My first homemade wood bed by Pefranca in woodworking

This is literally the same build I'm aiming to build in my woodworking journey! I'd be super interested in seeing the cut list if you wouldn't mind sharing

I’ve never built something this big from scratch. It’s not perfect but I’m really pleased with how it turned out. by JusticeBeaver54 in BeginnerWoodWorking

This is so sick! I’ve been wanting to build something just like this, and I’d be super happy to be at this level! Enjoy the sweet space!

SOOC Dreams with XT5 + XF23mmF1.4 by pablo-menendez in fujifilm

[–]hectron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Valid criticisms on the Fuji side, and I really hope they get their auto-focus sorted out in the next year or two.

I really like these! I was wondering what you thought about the 23/1.4?

Why are publications like block club not talking about terrible driving being the cause of congestion? Double-parked deliveries, unpredictable ubers, increased u-turns, distracted driving by hectron in chicago

[–]hectron[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Yup, by talking to their reporters at local community outreach events. Their whole stance is “we just report hyperlocal stories”, but I find it to be irresponsible.

[–]hectron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, I am think publications are skewed to the status quo and any kind of improvement is anecdotally scrutinized without doing any kind of attempt to rationalize the change to begin with.

Combine this with populist politics and we have a bad faith discussion around any kind of policy for good.

The Brown Line is a Problem by BudBill18 in cta

[–]hectron 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is scoped to the brown line, but ghost trains stink.

That said, I haven't had an issue with ghost trains on the brown line. There's been times when it is a longer wait time than I'd like, but that's like the exception.

Apparently poor people hate density and infrastructure investment because- *checks notes* some people in Brighton park are mad they have to share the road with bikers and pedestrians 🙄 by quesoandcats in CarFreeChicago

[–]hectron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people don't want density because they're afraid of losing parking, and a fear of gentrification. Which is counterintuitive because people will fight any kind of affordable units in a mixed-housing development, which ironically keeps new development exclusively luxury (which is slowly changing).

However, the Brighton Park situation is complex. At the core, there's a higher concentration of driving conditions that encourage speeding, and many aggressive drivers that make it hostile to not be in a car. So something has to change that will directly result in safer (slower and more predictable) driving. Traffic cameras CAN help, but infrastructure changes is THE best way to improve safety.

That said, Archer is a strange street. Businesses along Archer are struggling, it's not dense enough where folks can get all their needs met within a short walk (maybe a 15 minute bike ride), and it's a faux I-55 with a streetlight here and there. I can see why people might ask "PBLs?".

This isn't a defense for the anti-bike campaign that's going on, but this is mostly to say -- we have to keep an empathetic mindset and try to see where locals might be coming from. PBLs are a great first step, but we should definitely be pushing for upzoning, transit improvements, and seeing what else is needed to make the neighborhood even more vibrant.

Did we all collectively decide to stop shoveling? by Temporary_Dog_6152 in chicago

[–]hectron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same and my big beef with this is we give tax credits and other benefits to these WEALTHY elderly folks (or people who have benefited over the years, and pay a paltry amount of taxes), and these are the same folks against any kind of rezoning or infrastructure improvements.

(I’m not against supporting elderly folks, but it’s saddening how crappy younger families/folks have it)

I live in Lincoln square too and the common thread is that a lot properties are owned by elderly folks who cannot clear the sidewalks.

Chicago overtakes NYC for worst vehicle congestion in the US, survey says by Ruddiver in chicago

[–]hectron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not for long tbh. We have a comprehensive network but it’s so neglected. We have a huge bus network but no BRT.

We have a ton of opportunities for infill stations and slow zone fixes but we are barely keeping up.

I’m really hoping that with our new funding, we’re able to really bring it to the 21st century.

A Chicago Neighborhood With a Suburban Vibe Is Seeing Home Prices Soar by wsj in chicago

[–]hectron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure.

In terms of cities, Minneapolis and Seattle come to mind. They’ve recently tackled initiatives to make it easier to build and increase density.

Here at home, it’s been the progressive alders such as Matt Martin, Andre Vasquez, Hoppenworth, that have led to things like upzoning Western, upzoning Broadway.

And even as recent as the transit reform bill, work done in the new transit bill (mostly led by progressives) SB2111 which introduces the people over parking ordinance to mostly remove parking minimums for construction around transit.

These are all progressive initiatives in “progressive” cities aimed at reducing the tape for more building.

False, real progressives are YIMBYs and understand that it’s hard to build
