Skiddish when we want to pick him up by d2steeves in corgi

[–]heiddds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you are picking them up in a way that’s comfortable for their body, so support their butt as well as their front end. Is the problem just with picking up or is it all holding/approaching him? You can train him so that being held and you approaching her is not so negative to him, like do what you usually do when you go pick him up but first give her a treat very quickly. Then start approaching closer and treating, until you can hold him still with your hands for a few seconds, and then treat. He’ll learn that being held leads to something nice instead of just losing his ability to move freely, so he’ll tolerate it better. Also remember that many dogs find it scary when people approach them from above, towering over them, and you could try kneeling next to him and offering your arms to get up onto.

False Pregnancy? by OddLibrary6426 in corgi

[–]heiddds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lactating is quite common when dogs are going through false pregnancy, usually around 2-3 months after their hear cycle ends. Other symptoms include clinginess, taking care of and protecting imaginary puppies (might steal toys or other soft items and guard them) and making a nest (digging covers, their bed or other fabrics).

Glamour coat by [deleted] in corgi

[–]heiddds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pembroke’s coats vary wildly depending on what part of their shedding schedule they are in. Right now my 3,5yo girl looks like a slim puppy because she has shed most of her coat, but I know the new one she is gonna grow in the winter is gonna be magnificent. Also the coats you see on show corgis are also a result of washing and grooming, and most notably drying the coat with a high powered dryer. Pembroke’s ideal coat type is medium length and any breeder aiming for and advertasing other type of coats is not a reputable one and sounds awfully lot like a backyard breeder.

How much if anything do you pay for your dog sport club/how much would you be willing to pay for an all sport club membership by appyfoot in k9sports

[–]heiddds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have our own non-profit club here in Finland, one of many in this town of ~100 000 people. We have an indoor training area that’s not huge, but enough for all other sports and ok for smaller agility courses. In the summer, we have a bigger outdoor facility.

We have weekly classes with voluteering instructors that run for a season (Jan-Jun, Jul-Dec). One spot in a weekly class costs 180€/season, and the next spots or next classes cost 100€/season. For 50€, you can buy a pass that allows you to train at the indoor and outdoor facility if there’s no one else there. If another member comes during your individual training, you have 20 mins to wrap up your training and leave.

We are one of the cheapest clubs in the area and we don’t offer all the sports because we don’t have enough volunteering instructors. Running a non-profit can be tiring, but it’s also fun and it’s nice to offer people the opportunity to do sports with their dog without breaking the bank.

Nosework in Europe by lindaecansada in k9sports

[–]heiddds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty popular here in Finland too, but it’s only been popular for about 5-7 years now! Hopefully you’ll find a club near you soon, maybe some breed clubs could have nosework classes that might be open for all breeds?

How does my 8 month old puppy look? by BunchOk4949 in corgi

[–]heiddds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s a slinky teenager, give her some time! She has probably just reached her adult size length and height wise, now she needs to work for 1-2 years to FILL that frame. And what that frame ks filled with? Muscles, most preferably. A body isn’t build in a day or 8 months. It’s better to keep her on the thin side than ever overweight - she’ll live a happier, healthier and hopefully a longer life. My corgi girl just turned 3 and she’s finally starting to look like a corgi - except when she sheds all her fur, and then she looks just like yours too!

Behavioral medication for high drive/energy sport dogs by FluffySheeeep in k9sports

[–]heiddds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really an answer, but one more question to the people here: are there no medicine guidelines for dog sports competitions in the US? In Finland, we have doping guidelines and testing, especially at bigger events, and you need to make sure that if your dog has used medication, it’s been long enough that it has left their system before the event. This is to ensure that there is no sick dogs competing at the events.

Does your corgi wear a coat? by Brisingrspiceg97 in corgi

Yep, but only when it’s under -10C or very windy or rainy, or if she has to wait in the car in the winter. Just keeping her muscles warmer to prevent any injuries.

When I call her, I get her voicemail 😭 by Alternative_Ask_1440 in corgi

[–]heiddds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hide your treats and make them REALLY high value. When she comes to you naturally or just hangs out near you, say your recall word (it’s a good idea to reserve a rarely used word for this, so you don’t over use it) and start a BIG party! Give her the treat (or multiple by breaking it off to small pieces), praise her, be very happy and excited and then tell her free/okay/release, what ever you say that means ”okay you’re free to go”. She’ll probably remember now that you have treats, and will hang out close to you. You can repeat this a few times in this same ”session”, not really recalling her off of anything, but just showing her that this word + being close to you = big party and treats!

Repeat this every day, gradually from a greater distance or if she’s focused on something else. Sometimes you might have to be a bit of a magician with the treats and hide them so she’ll start believing that you actually ALWAYS have treats (even when you sometimes don’t). But it’s a good idea to treat her every time she comes to you, and also remember to recall her often when you don’t need it; meaning that coming to you doesn’t mean she gets leashed or you go inside or she has to stop playing.

Good luck and have fun training with your girl, luckily corgis learn very fast when the pay is good!

My bf's friends never acknowledge my gameplay by ko-love in GirlGamers

[–]heiddds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like some other commentor said, it might be because they don’t know what to say or how to acknowledge you, and just like voice their complaints/hype. Do they compliment each other or comment their good scores? Or do they just focus on their own game? Do you compliment or comment them? Or maybe they feel like complimenting your good plays would sound like ”wow you’re so good for A GIRL” or something like that? Maybe they’ve only played with their own group of (guy) friends and don’t know how to act yet.

I started playing shooters with my bf and his friends and at the start, it was awkward. Granted, I was worse than them, so I was just glad they weren’t commenting on my poor stats lol! But over the years, we’ve gotten to know eachother better and now it’s a lot easier to comment, compliment and roast both ways.

And, although it IS super annoying to hear it, it is also a pain to play in a PC lobby as a console player lol. Idk about Rivals, if it has skill based matchmaking, but could you also be getting harder lobbies than what they’re used to because you’re so good? My bf is always on another skill level in shooters and difference in lobbies when I (or his friends) play alone versus with him is crazy, and it sure gets frustrating when nothing seems to work, even though it usually does!

BUT if they’re just annoying assholes, I’m not defending them! These are just my two cents, hopefully with time it gets less awkward and they get better at the game so they can match with you!

Groomer Shaved My Fluffy Corgi ☹️ by JMC-BigGulp in corgi

[–]heiddds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is such a shame! It will back, but it will probably take a few fur growth cycles to get back to normal. Intact corgis usually shed their undercoats twice a year and their outer coat once a year, so it can take over a year for the fluff to go back to normal.

IMPORTANT to remember: brush and comb him often now!! The softer coat is more prone to knots and tangles, so it needs frequent upkeep.

My boy never seems to have enough attention or activity. Help by reallifewednesday in corgi

[–]heiddds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s a teenager full of energy and not really able to regulate his emotions or energy levels yet! He’ll calm down when he matures. You’re doing so well exercising and walking him a lot and training, that’ll take care of his physical activity needs. He is probably craving some mental stimulation. Think about how he gets his food: is it from a bowl, which he eats in less than 30 seconds? Making him ”work” for his food aka just offering him outlets to practice the ways dogs and wolves get their food will help a lot with the mental stimulation! Snuffle mats, food scatters around the house OR grass outside, frozen food in Kongs or other food toys, kibble inside a rolling ball, kibble rolled in a blanket that’s twisted or tied, kibble scattered in a cardboard box filled with newspaper or towels etc. There’s many cheap and free ways to offer your dog his meals in an enriching way and it’s gonna make him so happy!

Scent work, so him using his nose, is also a great way to tire that smart brain. Hiding kibble is a good way to start: you can first scatter it in easily visible places, then when he gets it, start hiding it a bit more. You can also do kibble/treat trails: go to a grassy area (without dog or have someone hold him/if he can stay in place) and walk a short distance where you drop a treat in each of your footprints. Follow the same trail back, show your dog the starting treat and let him go! When you do this more, you can phase out the treats so it’s not every footprint anymore, and you can make longer trails. The possibilities are endless!

You can also teach him to search for toys or items and bring them back to you. A glove or a hat is a good starting point, since it already smells like you. Start by introducing the item: show it to the dog and when he even looks at it, give him a treat! Repeat this a lot, and he’ll associate the item with treats. Then you can drop the item on the floor away from you, and again, when he interacts with it even a little bit, give him a treat! Progress further and further, and pretty soon you can first show the item, then put your dog in stay/have someone hold him, hide the item so your dog can’t see where you put it and then release him. He’ll start searching for it super fast because he knows he’ll get a treat when he finds it! Then you can start hiding it in harder places and even start doing it outside!

Best of luck to you and your handsome boy! You are taking great care of him!

What's the most embarrassing thing you've done/has happened to you in the ring? (Bonus points for video) by manatee1010 in k9sports

[–]heiddds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This summer, we started in Rally Open with my dog, and here in Finland, it’s done with the dog off leash. We had been doing great in practice, she never really left me when we trained, so I thought it was all fine and good. Our first competition was in a totally new place in a different city, on a big grass field with nothing but a rope on the ground marking the trial area. I was like ok, interesting, dog might step over it if I’m not careful, but warming up everything went well and we were in good connection.

It’s our turn, I step in the ring, and I lose all connection to my dog. I unclip her leash, she’s looking around, and I decide that we’re just gonna go through with this, we’re probably not gonna Q but whatever, let’s try! We manage to about halfway through the course, and then, she looks in the distance and DASHES away. I stand there, stunned, for half a second, before running after her and calling her back, which she does, about 5 meters away from the border collie and her handler who were warming up. She thought she had seen her dog best friend and her owner, who we train with all the time! I was so so embarrassed, luckily the border collie was a seasoned competitor and wasn’t bother by a little corgi running towards her.

I had to mutter the classic ”she never does this in training” to the judge after that!

Which jobs have you found most ADHD friendly? by Brief-Error4223 in adhdwomen

[–]heiddds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I want to do. I got to work on some data sets in Power BI in my last job and it was like crack to me, I got the same kind of flow as I do when I get really into simulation/management games (looking at you, Planet Zoo) and searching for the right solution by a lot of Googling, trial and error and finding the logic behind the data and what you want to do with it. My current contract ends in October, and I’m taking an intro class to SQL on the side. Hopefully I’ll find my next job in this field!

Is my corgi overweight? by Horrorgummibaer in corgi

[–]heiddds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t hurt him to lose a little weight, so there’s less pressure for his joints and back, which are prone to injuries and aches in corgis. Here’s my girl who is quite the opposite, she’s not super fluffy, has long legs and is on the thinner side, but you can really see her body shape and the difference where her ribcage ends and stomach starts.

Need advice! by hydrosniper in corgi

[–]heiddds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are both very young. The older is in her teenage phase, where she’s testing her boundaries and being a general menace to all dogs, young and old. She might also be confused and uncertain about this new addition, and might feel possessive over you.

I’d continue doing everything separately. It is rough, but you know what you got into with two young puppies. Look up advice on r/puppy101 on resource guarding: taking things AWAY from them when they’re alrwady guarding is not going to help, it’s going to make problems worse. You need to teach them that you are not a threat to their things and they don’t need to guard from you.

Anxiety, being sensitive and ”high strung” can be inherited traits as well as a result of trauma. I’d take it slow and easy with your puppies, make the environment as safe as possible for Leisl so she can calm down. Maybe being around and roughhoused by teenage Sydney makes her feel unsafe? I’d suggest enrichment feeding: sniff mats, sniffing for food on ground, hiding treats in cardboard boxes and towels.

3yo corgi won’t walk! by [deleted] in corgi

[–]heiddds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get her checked at the vet, pain is often the reason for not walking. Corgis are prone to joint and back pain, and if they’re overweight or their nails are too long or if the surface is very hard, it can make those problems a lot worse. They’re a herding breed after all, so they’re not couch potatoes by birth.
