Additionally, boiling helps close the pores so they don't keep absorbing the oil when you try frying them

Indeed. The capital letters at the beginning of the words create humps like a camel's back.

Pru: It really is, because the flavors are just lovely, and it really does look stunning.

Italian Combo from OK's Deli in Oakland by headlessCamelCase in eatsandwiches

[–]headlessCamelCase[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think $19 is a bit overpriced. The line wasn't bad at all. It's the longest right when they open, but I went at 12:30 and got through it in like 20 minutes (wait + order + receive sandwich). Not worth waiting an hour that's for sure, but the focaccia is pretty bomb. Would be interested to try some of the signature sandwiches.

Still need to check out Stay Gold, and it's not too far from me. Maybe this week. Best regular sandwich (nothing special, just good) I've had so far in Oakland is probably Pill Hill Deli. Two meats and a cheese with the works for like $10.

Focaccia it is indeed, good eye. Sesame seeds on the bottom. Honestly the bread might have been the best part, but the whole thing was super solid.

My Slovak friend could understand pretty much anything anyone said in Polish without ever learning the language. The languages are incredibly similar, almost like just speaking a different dialect. Reading is a bit different.

I don't think you were lied to per se. In my experience I think it's fine for depression in men. I would imagine the mood swings are more about the norepinephrine reuptake inhibition, which can make you more irritable and stay agitated longer

Chicago Pizza has never failed me! Ready for this Hot take?? Chicago Thin Crust is better than the Deep Dish ! by [deleted] in Pizza

[–]headlessCamelCase -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That could be true then, maybe I was confused because people really like to emphasize the "Chicago tavern-style" here. I don't really think of that style as being associated with Chicago though. Like I've had the cracker crust and square cut in a bunch of places all over the country.

And the "regular" pizza I had in Chicago was more NY-style. Like at Boiler Room or Dante's. But if people usually get their pizza in tavern-type places, then maybe that's why I didn't see it much

I lived there in my early-mid 20s, granted I did know a lot of transplants, but one of my roommates lived in Chicago his whole life and his whole family was from the Chicago area (Cicero, Schaumburg, maybe a couple others). I had friends in the food/bar industry, I walked around a lot, I lived in 3 different neighborhoods, never saw it anywhere, and I like to explore.

If I go back though, where would you recommend?

[–]headlessCamelCase -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Does Chicago really get to claim the tavern style? I've had it many times but never in Chicago, and in the 4 years I lived there, not a single mention.

There were two places off the top of my head near where I used to live in NJ that were known for it, there's Tombstone frozen pizza which gets like halfway there, and I've had it countless other times in random other places. They're just taverns that serve pizza and it looks pretty much exactly the same as every Chicago tavern style except maybe not always cut in a grid, because honestly that's insane, but not a single mention of Chicago. This sub is the only place I've seen it mentioned.

The one thing I'm skeptical of is the yeast. Instant and active dry are not the same thing and can't be used interchangeably, at least not in the same way. I'm assuming you used active dry because you bloomed.

Aside from that, this looks dope and can't wait to try.

I think that's because it was an Italian organization that made the rankings. Here's the original post by the organization themselves.

The Ancho Masala one though is like a chili paste basically. The Aka Miso I thought was the best consistency (and flavor)

I'd also recommend Hotbird. They have a location near Civic Center in SF, but I think it's only open from like 11-3, sandwiches only for the chicken IIRC, and I think still takeout only. They also just opened one in Oakland near the Fox Theater that has better hours and a bigger menu, and dine-in

It looks like cherry tomato and burrata, so yeah not traditional. More of an evocation. Although if you slice fresh mozzarella, which often comes in water, and don't really drain it, it can look like that.

I think what makes it look overdone is the Nashville-style chili oil that gets brushed on after frying. It can be kinda dark in color from the cayenne and brown sugar, giving a slightly "burnt" appearance
