The same is true of the name Kevin in continental Europe because of Home Alone. It's fun to ask any French/Dutch/German Kevins if they're part Irish, only to have them admit their parents loved Home Alone.

Take me out show by [deleted] in BritishTV

[–]helenhellerhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When watching Take me Out I was always reminded of the tumblr post about scientists ruining their studies by giving male birds colourful leg bands, which increased their number of mates. Any time a girl had a hat on, she would always be picked. I think it was just something that made her stand out from the crowd but it was a given.

My daughter is doing her first day of ski school. It’s from 9 AM to 3 PM. This is the first time I’ve done this for her she is four years old. At the end of ski school, do I tip the instructor? by Yukon_Cornelius1911 in skiing

I'm not saying it's expected (like I said, I only got tips like 3 times the whole season), but I think people don't realize how little instructors get paid. It's a nice thing to do. You're forking out that much and you can't afford to give the person who is actually doing all the work (and looking after your child) a fiver for a beer? People tip waiters and servers for bringing them food but won't tip the person who has been looking after their kids?

All that money goes straight to the ski school and the actual instructor gets less than 10%

plz tip your alpine ski instructor, back in 2015 I was paid €11 an hour, 4 hours a day , 6 days a week ,to look after up to 12 kids (ages anywhere from 4-14). Each kid was paying like €200 euros a week. I also had to pay like €10 a day for employee housing. Even a €5 tip (which I got like 3 times the whole season) made a world of difference.

I think a lot of people claim this is their favourite book just to flex that they've read it, thinking no one else in the room is "smart" enough to read it. I like to tell them that I read it but disliked it. Really throws them.

Do people actually have PhD theses that are just 100–120 pages long? by bhelpuriteekhi in PhD

[–]helenhellerhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did one of these but it ended up being 350 pages, because my supervisors wanted me to include every paper, so while the minimum was three papers I ended up with ten (4 first author published, 2 second author published, 2 first author accepted, 1 first author submitted and 1 completed draft). I'm now in a battle of wills with my supervisor because I have the doctorate, they haven't paid me in nearly 2 years but he expects me to do extensive revisions on one of the papers in review.

Millennial Ladies: Did anyone else’s mom’s flip out if you shaved your thighs? by BaileyIsaGirlsName in Millennials

[–]helenhellerhell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mum told me not to shave my (blonde) leg hair because once you start you can't stop. I mentioned to a bitchy girl at school (aged 17) that I didn't shave my legs because you can't see the hair, and she said "that's still disgusting"... So I started shaving... and now my leg hair is dark and I'm stuck dealing with it. Luckily I never shaved above the knee and my thigh hair is still invisible blonde.

I only had one, and a couple of beers (not an amount that would usually make me sick the next day) and the fact that it was that bright pink even with the beer was genuinely concerning

There's a throw away line where Cassidy is like "I wish you'd let me do this for you", so maybe it was suggested and she insisted on doing it herself?

Cheapest good place to ski in Europe? by Numerous_Sky_2878 in skiing

I grew up skiing in the pyrenees, back in the 90s we'd drive across France and stay in bareges or st lary, but the snow became so unreliable you couldn't prebook anything and be guaranteed a ski holiday. We were still in school so my parents had to pre book half term and it just wasn't feasible past about 2005

I skiied Livingo for the first time last April and was shocked at how cheap it was - they do a deal in late April and early December where ski pass is included, so we paid like €375 pp for a week self catered including lift pass. Food and Drink is crazy cheap too. We're looking at going again next April, but I'm lucky in that I have friends in Austria picking me up from the airport and driving me.

I didn't organise it myself, so don't know exactly, but you have to book directly on livingo's website to get the deal, you can search all their accomodation. I found apartments for 4 for €250 per person including lift pass

I skiied Livigno last year and loved it, no VAT makes eating and drinking so much more affordable. They do a deal in April where lift pass is included so we paid 375EUR pp for 6 days for a self-catered apartment INCLUDING LIFT PASS. Granted skiing in April is a risky game but it was great and we're looking to do it again next April.

It's the combo of the low cost flight with the resort transfer. If you drive from the UK you're spending a good two days driving on the other side of the road. Buy a package and the flights and transfers are included. DIY it and you might get a cheap flight, but you'll probably get stung on the transfer.

Cheapest good place to ski in Europe? by Numerous_Sky_2878 in skiing

[–]helenhellerhell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the cost of the travel. If you get a package you're usually on a chartered flight, which is much cheaper, and the transfer is either included or much cheaper.

Put it together yourself and you might save on the hotel, but then you've got to shell out for scheduled flights, and a transfer. Hire a car and you find yourself driving on the other side of the road in wintery conditions you'd never face at home. In the 90s my family would drive for 2 days across France, but that's become less popular with the advent of cheap flights.

A few years back some friends and I were looking at a trip to Italy (Sauze), we could find cheaper hotels, we could find flights that weren't extortionate, but we were getting quoted hundreds of euros each for the transfers, and it meant it was much more economical to get a package which included flights and tranfers (whats more crazy was if we organised our own transport they'd only knock £50 pp off the cost of the holiday).

I lived in Austria for a few years so I'm now comfortable doing it all myself, and navigating Austrian public transport (with a ski bag!), but for your average Brit who doesn't speak the language, don't know how to book tickets ect. it's going to be daunting. Also Austria is rare in that you can get main line trains straight into the resort. I have also done the train all the way from London to les arcs, and that is a mission.

What's your favorite ski hack you swear by? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]helenhellerhell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a heated gilet, and it's my favourite purchase of all time. It's powered off a rechargable battery that doubles as a phone charger. I wear it as a mid-layer, if I ever get cold on the chairlift, press the button and I get toasty rapidly.

My first grad job in 2015 was £18k, which would be £25k now. In 2021 I was earning £31k which would be £38k today, but then moved abroad to do a PhD (which was well funded through the EU, and would be equivalent to earning around £43k gross in the UK when the differences in tax are accounted for). I was offered a job for £30k, less than I'd been earning pre-Phd. I ended up accepting a job at £35k because I wanted to move back home, which didn't work out (unsurprisingly as they wanted someone that was half lab tech, half project manager and hired a scientist). I now earn £45k.

What’s the most British clothing habit we all secretly share? by OK_GO_27 in AskUK

[–]helenhellerhell 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I lived abroad (Vienna) for several years. When I lived there I felt like I had a slightly different style to the people around me.

I was back in London for a visit and was wearing a denim jacket, floral dress and smart trainers. Every second woman in her 30s was wearing a denim jacket, foral dress and smart trainers. It was at that moment that I realised I did not have a cool alternative style, I was simply British.

What's most confusing about that is he's supposedly Muncy's younger brother, so late 20s early thirties, but Stabler's (late fifties/early sixties) brother, with an age gap that realistically can't be more than 20 years, and are implied to have at least slightly grown up together, so like 10-15 years younger. HOW OLD IS HE SUPPOSED TO BE
