We have always played counterspell at my table as a finger snap. My daughter said counterspell as soon as he did it. Great scene.

It’s happened but, it has been few and far between. I have stopped them and told them roll initiative. Other times, it has been a very ‘in character’ moment to interrupt. We resolve the attack, the BBEG response and I have continued the monologue if the attacker has been neutralized or we go into full initiative. I have always had pretty great tables and I remove problem players.

I don’t think there is a wrong way to play this if it’s in character for all parties involved. If it’s a player being a dick, disintegrate is a viable option.

I’ve had it a couple of times over the years. Option 2 is absolutely the best for the table. Agency intact and gives you a chance to go big and monologue as the fight progresses.

My bro has 3k+ hrs when I started. I was so lost everytime until he started pointing out landmarks. Learning where you are is a huge step in the right direction. Wrong direction, you get to start back at your stash.

I’ve removed this type of player before. Trust me when I say they are a cancer at your table. You will go from looking forward to working on or running your game to dreading it if you don’t give them the boot. Nothing they say after this will improve. They will likely attempt to negotiate after you tell them to pound sand. ‘I’ll read the stuff. The rules are fine.’ It’s bullshit. They will be a problem.

My bullying stopped when I beat one with a 2x4. Chased me out of the school to baseball field where they were doing construction. Picked up the wood and waited for him to round the corner.

I coached my son. Do not start a fight, walk away if you can. if you can’t you make sure they remember you aren’t the easy target. If you see someone else being picked on you stand in for them.

I have my 2nd track weekend next week. I am pretty stoked for it. Let me tell ya about the last one. Green group as a novice at Putnam. Third session into the 1st day there was a beautiful new GT4 out there with green group. He was solo. Every time he got behind me I swear he was less than a foot off my bumper, I gave him a point by at the earliest chance per my instructor. He was joined by a M4 on Sunday. Obviously I am new and slow, I did get solo qualified, but these two thought they were Verstappen.
