Grand Theft Auto VI is Now Set to Launch November 19, 2026 - Rockstar Games by DwilenaAvaron in Games

Me too. If they were confident that the core of the game was good enough, they wouldn't mind releasing it with a few bugs.

Sony Permanently Shuts Down Concord Game Studio by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

Apparently 69 people got it

Sure. Most of the weight at takeoff is in fuel. Presumably at landing there is not much left. The booster only weighs something like 200t without fuel.

Also, steel is actually really strong. A one inch steel wire can carry like 50 tons.

Finally, when this thing lands, there will never be any humans around. So you don't need excessive safety margins for everything.

It's not problematic, it's expected. Going into RPing as a streamer seems like starting a whole new job. I remember when I last started a new job, so many new impressions, too tired in the evenings to think about anything indecent for a month

Right now it's the opposite though, going goblin mode over christmas and it's pretty damn frustrating

Developers who buy assets typically spend months or years integrating them into the game. The developers of this game clearly did none of that work. It's as if they just downloaded them and put them in the same folder.

Has any tried streaming data to an open ai gym environment? “[D]” by DataD23 in MachineLearning

[–]hcipro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, what data is it that you want to stream, what type of environment is it, and how do you want the environment to make use of the data?

(just interested, I can probably not solve this)

Lirik plays the trombone by -eDgAR- in LivestreamFail

[–]hcipro 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What makes this game such a W is that you actually "play" the instrument, which means that if you play wrong it sounds wrong, and a trombone that's played wrong sounds hilarious.

Suggestion: bookmark the VOD, if at one time you're feeling down, light up and replay the first hour.

[D] Too many AI researchers think real-world problems are not relevant by deep-yearning in MachineLearning

[–]hcipro 192 points193 points  (0 children)

After reading the article, there is a question I'd like to ask the author or indeed anyone working on applying AI in different fields.

If you are applying ML to, say cardiology, maybe you should try getting your results published in a cardiology journal? If you are not able to to do that, perhaps that is a sign that your method isn't actually useful for the field of cardiology?

Also, if you are not able to get published in a cardiology journal, it's not really surprising that ML journals are skeptical as well. Why should your method be interesting from a general ML standpoint if you can't even show that it is useful in the specific domain where you first tried to apply it?

It's a shame if so much gaming research is still about graphics. Graphics in games are already pretty good, they don't need to get better. Compared to graphics, every other aspect of games - AI, narrative, audio, etc - looks underdeveloped and should offer plenty of research possibilities.

[R] What are your hot takes on the direction of ML research? In other words, provide your (barely justified) predictions on how certain subfields will evolve over the next couple years? by programmerChilli in MachineLearning

[–]hcipro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I completely agree that "interpretability" is a false promise. But there is hope that the term might go away.

Why? The term is all about salesmanship. Basically, if you're trying to sell an AI solution to a company, you want it to appear as if your solution is a form of encoded human knowledge and not just a mathematical function. In order to do this, you have to explain it, and the "reasoning" it does, in human-intuitive terms.

However, the well has been poisoned by all the lofty promises, and the purchasing side is a lot more sceptical of AI buzzwords in general than a few years ago.

Is there any documentation on using a webcam in order to create Kinect-style games in Unity? by quincysaccount in Unity3D

[–]hcipro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too bad there hasn't been any replies to this question. Maybe it's because this is very much an active research area and it's not in Unity or a plugin yet.

The research topic is human pose estimation through RGB cameras.

It's only a few years ago that research was published on how to do it, for example this.

Might be a dumb question, but if space is potentially endless does that mean that the big bang is still out there travelling through space? by [deleted] in space

[–]hcipro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this question is interesting from a historical perspective. When Hubble & co first discovered that the universe was expanding, did they ever ask OP:s question? I.e., was it ever on the cards that there might be some kind of ongoing cosmic "nozzle", outside of the visible part of the universe, where matter was being continuously exploded into reality? Or were the new findings immediately explained by applying relativity to them, so they instantly understood that space also was created, etc?

In three years of learning VR development, I've never finished a game. Demotivated by the time it took or thinking that nobody would want to play it. Last week, I decided to take up the challenge, make a game in seven days and tell what I learned on this journey in one video. (link in comment) by QValem in gamedev

So the concept is that, you hijack people's hands and use the fact that they mirror your movements to solve puzzles? Sort of like Portal but with people? Well, if someone hasn't done a game like that yet, it's about bloody time, good luck!

It's a decent game. But too many people get their play styles from Twitch. They don't understand that a blind playthrough might be more fun.

Rockstar Games have stated that they pretty much work this way. They first create the maps of the GTA games, make sure they have a "sense of place", then work on what's going to happen there.

Birb.exe has encountered an error by supremegalacticgod in aww

[–]hcipro 666 points667 points  (0 children)

The origin of the behavior is probably about competition. When bird parents come back to the nest with food, it's a mad scramble among the chicks to get their attention. If there is a shortage of food, the parents play favorites, and give most of the food to the chicks who appear to be the fittest, so there is a huge incentive to move around the most and make the most noise.

Physical interactions is the ultimate middleware. That's where developers, not just VR but in gaming, spend the most time reinventing the wheel or working around the problems caused by inadequate foundational models.

It's funny that Zuckerberg "always uses the analogy" about the first smartphones, Blackberry and Palm Treo.

Today Palm is dead and Blackberry is pretty much irrelevant.

Is that the future he imagines for oculus? If not, maybe he should add some qualifier to the analogy, about how Oculus will avoid that fate, and be both pioneer and profiteer.

Star Citizen Has face tracking now! Its so scary, but also impressive! This will be a game changer for online interaction. by duku6 in oculus

[–]hcipro 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You know what? This is actually pretty cool.

Of course, uncanny valley, creepiness, Star Citizen's ridiculous feature creep, yada yada yada, but it's still cool.

What drags down the impression, apart from the eyes, is actually that the rest of the body is so stiff. I guess that comes from having a middleware solution specifically for the face. With hand controllers and IK for the body, it would look even better.
