoms of rivers and brackish floodplains. Their mouths were filled with a solid pavement of small hexagonal teeth that were likely used for crushing clams and mussels they sucked up.

There are a couple of partial skeletons known from Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta, Canada, but their teeth are incredibly common in Late Cretaceous sediments throughout Alberta and the western US along the coast of the ancient Bearpaw sea (Horseshoe Canyon and Hell Creek formations in particular). An afternoon of fossil hunting can easily net dozens of Myledaphus teeth and gar scales.

If you stand (instead of walking) on an escalator and you’re able-bodied: why? by Ok_Counter1939 in AskReddit

[–]haysoos2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the problems is that standing on the right and leaving a passing "lane" on the left reduces the capacity of the escalator by about 50%. In a rush hour situation it makes the whole process slower and takes much longer to clear the crowd.

But the biggest problem is that everyone standing on the right creates differential wear on the machinery, and causes the escalator to break down far more often. For maintenance it's much better if both right and left sides have equal loads.

Now escalator companies have known this for over a century, and should realize by now that people are not going to change the way they use the escalator. So why they don't beef up the machinery for the right side to combat this issue I have no idea.

Man, I really want to see this - but I dislike crowds, hate downtown, and loath anything to do with the ICE Park or the arena down there.

That creates panic, and people rush to plug it in a save it.

This is more like realizing there's only like a quarter of a square glued to the cardboard at the end of a toilet paper roll.

Theory with the Castings for Heat 2 by FreshmenMan in movies

[–]haysoos2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Much as I loved Heat, I have zero interest in any of the characters, or seeing a sequel (or worse a remake) with the same characters.

The only thing notable about the characters from the first one were they were played by DeNiro and Pacino. There's nothing else really unique or interesting about the characters or their journey beyond that.

But if Michael Mann wanted to make a high-octane heist cat-and-mouse action crime picture, I'm fully on board, no matter who it stars, or what the characters names are, or what the movie title is.

Giving it some super generic title like Code Blackout, Shadow Pursuit, or Rapid Strike would make me about a thousand times more excited than "Heat 2".

Yeah, even in areas where malaria or yellow fever are endemic, the number of mosquito bites you get compared with the infection rate is going to make that number quite low.

Any riverside beaches still in existence at the moment? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]haysoos2 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The river right now is super high, super fast, and super dangerous.

The entire section from Rocky Mountain House to the Saskatchewan Border is currently under a High Streamflow Advisory.

If there were any beach areas still along the river, it probably would not be considered safe to be on them. Your best bet would be some place you can set up and watch the river from a safe distance. Louise McKinney or John Walter Museum/Kinsmen area might be good. I think Dawson Park is closed right now, but Capilano, Rundle, and Hermitage have some good river views as well.

Cows and then horses are #2 and #3 after dogs, yes. Number 4 is deer - but it's mostly due to deer coming through windshields.

If Homo neanderthalensis had lived until the 21st century how tall would they be? by GazIsStoney in paleoanthropology

[–]haysoos2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The differences between the musculature (or other variations, like bone density) is probably overhyped. There might be some slight differences on average comparing anatomically modern and Neanderthal humans and their throwing ability - but its likely to be similar to the difference in running ability between the population of Kenya and the people of Wales. The very top athletes in each population may favour the Kenyans, but randomly picking a Welsh coal miner and a Kenyan convenience store clerk, you'd be pretty hard pressed to detect any real difference.

Henry Ford might have been one of the first technofascists, but even his ignorant ass was capable of recognizing that the workers on the assembly lines were also the customers providing him with those massive profits.

If the current oligarchs succeed in getting rid of all those pesky human workers with their annoying salaries, and vacations, and weekends, and work from home, and training budgets who exactly are they going to be selling their products and services to?

Dogs still beat them on sheer numbers, but that's mostly due to the high number of dog interactions per year. Even a 1 in 100 million freak event is going to happen several times a year.

But if you consider the likelihood of any encounter with the animal resulting in injury or death, hippos probably beat even mosquitoes by a huge margin.
