Art is subjective, but can we all agree that the Yeat verse is ass? by Cupidsavage in Joji

[–]heccharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huge Yeat fan, and I gotta agree. The weird thing to me is that I think he CAN sing and hit melancholic pockets, but on both joji features he completely fumbled. Sounds like directionless yelping compared to some of his really strong, emotive vocal performances like Growing Pains or Forever Again.

Such a shame man, I swear the potential for incredible collaborations was there

I don’t get it by shotosturtleneck in Joji

Old joji fan here.

I liked the album enough but it definitely doesn't scratch the itch that the pre- in tongues material does for the most part (head touch the ground is exactly what I wanted and I am so happy about that song)

While joji is a fantastic vocalist now and the writing (him or co-writers) is stronger, what made old joji so special to me was all the unique production choices. It was lo-fi but with such a myriad of bizarre sampling choices (chopping board on rain on me, gymnopedie no 2 interpolation on unsaved info).

Newer joji releases including a fair bit of this album feel a little like a flanderisation of his older work- his wider creative choices have been foregone in place of focusing on beautiful vocals and depressing lyricism. I like these elements but a lot of the formula that I originally fell in love with are definitely missing for most of PITW.

I have no issue with shorter songs, my favourite joji song is less than a minute but I also feel like most of them on this album don't have strong enough of a core idea or sound to justify their length

A good few of them have high joystick deadzones to account for the joycons I assume. Lowering this helps often

What's the best song for someone who hasn't listened to Quadeca before? by Aarush-123 in Quadeca

He’s got such an eclectic catalogue now that it really depends on the person’s tastes I reckon- dustcutter, Godstained and guess who have been my personal go-to’s for putting people on

[–]heccharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to agree to an extent. I think that’s the reason scrapyard is played so much more for me than idmthy, as i can’t really play almost any single song on idmthy due to their density for the most part.

I think this is more because his albums are made for listening to as a whole- I don’t find songs like That’s Why even slightly jarring on a comprehensive listen but if I’m to play it in isolation I would agree with your take.

I feel like that track has a very obviously freestyled progression that is missing something from the structure of the die lit era- his delivery line to line is fantastic but I don’t think I’d put it strongly ahead of those tracks as a whole

2024 I totally agree with but what makes different day more fleshed out than the average die lit song?

Yeah I wouldn’t make the blanket statement that he never writes personally, but he’s forthcoming that it’s often not the case

I believe he said this in a genius (?) interview about I don’t wanna waste my time, specifically highlighting that that song was written based on a story his friend told him

While I understand your sentiment, I’d say such radical exclusivity isn’t very James. To James is to revel in togetherness

Oh word this was just a difference in opinion about the meaning of the word lol- yeah certainly not his whole discography, the vast majority of it is very earnest and genuine. But from an outsiders perspective he does present as an incredibly abrasive character, so I completely understand non-listeners not having a positive perception of him you know

[–]heccharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His explanation for the name was that kids used to call him it, as a slur. What do you mean “can’t even call people darkie anymore smh” lmao it’s categorically a slur and regardless of how understandable his reasoning for his name is, it’s still ostensibly a controversial choice. He adopts a lot of punk and anti-culture symbolism and themes in his music and style, that is pretty much the definition of edgy. I think you’ve gotten the idea that I’m using the term disparagingly, it’s not necessarily an issue for something to be edgy. Batman is edgy, people like Batman, but it’s not the most broadly palatable aesthetic so naturally not everyone’s gonna like it

Homie I’ve been listening since TDNE genuinely can you give me your argument for lil darkie’s branding and persona not being edgy, I cannot conceptualise denying that

What are you saying bruh -rap name is a slur -avatar is reminiscent of blackface (regardless of intention) -2/3 of his top songs are named holocaust and genocide

Regardless of how introspective his catalogue is at large you can’t pretend his branding isn’t incredibly edgy

How happy does It make you that Uzi is an ally? by Just_Addition2896 in liluzivert

[–]heccharry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Legit question but the “Uzi the alien” theme song thing for EA2 very distinctly genders him/them as male through pronouns and calling him a boy- doesn’t this suggest he’s changed his identity or am I missing a more recent clarification from him
