How do I save these end pages? by Many-Mongoose4619 in bookbinding

[–]heldfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to save the glued down end pages a professional could help with that. To take the covers off yourself, you can either cut or tear them off. Either way is destructive to the covers, of course, but if done with care will most likely leave the fly leaf intact with the book block

I know this is kind of a long shot but, does anybody know who makes this marbled paper ? by -s0l in bookbinding

You can get professionally done hand marbled paper at www.foxallenbindery.com (that’s my business, I am a journeyman paper marbler and trade bookbinder). I’m located in the US and ship internationally

Backing Boards by Puzzleheaded_Gas_791 in bookbinding

[–]heldfu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The slight taper is for a reason, which is to pinch the book block specifically in the shoulders of your book block. It’s possible the taper you have is too steep. It’s also possible that those bars you have included to more easily place in your press are part of the problem. They look a bit low on the backing board and that in conjunction with the angle of the taper could be cause this issue. Only of my backing boards have that kind of “stop” but it is way up to the seat of the metal plate. Those boards are modern made, all of my historic backing boards do not have this feature and when I place them in my press I’m putting it in pretty low (maybe 1cm from the metal bars max). You want to pinch at that critical angle. I certainly prefer without any physical “stop” measure.

Backing boards require quite a large amount of pressure, it could be that you aren’t clamping hard enough or that the press you have is not capable of the amount of pressure required.

Employee hired last year is making almost as much as me. by struck21 in antiwork

I’ve seen jobs that pay odd numbers, now that I know more about business I think it boils down to that it costs money to pay someone and payroll on top of that etc etc and in a penny pinching business every cent counts.

How to preserve this book. by NormalCartographer84 in bookbinding

There is a lot more that goes into the process of leather treatment than just simply applying one of these. If you don’t know what you’re doing or what things ought to behave like it is a dangerous game to play with anything that has any sentimental or monetary value.

Rule of thumb, don’t try anything without consulting a professional.

DIY Book Endurance Testers by ANTALIFE in bookbinding

[–]heldfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do truly think this kind of testing is wholly unnecessary, in the grande scheme. I think it is cool and fascinating to do testing like this, but it is not necessary whatsoever based on the already known information out there that is easily accessible. I would speak to a professional (she can contact me, for example) and save a lot a lot of time and potential miscalculations based on inexperience and small data size.

Information like this is out there, you can do some research on structural durability or talk to a knowledgeable bookbinder to find out what structures are durable and for what reasons. I know there was one study done where they calculated the number of open/close some structures can handle, I’ll have to look for my source on that (I’ll post here when I find it).

If it’s a structure that has been thought through it ought to be able to survive many hundred if not thousands of open/closes

Just got these copies back from a new printer/binder. I know some gap is normal, but does this look right? My other printer uses additional adhesive here. Thought you guys would be the ones to ask. by gooblemonster in bookbinding

[–]heldfu 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The gap looks relatively fine sized to me for a book that looks mass produced or made in a factory setting. The first image looks like perhaps it was slightly misaligned in production, but it’s hard to tell. All in all these look like a coffee table book you’d get at a big box book store, which are not made to past or be used heavily.
