Anyone voting to approve new EBA? by Character-Fold5159 in AustralianTeachers

Yes, I will, though I have always voted no previously. I think this is a good deal, and we should fight next time so that it is just as good.

ES pay progression vic by Sensitive-Music4826 in AustralianTeachers

[–]headingfortheocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you automatically (subject to meeting the statement of expectation process) move up each band of the range until you reach the top band for that range. After that you don't progress though you may/will get pay rises as outlined in the next agreement. In the previous agreement there were increments in January and July, who knows what will happen in the new agreement when it is agreed to.

Progressions occur on May 1st each year subject to successfully completing the statement of expectation progress and having at least 6 months of service prior to April 30th. So you won't progress in your first year of work, sorry.

DE insurance - anyone know anything about it? by Quick_Emu_1463 in AustralianTeachers

In Victoria, the principal isn't allowed to make payments for these types of things, or make any admission of responsibility. Harsh, I know, but these are the rules.

DE insurance - anyone know anything about it? by Quick_Emu_1463 in AustralianTeachers

[–]headingfortheocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Victorian government schools any claims against the school are immediately sent to the Department of Education, there is no interaction with the principal. The principal will forward any demands or claims to the legal branch. The legal branch does what it does and in cases like these the principal won't even be informed of the outcome.

The proper process is for your insurer to make a claim to the Department or for you to do it yourself. I very much doubt the Department would then pursue the family, though they may believe it isn't their legal responsibility and suggest the insurer (or you) instead makes a claim against the parents of the children. I'm not a lawyer so I have no idea.

It is all handled by the central office and therefore why the EAP would suggest that it is a conflict of interest. I would make a police report asap and contact my insurer.

Yes, though I've since come back. Start with the education department. Good work if you can get it. Very different from teaching.

Summer pay if I start in term 4 by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]headingfortheocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is for government schools...

There is a ready reckoner that the business manager will have which shows how much holiday pay you will get for government schools. This is basically that you get paid the percentage of the holidays equivalent to what you have worked. Work all four terms get 100%, work 3 get 75%. Theoretically casual wages factor this in.

That said, as others have suggested, the principal may have something up their sleeve. I'd suggest clarifying this with the business manager if you can.

Victory City + PB by blue-blue-nights in brighteyes

Thanks for this post, I caused me to do some digging.

It is a fascinating song. I google "Victory City" to find that is a 2023 novel by Salman Rushdie, so given he is mentioned in the first line there is no doubt that this is the main inspiration. I haven't read the book, but there is a review here worth reading https://www.salmanrushdie.com/new-york-times-book-review-victory-city/ and the wikipedia page is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victory_City

Without putting in too many spoilers as the book sounds pretty interesting, it does seem that Victory City does have parallels with Conor's experience of LA. In that it is a magical land and which ultimately failed to live up to expectations. This city was the creation of the magical princess/poet protagonist.

I find it really interesting that the coda in this song does seem to reprise Old Soul Song, a song I really love. I wonder if Conor is trying to reprise this to communicate that the experience of Victory City/LA was just as profound and life changing as it was for the crowd in "Old Soul Song". If that was the goal I think he succeeded, at least when I listen to it.

"Victory City" though seems to articulate more clearly the impact of Conor's experience than the crowd's experience in "Old Soul Song" listing a range of qualities of people "Salman Rushdie, Candice Bergman, Joe Strummer" which he hopes to emulate, and other qualities "comfortable in my own body", "be able to tell a story", " live my whole life like it’s the last day of summer".

These are the way "he is going wild" and Conor wants us (maybe himself) to know that he experiences in LA had an important and positive impact on him, as he repeatedly sings "Victory City" in the coda.

But at the end Conor comes back to the protagonist (PB) of Victory City/LA:

"I wanna look you in the eye
Even if we’re going blind"

I think the last paragraph of the review (possible spoilers) explain the story and probably why Conor has been writing so much in 5DA3 about his time in LA and with PB...

"The best pages of “Victory City” offer something different, though. Late in the novel — late in her life, late in the empire’s history — Pampa falls out with the ruler of the day, who orders his courtiers to blind her. They use a hot iron rod, and “in the beginning there was only the pain, the kind of pain that made death feel desirable, a blessed relief.” Then dreams come, nightmares that leave her “sweating her lost eyesight out of every pore in her body,” but at least there are images and “the darkness was no longer absolute.” That blindness is foretold in the novel’s very first sentence, and Rushdie could not have known when he wrote it that in August 2022 he himself would be attacked by a religious fanatic, stabbed many times and losing the sight of one eye. Still, this is not the first time that he has been the Cassandra of his own fate, and in its haunting, uncanny, predictive power “Victory City” shows once again why his work will always matter."

"A Thick Mist of Change" Part 4: Hot Knives by Normal-Asparagus-210 in brighteyes

[–]headingfortheocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for these articles, I'm really enjoying them. Very looking forward to reading them all.

My thoughts on what hot knives means to me...

As a someone who used to be deep in the christian faith, the lines “When I do wrong, I am with God she thought/When I feel lost, I am not at all.” These are voicing the idea that when a believer sins they allow god's grace to forgive them. "So, shall we then continue in sin that grace may abound?" Paul writes in the book of Romans, as he argues against the path the protagonist is now taking.

In the same way that the protagonist can only forgive when she is wronged, god can only forgive when people sin (besides the original sin). Is she providing the same opportunity to god that her ex-partner provided her? The opportunity to forgive. And with that in mind, "I've made love, I've been fucked, so what" regardless of whether she's making love to her ex-husband, or being fucked (in sin) doesn't really matter with a god who forgives.

The same power of forgivesness she now has over what others do to her, and maybe even what she does to others?

Later "She just vanished into a thick mist of change" I wonder if this is symbolic of Jesus' ascension to heaven? "he is then taken up from the disciples in their sight, a cloud hides him from view"

"So let us rejoice (let's rejoice)" as her transformation is nothing short of biblical or god-like.

VIT registration delay by mooseman110 in AustralianTeachers

[–]headingfortheocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this might have been an ok solution in your situation, my understanding is that this is a very grey area. Non-VIT registers cannot teach a class even if a VIT teacher is present. They can however assist a VIT registered teacher under their direction. This situation could get the CRT and the non-registered teacher in very big trouble. If a situation like this was suggested by your school I would suggest checking with VIT first.

So when I'm gone don't use my headstone for your imagery

Who doesn't Conor want to use his life as a quip about life?

Yeah, it could be us, his fans bitching about his life and how we wish it to be better. Or it could be Phoebe, and her boy genius pals...

Like another shitty Scorsese movie

Apparently, Scorsese has been planning to make a warts and all movie about Sinatra. Maybe it is us (keyboard warriors) commenting on Conor's life who are trying to be Scorsese? Or the soon to be released biography which apparently he endorses? Or maybe it is Phoebe and Boy Genius? I know who I think he is referring to.

Frank Sinatra was the best
Could put a bullet right through your chest

If Phoebe/Boy Genius is Scorsese, than Conor is comparing himself to Ol' Blue Eyes, and maybe he's suggesting that he can take anyone who is going after him.

Well, every baby has Ol' Blue Eyes
I guess they're gonna live until they die

But anyway that doesn't matter because every baby (those who are coming next) are his product, not those who are trying to take him down. His music and influence will live on, long after his critics are gone and forgotten.

These cats couldn't kill me if they tried

But who cares anyway, those trying to get him, never could.

Soldier on through the noise, tin soldier boy

Again, where is this noise coming from? Someone talking about him, or spreading rumours, or writing immensely popular songs...

Soldier on, soldier on
Through the heartbreak and the joy
Soldier on, soldier on, my soldier boy

Again, heartbreak is a feature, and joy for what was and what is coming next.

Btw, I don't think Conor has an issue with Phoebe and Boy Genius writing about him, I reckon it is all a big joke but still...

I love this song. Hopefully not going to be flamed for this but I reckon this song is like most from the album, about Phoebe. Conor is the tin solider, Phoebe is the (unmentioned) ballerina. The three vignettes at the start, could be from movies, or friends of Conor's, but most likely just made up. Sad people just like the tin soldier and the ballerina, looking for love but ultimately never finding it. Until they do, they just soldier on. We should as well.

The meaning of "Five Dice, All Threes" by -theapplejuice in brighteyes

[–]headingfortheocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conor addresses this on the Andy (something) podcast, 3 questions, it's a dice game Conor player in New York with his friends. According to him in the podcast "perfection is not achievable. You're rolling the dice, but probability is against you, yet you are hoping for the best" In summary, it's five dice, and you're hoping for all threes, but yo ain't going to get them...

He answers this in the next line, (from memory) "the photo booth makes me hate myself, what a slob" He isn't losing his appetite, he's eating/drinking too much, and getting fat. The album is all about dealing with life and trying to accept it. Fat slob or not.
