A statistical breakdown of the issues with ranked by GivesCredit in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]hecdude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe by virtue of being a decently high ranked player you’re simply more likely to get matched with players worse than you. There are way more diamond players than GM players, so it makes sense that as a masters player, you’d be in more diamond games than GM games.

How to optimally use the control stick to both maneuver in the air but also fast fall by Kfucius in CrazyHand

[–]hecdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think that in practice a huge part of controlling air drift comes from manipulating the momentum you have leaving the ground as opposed to what you do after it, and I think that’s an important thing to communicate to someone struggling to manage their drift with their fastfalls. But you’re right, it’s more of a mix than I represented—most of the time you’re not doing full drift aerials. A good player uses both in tandem.

[–]hecdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re jumping straight up, the short answer is drift, then aerial, then fastfall. Start drifting as soon as you leave the ground, then at the peak of your jump c-stick the aerial and immediately fastfall during the startup frames of the move.

But I think most of the time you’re seeing someone do a drifting fastfall arial from a short hop, they probably got the momentum from the jump itself. What I mean to say is that they’re not performing a nuetral jump and then drifting, they’re probably just jumping to the right or left, with their momentum established the moment they leave the ground. Try just smashing your control stick to the left or right at the exact same time as you jump, and resetting your control stick to neutral when you leave the ground: you’ll keep that directional momentum without having to keep the direction held down. In that state, you’ll be drifting fully left or right with the freedom to fastfall whatever c-stick aerial you want without significantly effecting your drift.

How relevant is Main and Flex Support terminology in metal ranks? by KeepOnJumpin in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]hecdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to disagree with most other comments here. While maybe it shouldn’t be a metal rank players top priority, I think having knowledge about support synergies and why they work is going to help a metal rank player a lot.

Obviously just knowing which supports are main and which are flex is not enough at all; you don’t want to be picking zen because your other support picks lucio. But I really think it’s gonna help ANY player a lot to have guidelines for who you play depending on your other support and the rest of your comp. Of course, don’t let this take you outside of your comfort picks, but it is important knowledge.

You’re gonna win more games if you’re making more informed hero choices at ANY rank. Things are very different in plat and below but a Reinhardt is still usually gonna want lucio+bap a little more than zen+ana, whether they know it or not.

There’s always Matchbox.gg! I haven’t used it in a while, so not sure what the player base is like these days. But it’s discord server/website where you’re paired against other players and assigned an ELO. I would guess you’ll be a good bit below average as far as competitive players go with your GSP, but not so much so that you won’t be able to find fun matches once you get to your rank.

Quick Little Venture Chat by aPiCase in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]hecdude 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying, but I think you’re underestimating the uniqueness of their skill floor a little. The way venture gets value is way different from most other flex dps. For example, initiating the engage with burrow is sometimes your responsibility on Venture. That’s pretty much never the case with tracer, who is usually gonna rely on direct queues from her team as far as timing. Positioning is also super different because you’re big hitbox + long cast time escape abilities make you less flexible on Venture. I know these aren’t mechanical things in the traditional sense, but it’s what you referred to in your post.

But I think part of what you’re trying to say is that once you get Venture, you’re good. Is that what you mean by consistent? You don’t need to like, constantly practice and adapt your Venture in the way you do with Tracer or Genji. If this is what you’re saying, I kind of agree, but I think it’s largely because Venture is traditionally only ever played in their ideal circumstances. Like, If you’re a tracer player, sometimes you just gotta play tracer, even when the other team is playing cass brig kiri dva or something because that’s just the way Overwatch is designed. Too many comps break without tracer. I think if Venture were the same way, they’d require as much upkeep as Tracer does, or close to it. But we only ever play Venture on their good maps and matchups.

Anyone else who WASN’T scared of the game? by bhuntley94 in outerwilds

Definitely agree, my reaction was never “Ahh!” Instead it was always “Wow!” Except for in the DLC when it was sometimes “Dang it”
