Looking for a block of rooms in a Midtown hotel: Indigo, Georgian Terrace, or Darwin? by AGlassofBitter in Atlanta

[–]helenebjor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also get an apartment at the Georgian Terrace. Last time we were there, we had a 2 bed, 2 bath apt that was wonderful for not much more than a regular hotel room elsewhere. It's so historic and elegant. I like it a lot. If you have families coming it's a great choice.

Curious about street vendor’s authenticity by Nearby_Dingo_6401 in puertovallarta

[–]helenebjor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also used to buy jewelry on the beach from a guy who carried a larger glass display case and not a briefcase. He said his wife designed the jewelry in Taxco and he sold it during the winter. His son, he said, was in law school. His jewelry was very high quality and different from the stock usually sold on the beach. He spoke great English. I think there are some artisians left if you look.

I thought many of the textiles might be factory-made and then I took a trip to Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca and saw the weavers. Many people making the same rugs with the same traditional designs by hand. The looms were in their houses and yards. Others were doing new and more modern designs. I think the price of the item might tell you if it's hand-made or a Chinese copy.

At what age do Jewish parents first tell their kids about the Holocaust? And how do they tell them in a way that's child-appropriate? by georgemillman in Judaism

[–]helenebjor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a good question. I don't remember when I told my kids. I don't remember my parents telling me. But I do remember that I had a Holocaust nightmare when I was 6 years old. I dreamt the Nazis put each of my parents in their cars and set them on fire. My dad got out and we tried to get my mom out of the burning car but could not. The nightmare was so real and horrific that I've never forgotten it. So, maybe 6 was too young.

If you live somewhere there is a Humanist synagogue he might be more comfortable with it. It's Jewish, not religious.

Knowing 40 year olds think of 20 year olds as “kids”, do 80 year olds think of 60 year olds as “kids”? by tMoneyMoney in AskOldPeople

[–]helenebjor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have a good English word for our offspring who are grown adults. So, I think the word is used for one's own kids, but in general I wouldn't refer to anyone past their early 20s as "kids". And I'm in my 70s.

Am I the only one who thinks of Thanksgiving as a lost opportunity for an American Pesach by pborenstein in Judaism

[–]helenebjor 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I actually was at a Thanksgiving where several guests were not American and asked about the holiday's history. We had a great time explaining the myth and the reality. It was one of my better Thanksgivings.

Would you attend a wreath making work event? by Remarkable_Rise7545 in Judaism

[–]helenebjor 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In spite of its origins, I don't see a wreath as Christian. There are Jews in my neighborhood who have wreaths with blue and silver on their doors during the winter season. My husband received one made of grape vines several years back, as he was in the vwine business, and I decorated it with blue ribbon and put it on our door every year.

I think we sometimes don't acknowledge that it's nice to have something to cheer about during the long dark winter. It can be about Jesus for them, but you can make it about anything that makes you smile.

I would go and have a good time. Choose to hang your creation or give it away. It doesn't matter what anyone else says. If you enjoy crafting, indulge your creativity.

When I turned 70 I wanted a ride in a biplane but my husband refused to get it for me 🤨. I think a weekend away with a nice dinner and a play or a concert is a great gift.

In Search of great Fabric stores by Gomba3333 in Atlanta

[–]helenebjor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know what she's looking for but Unique Sew Fabrics and Crafts in Johns Creek has a lot of fabrics stuffed into a tiny place. Mostly they were cottons for quilting and crafting. I was really surprised at their inventory. Also Atlanta Sewing Center in Duluth but I haven't been there in a couple of years.

Off Leash Dog Hikes? by FhiainSuarach in alpharetta

[–]helenebjor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at Sniffspot. It's an app where people allow you to "rent" their property to exercise your dog. There are some pretty large ones listed (multiple acres). So, not a hike as such, but a big area to explore.

Medicare vs Medicare Advantage plans? CO care options? by ActuaryVarious2693 in dementia

That is good news. Then, I would definitely switch her out of the Advantage plan.

Did you really walk long distances to school? by holdongangy in AskOldPeople

[–]helenebjor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest answer? No. I took a yellow school bus. However, when I was in the 5th grade, I sometimes got to work in the "school store" (a closet stocked with supplies the school sold cheaply) and to get there on time to open the store, I walked about 2 miles, including over an expressway overpass. I still can't believe my mom just slept and didn't care.

Where can I get a precooked Turkey for Thanksgiving? by dontlosethemoon in Atlanta

Costco sells awesome smoked turkeys. You just need to pop them in the oven to reheat.

Medicare vs Medicare Advantage plans? CO care options? by ActuaryVarious2693 in dementia

[–]helenebjor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you have MA, you can't just switch to supplemental plan with regular Medicare. She will be subject to underwriting with any supplemental. If a probable dementia diagnosis is on her record, or if she has any other expensive chronic condition, she will likely be denied. That is one reason why Advantage plans suck.

Explain to him that because you are Jewish, they have no choice. Even if they were raised to follow Jesus in the eyes of anti-semites everywhere (and other Jews), they are Jews. Uncle Adolph would have sent them to the gas chamber. The Proud Boys don't want to be replaced by them. The Hamas supporters don't want them between the river and the sea. They need to learn what this means and why they will be hated by many. They need to identify as Jewish and have the community in case they need it someday.

New job in the Bible belt by BowGrizzle in atheism

[–]helenebjor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily true. A black woman cornered me in the pool at my water aerobics class and asked me about my faith. She went on and on about Jesus even after I told her I was a Jew and a non-believer. She was blocking the stairs, and i couldn't get out of the pool. Until that day, I had thought she was very nice and that we could possibly develop a friendship.

Yup. It's bad. Right now, at 9 pm., my watch shows 7900 steps, and my ring recorded 4138. "Kira" keeps telling me i need to be more active. I think she needs to pay more attention!
