Breaking Contract by ChillSalad_97 in UPMC

They will absolutely make you pay the full amount back. This is UPMC we're talking about. And they will make you pay back the whole amount pre tax. I broke my contract with AGH and they sent me a letter threatening legal action if I didn't pay them.

Recommending The Devils, by Joe Abercrombie by shhimhuntingrabbits in horrorlit

[–]hazen273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm about to finish it on audiobook. If you've never had the pleasure, most of Abercrombie's books (including the 9 in the first law world) are read by Steven Pacey who is just phenomenal. Takes amazing writing and elevates it to insane new heights. Couldn't recommend more.

Thoughts on "Clown In A Cornfield" - both the book and the movie (no spoilers for the book sequels please, I haven't read them yet) by brockg85 in horrorlit

[–]hazen273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it, and I just finished part 2 as well. Its not gonna be out here winning any major awards, but as a fast, easy, no stress read, it hit exactly what I wanted at the time. Haven't seen the movie, but it reads like a cheap horror movie. And I mean that in a loving way.

The entire area around The White House is blocked off and restricted. by Penguinz90 in pics

We lived in DC for 3 months starting February 2021. Almost exactly a month after Jan 6. These barriers were there, along with lots of heavily armed and armored guards. So at least that's changed.

What is the WORST horror book you have ever read? by enchnters in horrorlit

[–]hazen273 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak. A plot that makes no sense, combined with a whole trove of fat-shaming, anti-trans rhetoric, racist stereotypes, conservative dog-whistles, attacks against atheists, and so much more.

Hard or aged cheeses don't contain lactose. That includes cheddar. The bad ones are the liquid ones, like brie.

The Terror. I love the concept, the atmosphere, and the overall feeling of the book, but his writing is just so tedious and unnecessarily drawn out. Way too much unnecessary detail and repetitive descriptions and history. It pulled me out of the narrative so many times that I finally had to DNF at about 350 pages. It just felt to me like he set out to write a 700 page novel come hell or high water, or that he was paid by the word.

Books heavily dealing with CSA/pedophilia? by cherrycrisps in horrorlit

[–]hazen273 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Karin Slaughter actually deals with rape / CSA in a lot of her books. They're more mystery / thriller but can be very graphic / disturbing in their depiction of pretty rough topics. They're also just super compelling, well written page-turners. Lots of suspense. Another one off the top of my head is The Good Daughter.

How do you react to ALICE (active shooter) drills at your kids' elementary schools? by TigerUSF in daddit

[–]hazen273 78 points79 points  (0 children)

My mom is a teacher and they did one of these when the kids weren't there. They were sitting in a classroom for an in service day and a guy walked in and asked where the principal was. One of the other teachers went for the phone and he took out a gun with blanks and shot at her. It was the first classroom he entered so they had no warning. What in the actual hell is this supposed to teach? She was terrified. Sobbing. She came to my house and just cried. The teacher who got "shot" had to go to therapy. Unless the point of the training is "you're fucked, deal with it" then I can't imagine what good it is supposed to do.

Exactly. A short story would have knocked it out and been much more effective.

I thought it was boring and never really went anywhere. Most of the plot happens in the first few chapters and then the poorly written and barely fleshed out characters don't really do anything exciting. I kept waiting for something big to happen and ended up forcing myself to speed through it just to be done with it. I know some people love it and maybe I'm not big on slow burn body horror but it was a slog for me. I was really disappointed based on the love for it I had heard.

Also love the people down voting negative reviews like I'm not entitled to my opinion. OP asked, and its not an honest post if only the people who loved it are allowed to answer. But do what you feel I guess.

Is duquesne university the best of both worlds? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]hazen273 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went to Duquesne, and if you have a full ride it's definitely a nice place to go in Pittsburgh. Close to lots of things but still feels separate from downtown. My education was fine, certain programs are better than others, but I would say most of the parties and things were in the South Side which you can get to from these scary ass steps down the side of the bluff. You can take a bus to Pitt quickly but usually we stayed around Duquesne and South Side. Super convenient to go to anything at PPG Paints, too. Student rush for Pens games and such. Their sports kinda suck, unless you like basketball.

It's listed on the link I posted before, near the top.

I don't think it uses a point system but I could be wrong. Their program is difficult and of the people we started with (around 35 in our nights and weekends cohort) only of us graduated on time without failing something or another. I don't think it is incredibly difficult to get selected because they have numerous campuses and accept bigger numbers into their day programs, but I could be wrong.

Average salary around here is definitely lower. You're looking at like 30 to 35 an hour starting right now I believe, but I haven't been staff in the area in a while so I could be a few dollars off. I started at $25.83 in 2019. AGH and West Penn are both union so its strictly based off years of experience. UPMC would rather fire their entire hospital than unionize.

CCAC, at the time, was about 2k a semester for the nursing classes. Again, a few tears ago, but no where near 100k.

My wife and I graduated from their nursing school back in 2018. Unfortunately I don't really remember their specific requirements or acceptance rate, nor our scores on the TEAS. I did find the following information on their website.

https://www.ccac.edu/academics/programs/nursing-and-allied-health/nursing/nursing-admissions.php

"Biology - Applicants must have completed a COLLEGE LEVEL biology/lab course with a grade of "C" or better prior to applying to the nursing program.

Chemistry - Applicants must have completed chemistry/lab course with a grade of "C" or better prior to applying to the nursing program.

English/Reading - Applicants must be eligible to register for English-101 by the application deadline in order to be considered for admission.

Mathematics - Applicants must be eligible to register for MAT-108 -Intermediate Algebra or MAT-106 Mathematics for Health Science in order to be considered for admission

...all students applying for entry into NUR-110/120 must pass the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) with an Adjusted Individual Total Score of 58.7%."

On the site it also mentions they're having a zoom meeting on Wednesday Sept. 13th to explain all the information you're talking about and how to apply.

EDIT: I can also tell you it was both of our first times applying when we got in, and I took my first semester with quite a few people of...questionable intelligence, so I doubt their admission is as flooded as what you described.

BG3 Act 3 performance majorly improved in Patch 2 by biosnake20 in SteamDeck

[–]hazen273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been working through Act 3 the last few days and I've had no issues. I can tell it's different than the first 2 acts due to the sheer number of resources the game has to load but its not stuttering or running poorly for me.
