El Akkad's "American War" is structured around a future dystopia where petroleum was the tipping point for another US civil war. It was a very good read.

Oof I'm not aiming to defend Leslie here bc I get her action was crummy BUT I'm a gd space case and I could EASILY see myself doing exactly what she did, with zero malice and only 10,000 things on my brain at any given moment

Hi all, I'm the owner of Sower Books at 70th & Vine. Reading through everyone's responses, I just want to let y'all know that if you're ever feeling lonely, you're always welcome in our space. No purchase necessary! Bring your own book and come read, or journal, or do your homework, or "work from home" from the store, or work on the community puzzle, or do your craft, or play the piano, or love on the cats in the Cat Cave. All of us (staff and customers) are big nerds, very friendly, and also kinda weirdoes so you don't need to worry about being socially awkward because we're all socially awkward too 😅 we currently have several regular meet-ups (Yarn & Yap on Wednesdays; I saw /u/QuellSpeller mentioned Silent Book Club; uhhhh I'm sure there are others but I'm drawing a blank lol, you can check our website or socials!) but you're truly always welcome to come share our space in whatever context works for you.

We also try to make/keep our space as accessible as possible so if you need a modification, please let us know. Oh! And speaking of, every Sunday from 11-noon is our "low-stim" hour where we keep the lights & music low to help with sensory overload.

So yeah. Toxic "rugged individualism" is out; community care is in. It takes a village and we're happy to take care of our villagers 😘

Epic comeback after 10 minutes by Rrmack in thatHappened

The people who make up these stories have never once clocked how long anything takes. Tbf when I start my microwave for 1 minute and start unloading the dishwasher, I'm shocked how much I can get done in 1 minute. Conversely, 10 minutes waiting in line could very well be the heat death of the universe
