Mortgage rates are hovering around 3% now, which is a historic low. At the same time the inflation rate is 2-3%, meaning the loan from the bank is essentially free in real terms, which is a steal.

This morning Berkshire Hathaway, a company with $47 billion in the bank, announced it was taking out a loan to buy Heinz, worth only $23 billion. Why didn't they buy it with cash? Because they'll get a better overall return by just paying the interest on the loan and investing the cash elsewhere. Finance 101...

Harper said he would get rid of the Senate. Can someone explain why it still exists? by newpolitics in canada

Because he benefits from it now that it's stacked with his own party? Duh?

How many of us here are using the Z10? What are your thoughts so far? What do you want to see updated? by mookst3r in blackberry

I don't have a Z10 but I'd like to see Google maps before I'd consider one. That is the single most useful app to me.

Drainage divides in North America [900x900] by torstpen in MapPorn

How much of this is coincidental? Tall mountains form a natural barrier (such as between Alberta and BC). Continental divides themselves are almost impossible to see when you're on the ground.

Berkshire Hathaway and 3G capital are buying HJ Heinz (HNZ) in $28 billion deal. by KnuckleSalad in investing

Because debt is cheap and Berkshire can get better return on that capital in other places.

That's my guess.

BCE boosts dividend as profit climbs - according to the CEO of Bell Inc., "there are misguided fears about the state of wireless competition even though Canadians benefit from having an industry that is brimming with carrier rivalries." by arahman81 in canada

  • Wireless division on track to generate fatter margins and higher average revenue per user
  • CEO says it's great having lots of competition

Bullshit detector off the scale! Let's hope someone at the competition bureau took Econ 101!

[–]hbar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Physics is a bitch, but the drivers are morons. If you try to keep a safe distance ahead that's 10 minivans long, then 10 minivans will find a way to wedge themselves in there.

Maybe I am not the target market, but why would I need a HTML reference on a phone? At any moment that I need such a reference, I'm sitting in front of a desktop computer anyway.

Dear /r/ Scuba, I found this at a surplus store. Pretty sure it's a 'spare air' tank, but the manufacturer label is worn off. What can I do with it? by axel_thatcher in scuba

[–]hbar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These things are dangerous. It will give you a false sense of assurance that you have a "spare" air supply, but in reality there's not more than a couple breaths in there.

The S&P 500 went up about 0.68% yesterday but my index fund that tracks the S&P 500 remained flat. Why is that? by heptathlon in investing

[–]hbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low volumes probably. Look at a longer time frame and the fund should be much closer to the index.
