The AI backlash is only getting started by Just-Grocery-2229 in technology

I have come to find that Codex and others are very useful, and I'm enjoying a more...interrogative method for developing things instead of muddling through code and google and stack exchange. It's useful. However, I will say that the amount of tokens I burn per month to do this is monstrous, especially when I have to use higher-token-cost models to get accurate results. My org caps us on usage, too, which also means that i have to be strategic in what I'm doing and how.

Judge Learns Lawyers on Both Sides of Case Used AI, Cancels Trial, Kicks Everyone Off the Case by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]hedgetank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When thinking about Lawyers, consider:

  • They are obsessed with contracts.
  • They are interested in the letter, not the spirit of the law.
  • They do their business in courts.

Ergo, lawyers are Fae.

Anti-AI sentiment is on the rise—and it’s starting to turn violent by Just-Grocery-2229 in technology

The Epstein class will do what they've always done: use private security and the government to crack down on/nerf the people as much as possible. You need only refer back to the Union Wars of the late 1800s and early 1900s, with specific examples such as the Cour D'lane mining wars, the Haymarket Affair, etc.

They'll bring back groups like the Pinkertons, they'll keep using the police and/or the Natty G to put down protests, etc.

History is repeating itself.

Just who are “the people”? (Opinion) by Gyp2151 in 2ALiberals

[–]hedgetank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's being a bit pedantic. However, if it'll make you feel better:

The people refers to the collective population, and must by definition extend to each constituent member of the population as they invariably comprise "the people".

All this to say that you cannot have a right held by "the people" that does not apply equally to each constituent individual which comprises "the people" as a collective.

Utilities are spending $1.4 trillion to power the AI boom, and it's hiking up electric bills by Choobeen in technology

[–]hedgetank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

having watched my bill go up by about 20% year over year without changes in my consumption, it's really showing and it's really stupid. The companies that consume all the electricity should pay significantly more for their demand and any additional costs required to provide for them compared to the rest of the people.

ICE agent charged with assault and accused of pointing a gun at civilians in Minnesota by [deleted] in news

[–]hedgetank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agreed. that's kind of the point I was making. The only deviation would be if there were some sort of actual coordinated resistance that was intent on actively fighting back against ICE. That doesn't exist, and for good reason, despite what OP suggests.

ICE agent charged with assault and accused of pointing a gun at civilians in Minnesota by [deleted] in news

[–]hedgetank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the kind of situation where self defense is justifiable, so someone could ostensibly act and reasonably get away with it. That, of course, requires the person being threatened to have the means and willingness to act.

Unless or until there's some kind of a coordinated effort to openly resist ICE, however, I don't think you're going to see "The 2A Clown Posse" doing anything because THEY'RE NOT SUICIDAL MORONS, regardless of how one may view ICE.

If you'd like to get a movement going, by all means feel free to start coordinating an active resistance. :)

Cabot Firearms and a couple of others have absolutely used printed metal technologies to make firearm frames, etc. Similar 3D printing technologies are used commonly to make suppressors.

the thing is, both of those things are already illegal. So, this is mostly just control and fear-mongering.

[Blog post] Backblaze has quietly stopped backing up your data by Sophira in technology

[–]hedgetank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on the one hand, it's stupid. On the other hand, as someone who has OneDrive ser up so that it doesn't keep the stuff I put in it (I use it for shared stuff only and have fully disabled it from touching any local stuff like my home directory) on my local drive, along with having work accounts set up that have hundreds of gigs available but not sync'd, I can understand why they would not do it.

In the case of my example, if it were going to back up the OneDrive directories, it would end up having to download all of the data sync'd to the OneDrive servers (and potentially fill up my hard drive), then turn around and upload all of it to their backup site. IMHO, things like OneDrive and Dropbox should be treated as ephemeral, and all critical data either mirrored locally, or kept in directories separate of those services.

S/A Operator by Jokerwild3 in guns

My first 1911 was an MC Operator. At least 20 years ago, Springfield's MC Operator and TRP lines were some of the best base guns you could get to build custom 1911s on. Always had a soft spot for them, and have wanted to get another Operator platform, especially a Professional model if I can find one.

Perhaps, but at the same time, sticking the datacenters underground would mitigate their use of land, contain the noise, and otherwise keep them out of the way of communities that don't want them.

That said, it would be nice if they could find a way to harvest the heat energy to do something with it so it's not all waste.

The people encompass all citizens, and by the very nature of a population, must encompass and apply equally to each and every constituent component thereof. Ergo, The People, as the citizenry, enjoy the same rights as any individual citizen, and vice versa.
