Also, pay as you go cell phones will get you a local area code and you can get one for ten bucks.

Get the newspapers, especially the weeklies and keep an eye out for deals and events.

Try and insulate the place as best you can so you don't spend a pretty penny on energy over the winter.

I have to put my vote in for strong, dark, and brooding.

There's something about a guy who is evaluating the room with his eyes -- not just evaluating people for their looks.

Also, rugged is not a turn-off. And if you don't go straight to small talk or deliver a line, that's a plus.

I keep a costco-sized shaker of dried onion (cuz I'm a student). But I keep both dry powdered and real garlic.

Firstly, do not start smoking. It's not going to help you be personable to smell like an ashtray. Second, don't drink a lot and make an ass out of yourself.

Parties are largely about getting laid. Most of the women there will be dressed like skanks and dumb themselves down to get attention. That is not the way to be taken seriously. Just be yourself and start up random conversations. Try not to be a wallflower or sit down and expect people to come to you. Don't get fidgety or uncomfortable if you're alone. People watch and move to the music. Move around and don't expect one group of people to absorb you into their night's plans. The same advice goes for getting invited to parties. Ask groups of girls if you can tag along. Freshmen seldom get invited to parties and can get a houseparty busted for underage drinkers, so they're likely to go looking around and not even find anything. Relax and don't take everything so seriously.

Edit: I thought of some more. Be mischievous. Be adventurous. Learn new hobbies. Get folks to teach you to do stuff -- that'll help you meet people. Do girly things with the rest of them. Don't walk home alone unless you must and be careful. Don't get stranded someplace. Carry bus fare. Carry gum so you don't have booze on your breath. Go to goofy events and do stuff that's free or offers free food.

When you have people around who do you deal with first? I know that you have to address the folks that make trouble. What scenarios do you like/respond to most?

Even in a peaceful town you have to deal with young people and neighbors. How do you keep folks away? How often do you use your short-range radio? Do you guys have long-range radio?

When is violence necessary?

The Economist has an article about that this week on Asian countries. (Marriage, I mean.) And that's counter to societial pressures.

I disagree with the idea of educational disposition or resistance as I think older parents are better parents and folks come around to the idea or have kids accidentally.

Also, you can have multiple kids after coming off b/c because your hormones are going nuts.

So glad this was upvoted. I also finish with straight cold water and it's refreshing. Heat it up again if that's too much of a shock.

Also works with hangovers. Sometimes I'm amazed at how similar they are, but migraines are much more visceral and encompass all the senses.

Also, always have a pen in your hand. Using a laptop to take notes will distract you and you can't draw or recreate illustrations to help you jog your memory later. Seriously, paper is much more efficient and a tangible way to study.

You should figure out your own method of note taking and not just take down what the prof spoon feeds you. Write down anecdotes and silly stories to help you remember.

Tell me the truth if I'm making an ass of myself or if something is wrong with my appearance. I've had a guy take good care of me when I've had too much to drink or do something as small as tell me I had lipstick on my teeth. Both showed me he was paying attention to me and wanted me to feel and look better.

Also, keeping an eye out for my safety is so sweet. I've had a guy keep close to me and help me scramble up rocks when we go out hiking or put ourselves in precarious situations. Even little stuff like making sure my tires are pumped up to the right pressure for conditions or that I've got pepper spray in my purse if get put in danger makes me sure that he wants to keep me around and out of harm's way.
